The cost of Insulin in India is $1.50 per day dosage. Yeah that's right. 150 cents. Also there are laws that restrict pharma companies to raise prices of drugs. It is illegal. Also, gov provides free healthcare if you are from backward community, or below poverty line. Plus There is something called as "Medical Tourism" which is quite popular. Visitors from US, UK come to India for high tech medical treatment at 10% of the cost.

I think Medical Tourism could be a very profitable industry in the future. We should probably raise the cost to 25-30% for foreign patients. That way, people won't wonder if the treatments are working. (I mean it. The was a study stating that people reportedly “feel” better after taking more expensive medicines.)
@fmpranav
@fmpranav 5 років тому
Nothing special to brag about.. considering still large number of people still below poverty line and average wages are also low, spending $1.50 per day might not be easy for many. And the direction in which the country is heading, soon India will also have similar model in country milking tax payers and patients. Medical costs are already increasing very fast in country.
@Haru-nee

@@fmpranav Actually, in govt hospitals, people can get medication/treatment at lower prices. There's just a fad among the public to go to expensive AF private hospitals. I love both Hasan and John Oliver, but it's not really that brave. It's not like we don't have legal protections for criticizing bad people and industries. Both him and John Oliver have lawyers that run through the scripts to protect their networks from litigation. John Oliver has been sued multiple times and each time the courts dismissed the cases (which were based on accusations of defamation). They're safe so long as their commentary is either factual or obviously satirical, both of which are protected by the 1st Amendment. What takes guts are the hundreds of people who speak out in countries who don't have protected speech, and whose lives are made a living hell, who are jailed, or who are executed. It's easy to speak out in America when you're backed by a huge network with billions of dollars to pay a legal team or make settlements. It's harder when you're a closet Atheist in a Muslim country criticizing the Quran on social media and being executed at age 19. Or the average 2 to 4 environmental activists (against deforestation) around the world who are assassinated by hitmen on a weekly basis since 2002. Hasan, your confusion is economic, not cultural. FDA won't approve new drug unless it beats current market availability and conditions. Sometimes the market condition is current approved drug is affordable for patients. If you have a new drug in the pipeline that you know to be better for your patients and your business (less legal liability because less complications/actionable adverse effects), then the government leaves you with only one legal option to positively benefit your target population: raise the price. It is illegal for a pharmaceutical company to pull drugs from market without FDA auth. The dude is smug because he knows history will prove he saved lives, not eliminated them. This is all public information Hasan. Try reading a book instead of watching UKposts.

This is crony capitalism verging on socialism.
@lonsdaleitepolitics9597
@lonsdaleitepolitics9597 4 роки тому
So many things wrong with what you're saying... Firstly, patents exist most everywhere, also in areas where these issues with drug pricing don't happen. They're just being misused by the drug corporations here. No, that's anarcho-capitalism, what you're describing. I think your political chart is skewed. Saying the US borders on socialism is deceitful; you are though right that the US is crony capitalist. Capitalism is a broad term. Also, patents are important if you want a free economy. FREE ECONOMIES AREN'T ONES WITHOUT RESTRICTION. A free economy depends on the government to make sure it stays truly free. The same applies to meritocracies. No regulation =/= free economy. If you truly want a free economy, you need some regulation or else it devolves. Antitrust laws break up monopolies, for instance. Monopolies; you know, things that MAKE THE ECONOMY LESS FREE.

Thank you for doing this episode. My daughter is 12 years old and a type one diabetic. She was diagnosed when she was eight and it scares the hell out of me how she is going to afford insulin as a young adult. I know I was not responsible enough to pay for thousands of dollars worth of medication when I was 19 or 20, so I worry about making sure that she gets the medication that she’s going to need to continue to live every day. I have tried to stockpile insulin but because it expires so that’s only going to work for a year or two maybe? She struggles with so much because of her diabetes and I can’t make it easier for her. He’ll, we live in Florida two hours from Disney World, and have never gone because so much money goes into paying for insulin and we just can’t afford to take a vacation to Disney World. That is ridiculous because all four of our kids pay for the fact that insulin companies just want to get richer at the expense of families and diabetics all over the US. Thank you for making this topic a little bit more public. It really is appreciated.

As a diabetic here in the U.S. I was a victim of this. Even through Federal Blue Cross it was $500 per prescription set (i.e. a box of Novolog, a box of Lantus, and needles). I ended up in the hospital with a blood pH of 7.05 (normal range is 7.35-7.45). I've learned a few things since then. One, Novo Nordisk offers a manufacturers coupon for Novolog, making it $25 for a prescription, and two, there is a cheaper alternative to Lantus known as Novolin N, or NPH, that costs $21 per prescription. My cost went from $500 down to about $50 for the same amount of insulin. How did I learn about these things? NPH was prescribed to me by the doctors during my hospital stay, and the manufacturers coupon was from a friend of mine who is a pharmacy tech. Novo Nordisk didn't tell me. None of my endocrenologists had ever told me there were cheaper options. Ask your doctor bout NPH, and google NovoCare discount. I've been in DKA twice in my life, once when I was diagnosed and again when I couldn't afford prescriptions, and I'm fairly certain I shouldn't have walked away from either of them.

you know who had balls......Sri Lankan Pharmacologist Dr.Senaka Bibile, who, among other things, was a big champion of generic medicine. And of course, he died by some "mysterious" cause.

Then there is Barry Sherman, the generous owner of an independent generic drug company who refused to sell to American Pharma companies, found murdered, but the police just brushed their hands and moved on.

Rick Gravestone Portugal’s great move was to decriminalise drugs. The money saved must be going back to the healthcare system where it needs to be.

So glad an episode was done on this topic. As a nurse, I see first hand the consequences of people not being able to afford medications, especially insulin, it’s really horrible and sad!

- the natural molecule insulin is not covered by patent, or patentable. So, everyone can in principle make it and sell it - the millions of diabetic people could create a no profit association that can outsource the production to third party companies at agreed price - the "hard" earned money of PBMs, insurance and pharma companies' executives, and politicians are invested in a mar-a-lago golf club membership

We need names of the representatives on these congressional committees! Names are necessary so we can start tweeting at them and hold their feet to the fire.

Google. That information is public...unless it's coming from a Super Pac then you may have trouble finding out who the contributors are; however, there is information that breaks down where all US representatives get their money. They are public servants.

oh shoot! I did a project on this for school last year. This was really interesting to see. There's so many complicated systems and players involved. It feels impossible to get a handle on it all. That project was overwhelming lol

Meanwhile Cuba has a waaaaay better health-care system than the U.S. even though they're waaaaaay poorer than the U.S.

too bad most people in your country are busy keeping up with the Kardashians or Jenners or other Bs and keep wanking over themselfs by repeating how awesome their country is. guess that's why the higher ups can screw you over like that.

People went without paychecks for over a month during the shutdown and there were zero major protests. We are beyond fucked already.

@@CosmicCricket I think you know why nobody protested my dude. They don't want to admit that they were wrong. That their beliefs are wrong. That their ethics and values are wrong. It takes a big person to be honest with themselves. Only then can one start to truly heal, and use facts, knowledge and harmony to improve. The alternative still believe in trump. Shit cuz'... I see women err'day that still hang on to their loser husband or bae just coz' they don't want to come to terms that they fucked up. Which is why they continue to get fucked up. It's a cold world mayne, and only those that use the friction in their minds and hearts can spark flames that keep em' warm.
