Surprised JPL didn't reach out to @CuriousMarc and his team (Mike, Master Ken, et al.) to build a voyager simulation. Mike did build a hardware-level FPGA of both the AGC and the AGC test system. Mike needed the test frame to test that his AGC simulation worked the same as a real AGC.

If Starship becomes operational and has sufficient cost reductions, it may be possible to return some part(s) of ISS to Earth to study and/or refurbish. The two SpaceLab modules that NASA used on SpaceShuttle missions (anchored in payload bay) have be sold to private enterprises to be upgraded to become modules of commercial space stations. Axiom Space is one of these commercial space station project. The other possibility is some of ISS modules could be reconfigured, or moved to another space station if a space tub was available. They have value for commercial space activities. Not to mention ESA and Japan both have their own modules.

Thank you very much. Great as always! By the way: these days I've been amazed at the tethered satellites and what can be done with them. Among other things, energy production is a very interesting topic, as is using it as a skyhook (only knew this as a way for spies to escape with planes, but now saw that it also exists in space travel, as a method to speed up vehicles or satellites. Look also space tether: I was wondering if the space tether simply got stuck on the Agena Target Docking Vehicle in 1966? Wouldn't that be particularly dangerous in terms of collisions due to its size? Well, there was probably more space up there back then...). On this occasion, thank you very much for all the great videos about satellites. Of course and really really like it!

@@scottmanley Oh sure, Marroco. Misunderstood you there... Would love to see a launch pad here in Portugal. Unfortunately there are tons of burocracy and laws that make it unlikely. Fingers crossed

"12 to 16 months" in spaceflight terms probably means somewhere closer to 32 months* *unless it's SpaceX, then it probably means 26 months and lots of explosions

Scott: I've been looking for a particular USB cable in the pile of technological mess on my desk for weeks. It must have disappeared into the black hole just below it. I see it's on your desk (I recognize it because it has a dent on the connector): can you send it back to me before it disappears into the corresponding black hole of your desk?...... or maybe it comes back on its own.

Someone please explain how fuel is pumped in space? The fuel is just floating in the tank, right? Edit: (Header tank transfer or ship to ship) How is the fuel able to be picked-up by a pump if it's floating?
@kaboom4679
@kaboom4679 2 місяці тому
Pressurized bladder , rotational inertia pushing the fuel against the tank wall where the inlets are , little pixies with buckets , all good .
@Tuxfanturnip
@Tuxfanturnip 2 місяці тому
the header tank is kept full until it's needed so there's no empty space for the liquid to slosh into
@tangydiesel1886
@tangydiesel1886 2 місяці тому
There's a few ways. Small tanks can use a bladder or piston to keep liquid fuel at the outlet. Large tanks may need thrusters to push the rocket ahead so the liquid goes to the outlet pipe, then it can light the engine, which the continual thrust will keep liquid where it need to be. And like you said, a header tank to get things started, then acceleration takes care of the rest.

Only experimental spacecraft have ever done this so we don't really know. NASA's proposals use capillary action, SpaceX has proposed spinning up the two spacecraft to produce artificial gravity. We flew one mission in 2011 on STS Atlantis from what I can tell that tested various methods. Given the small quantity ~1 liter, it was probably pressure-fed. The scale of the spacecraft involved is important, more fuel means it takes much longer to flow across capillaries/more mass of capillaries need to be included, if you spin up big spacecraft you need to reinforce them to handle the spinning mass/waste fuel on spin/down and manage vibrations, pressure-fed systems add substantial complexity (an additional fuel tank/type) and waste mass on the filler gas. Methane/H2/O2 are all cryogenic, which makes things harder than say, hydrazine or ethanol (the fuel NASA tested with).
