Anytime you see a fully grown predator, you should be in awe, cuz what it takes to get there is immense. A very low percentage make it to adulthood. Also, the lions propensity for growth is impressive. That little thing will grow up to hunt 1500lb buffalo. Animals are incredible because no matter what they are dealing with, they continue to push on, unrelenting.

It is absolutely breathe taking to listen to the narrator, his descriptive words paints the picture just like an artists does while painting . .

I can remember always watching nat geo and every min asking my grandad what kind of animal is that and he told “boy if u just listen they’ll tell what kind of animal it is just listen”. I love animal documentaries especially lions.

To answer the two most common questions. The small lion cubs killed by their own pride: Juvenile lions are playful, clumsy and apparently don't know their own strength. They played a little too ruff with the tiny cubs and killed them by accident. This is one of the reasons lion mothers keep their cubs hidden until atleast 9 weeks when they are atleast big enough to keep up and withstand some rough play from their bigger siblings and cousins. Often the lion mother would try to find a secure den that is far enough from her boisterous pride but not too far as to cross over into another pride's territory. In this film, Matsumi chose a den too close to her pride and her older offspring got hold of the cubs and killed them by accident. I wondered why she did not intervene more, but we can not always understand the mind of an animal and why they do things, or in this case, didn't do. The pride male killing his son: First of all, that juvenile male lion was indeed the biological son of the pride male, Sekekama. If he was not, he would even have been in the pride because male lions never tolerate the presence of cubs that are not their own. Secondly, that juvenile male was killed because he was disobedient and insubordinate, and moving in on the lioness (his mother, yes these animals sometimes cross that line) it was a direct challenge to the king. Now we know for a fact that sometimes these films are dramatized, so the cub may or may not have died from the attack in reality but they made it that way to captivate the audience, because in reality pride males may take a swipe at naughty cubs but not actually kill them outright. But for this film, Sekekama killed his son for his disobedience. I hope this clears it all up.

I feel so bad for those cubs.. but, it's not like I can do anything! That's just life, and the queen tried so hard to protect the two new ones. I admire her determination.

I watch all lion documentaries but this one is brutal!! Usually the male cubs are banished around 2 to keep them from inbreeding. But when your own pride kills their cubs, this pride is wicked.

The way the father killed his child and the way the older siblings killed the babies was soul crushing

My heart broke for the mother lion whose 2 newborn cubs were killed by their own sub adult siblings. 😢 This is why lionesses hide their cubs until at least they are 3 months old. They can’t join the pride until they are strong enough to stand the rough playing and walking they do regularly.

I’m a wild animal fanatic but I watch Savage Kingdom specifically to hear the voice of this narrator. He’s just so awesomely distinctive.

i always thought lions went and gave birth in a secluded area. i didn’t realize the pride would seek the mother out- or maybe it was by whim they ran into one another. so sad for those babies. i get if they were killed by other animals or a different pride but it’s unfortunate it had to be the doing of her own older sons/ nephews.

What a great documentary. I love The Queen, broke my heart to see her pride kill her 2 cubs though! I will say though that the depiction of hyenas is not totally accurate. They are incredible hunters and ALL Predators scavenge, steal and kill from one another...ALL PREDATORS. Survival is an amazing concept and we if would apply such logic in our own lives we wouldn't get so freaking offended when someone gives us a dirty look, lol.
