I really enjoy your videos. I learn more real-world sailing techniques from you than all other story-telling live-aboard cruisers channels. Thank you for all of the sail-trimming, navigation tips, where you are, where you are headed (and why) as well as how to avoid fishing nets, how to deal with a crappy Main Sheet system, etc. etc. etc.

Man I loved that boat! And it’s like the perfect size between having a really big yacht that needs a crew but small enough that you can run it without a crew. And I’ve seen other boats like this but this is the first one I’ve seen with a jacuzzi!!

Hope to meet you one day Igor. As a fellow sailor your “say it like it is” comments about the boats you are working on are real. It is very hard to find these production boats that fit every persons cruising needs. The small one percent comments you make about the ergonomics of each vessel are so important. The sailing abilities of each vessel even more so. I seriously hope these companies should listen to what you say. Unless you spend a couple of thousand miles on a boat you will never know. If I was you I’d send these companies a broad list of your findings and experiences. And charge them for that. As a 12 year mono hull live aboard and a Building Designer / Architect I see so many small improvements that would make these vessels so much better. As you do out there on the water. Look forward to buying you a beer one day. Keep up the good work mate. Cheers.

Regarding downwind: If I were sailing across an ocean, I’d make the crossing by any means that did not unnecessarily stress the boat. As for the mast taking the energy from astern, that’s what a backstay is for, and I’d want to have the right kind of rigging with that in mind before setting out.

Hi again. A tip on potentially a really good 2 piece reachable oversuit for Sailing. Golf Bad Weather Clothing . I bought a Golf Oversuit to try when Motorbike Touring, a d it's the best oversuit I've ever had, and good to in excess of 150 mph on a Motorbike. Cheap off Ebay too. The Most breathable soft fabric I've ever had, which occasionally was a bit of a disadvantage, as the evaporative cooling off the outer Surface was so efficient, my legs would start freezing. In extreme heat, it was superb over a Joe 90 Armoured Mesh 2 piece suit, plus could pour water over it to get extra evaporative cooling. Cabela's American Hunting clothing, is excellent value for extreme cold gear, if you can stand the vivid Hunting Orange Colour - good for safety though. Big mistake I made with it, was adding the warmest jacket over the Salopette leggings, which even in extreme Cold, turned out to be a far toonwarm combination (I think it was good enough for Alaska level extreme cold temperatures). Comfy enough to sit out in the aft Cockpit of a monohull though, with the Jacket Zips Undone enough to get some cooling air circulation. Great base layer thermals as well though. Wirthnlooking at alternatives to dreadfully overpriced Sailing Clothing. At maybe 10 to 20 percent of the price for superior options. Skiing Clothing seems to be just as afflicted with the Chronic overpricing virus, but good deals can be found during the Summer. 👍 Bob.

Hi Igor, I asked the expert at the Lagoon Factory exactly this question (during my factory visit in March), about sailing without the Main up. He said, we like the main up so that it steadies the whole of the mast. It stops it 'whipping' half way up. The main sail adds a uniform load to the mast. I always imagine being caught in a real gale and want to sail with just a heavily furled Jib that I can furl completely if necessary without having to turn into the wind and waves.. If lagoon have their way, i would indeed have to turn my Cat into wind, in big seas in order to drop the main. Not great if it really is that bad.
@IgorStropnik
@IgorStropnik 2 роки тому
They should design the rigging for us who are using it. They should listen to us more…
@IgorStropnik
@IgorStropnik 2 роки тому
@Ray Hendricks Lagoon has to explain how to sail downwind across the ocean. If you have main up it is usually banging to much. So you can only use front sails.

I made it from Portimao to Sardinia in February single handed with a Nautitech 46 open model 2018 and found the arrangement of the saloon better. Instead of the kitchen is dog berth the table is at the navigation place, the kitchen is at the table and the plotter over the freezer. So if you lay on the dog berth you have the screen in view. Rest is similar.

I skippered a nautitech 46 open from la Rochelle alway up to panama then passing the locks of panama and up to Vancouver. The problems I had where the axles of the ruders where wobbling because the puty around the bearings was still flexible (not enough harder in the epoxy mix). Then we also had problems with the reef lines...they where shaving coming out of the beam by the gooseneck. And the waterpump from the engine was allready broke when we arrived in Lanzarote.(factory issue).

People prefer an island berth with walking space on both sides, not squared off at the foot as you mention. This aids in making the bed day after day, something you may not do on your boat. Great cat and a great report. Regarding the rail and opening of main sail - the rail should not be wider but closer to the mast. Probably 1/3 to 1/2 to the mast. Then you get also the angle required. And possibly a boom vang to pull down the boom.

You should note down Ground speed and speed through water. Then subtract Ground speed and plot a graph. That part that is proportional to your speed is the calibration error. So you can correct your factor by multiplying this to the old factor. Note the factors!!

As for that Triton2 instrument (as well as with other brands), I wonder why they are keeping the display for wind like in the old days with electromechanical arrows like course up always. It would be way more intuitive if the boat contour (which is your reference) is moved with the heading relative to north up so it would be in concurrence with the display on the MFD which is by most sailors set to north up as well.

Bonjour Igor, merci pour cette superbe vidéo vraiment très sympa, le seul bémol, en cours de vidéo le langage français ne fonctionne plus, pour moi qui suis une quiche en anglais 🤪 c'est dommage.

Igor, I hope you see this new comment on this 1 yr old video. I have an idea which I would phrase as a question. Earlier in the video you were talking about how the manufacturer did not like sailing with just the headsail alone. As Catamaran do not have a back stay to support the mast. I was thinking you could use the idea of your advanced jibe preventer, and with sails down, reinforce the boom’s down pressure with two lines, one to each stern corner then take the halyard from the sail and attach to the stern end of the boom. This could create an “advanced backstay” and support the mast from the stern when sailing with just a big headsail. So my question is, what do you think of this idea?
@IgorStropnik
@IgorStropnik 7 місяців тому
Good idea. Halyard might work 🙌👍 Will try it🙏
@davidloewen5528
@davidloewen5528 7 місяців тому
@@IgorStropnik it seems to me the only support on the mast a sail would provide is the down pressure from the halyard and the sail, so it shouldn’t take too much pressure to equalize this. However, I would ensure all lines used are not stretchy, like a halyard line is not stretchy lie docking lines. To make it very stable I would obtain halyard style lines ensure very strong cleating on the end of the boom for attachment. Use the main sheet initially to estimate needed tension, then install the Y lines to the boom. Once the tension is on these non-stretchy lines, release most of the pressure on the main sheet, but keep it quite taut. Then raise your code 0, or spinnaker.

Love your videos, Igor. Question… What brand and max size of catamaran would you recommend to sail singlehanded?
@IgorStropnik
@IgorStropnik 2 роки тому
You can sail singlehanded almost anything but docking in marina from flybridge might be more challenging than sport top.

Awesome video- thanks! 1) What brand and model PFD do you use? It looks comfortable. Do you like it/pros vs cons? 2) Does Lagoon comment on if have main sheet tight does that influence their decision? I thought that with tight mainsheet that functions to a large degree like a rear stay to prevent some forward mast movement. Is that true?

Pdf is Decathlon. They say boom lift is not good as back stay.

WOW, what a long video you done. I certainly learnt a lot from watching your videos. I think the inside helm station would be good for someone who needs back and neck exercise. LOL But seriously, what you suggested was a good idea. Do you own Sandyline or are you a majority shareholder....LOL I certainly hope Nautitech is watching this video and take note. In fact they should get you as a designer for their yachts. Tell them I sent you..LOL

Do you think it would have been better to have a Parasail or a symmetrical spinnaker for the downwind sections as I find going downwind on my helia with a Code 0 and Main Painfull especially if there's a big swell and the main is flopping around? Also a huge thank you for the explanation for a wing on Wing as I have never got that to work and now I realise why, using the main to bounce the wind, Will this work with a Gennaker as it's a slightly bigger sail and comes back further. I also agree on Square top main what a pain they are and avoid them if you can as getting it past lazy Jacks is an art form on its own lol. Those helm positions in Australia would cook you in the Northern latitudes and the lack of visabiliy in marinas would stress the hell out me or did you get used to it?
@IgorStropnik
@IgorStropnik Рік тому
Parasail is amazing, look at my video of Lagoon52 delivery. I put main down many times and just use code O. You can go wing to wing with code 0 and jib very well. Wing with genaker also works.

It seems that the calibration of the spedometer was made bad as the current is widely proportional to the speed. That means, your Speed through Water is indicated higher as it is in reality. So current grows with indicated speed. You have to correct the factor.

Hi Igor, do you use the polars of the boat? Should you maybe downwind not exceed TWA 150 for speed/comfort and the shafing-issue? You would make more miles but probably safe time? I have no experience with cats but I am interested in how you should sail them fast but safe. Of course the downside is more gybes, so maybe not so much comfort :-)

With racing boat it would work. On cruising boat I think shortest way is better.

Igor how do you clean that Sahara sand of the sails ? Also do you ever get pushback from the manufactures about your assessments of their boats.
@IgorStropnik

Never cleaned it…probably just water but looks like that with time and sailing you get rid of it. Nobody contacted me.

If they moved the helm forward 2 feet, and put a bait station type post behind the seat, it would greatly improve safety and the primary complaint I have. No way I’d want to sit there on night watch by self.

The HH 44 does aft helms properly. It's also more social allowing the helm person to be in the cockpit with everyone else.

Sorry, but no. A longer traveller will have some benefits. And the Nauticat is a cruiser, not a racer (I have sailed a few). But it wont change the position or angle of the spreaders. A traveller would (and does) control the 'curl' of the leech (back) of the main. Useful in lighter winds. But not the position of the boom. The sheet does that. So you have no choice but must let out more mainsheet, and accept that the sail will be on the spreader. OKish, unless you have too much roll/yaw, or too little wind (boom will flap a bit). The answer is simple, dont sail deep downwind (best angle/speed for a Cat is broad reach) or use a downwind sail.
