From robbing banks to earning a PhD in neuroscience, former hacker Moran Cerf has unique perspective on what makes people tick. In this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Moran explains the brain science of how self-narrative determines our reality.
Moran is a fascinating blend of a wide variety of disciplines, and this diversity has led him to explore some promising, albeit nontraditional ways of investigating the brain, namely cracking open the skull and peering inside whilst the person is still living. His discoveries have made him a much sought after speaker and leading thinker who's influencing academia and business in equal measure. His innovative theories about the brain have been published in Nature, the highest-ranking journal in the world, and he consults regularly for hit shows such as Mr. Robot and Limitless.
His education is a wondrous grab bag of joy and includes a PhD in neuroscience from Caltech and both an MA in philosophy and a BSc in physics from Tel Aviv University. He's a visiting faculty member at MIT's Media Lab, and was named one of the 40 leading professors under 40.
Moran is the Alfred P. Sloan professor at the American Film Institute where he teaches a screenwriting course on science and film. He holds multiple patents and is a multi-timed national storytelling champion whose talks have garnered him millions of views. He is the professor of neuroscience and business at the Kellogg School of Management and the neuroscience program at the Northwestern university.
In this episode, Moran and Tom investigate the hidden powers of the brain and how they can be harnessed to achieve greatness.

Making money is not the same as keeping it, there are a lot of things that aren't well taught in schools. The market crisis gave me my first millions, when people stayed away from hard times I made the most of it..many credits goes to Sir Zach Micah Demers

Not at all, I invest with Sir Zach Micah Demers. I have been monitoring my portfolio performance which has made a jaw dropping $473k from just the past two quarters alone, I have learned why experienced traders make enormous returns from the seemingly unknown market. I must say it's the boldest decision I've taken since recently.

Can I just say, what I love about Tom and his interviewing style, is that he is so secure with himself that he never ever tries to out talk the guest or butt in while they speak. He always listens attentively and is humble. He’s the best interviewer I’ve ever seen bc he gives the floor to the guest and lets them give all the information without interruption. It makes it so enjoyable for me as a listener to be able to watch and learn. Kudos!!

After a terrible 2022, shell-shocked financial backers have a lot to think about and losses to recover from. An expansion report and a wealth of other data did little to alter assumptions that the Central bank would likely keep raising interest rates regardless of whether the economy slows down. This implies that portfolios will experience more losses during the first quarter of 2023. I'm currently at a crossroads deciding whether to exchange my $250k security/stock portfolio; how might the continuous market volatility work to my advantage?

I agree. This is my 1st video from this particular UKposts user & I would love to see more. However, I do not think his repeated use of the "F" word makes his Qs or comments "better" somehow. It's completely unnecessary. Repeatedly using such words make a lot of us uncomfortable & it also makes the speaker sound quite immature. Somehow, I feel that this guy is better than that. Notice that the *guest was BRILLIANT! Yet he never resorted to ANY such harsh words. If you feel you have to use the words in conversation, that's fine but when speaking in public you should think of your audience. I'd reserve them for when you're NOT doing a show or interview because it simply isn't very professional. That would be my only suggestion to someone looking to improve their show ... or theirselves.

Wow, this is a fascinating interview. I definitely want a round 2! Top takeaway: we control the narrative that we have. We can change our story and that is what the brain is for. The brain is there to make a better version of our life and therefore change it. Surround yourself with people you want to be like and you will change. Loved it.

Ah crap...you know this is what most of Dianetics (pre Scientology) is about. Repeating the painful emotion until the charge has dissipated. They even make you hold this rudimentary lie detector they say can gauge this e-motion(or energetic motion) to monitor the pain's dissipation. I am not a Scientologist, but I did read quite a bit of it 30+ years ago, and a lot of it has now become standard pop-psychology which is interesting. Don't join and don't spend money on them, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Some of the early stuff is quite interesting. I remember reading a spiritual book a long time ago where they claimed there can be no pain where you place the light of consciousness, be it physical or mental. Good luck my friend.

It is so cool to hear the science behind things we have know for thousands of years. Like suffering to succeed, or pushing through the desire to quit. We have known this since the beginning. Earl Nightingale has always said to to what others won't to succeed. Then the concept of faith and free will. Is it really your will or are all your choices a product of environment, culture, needs, and ease of accomplishing? Very cool video, and worth re-watching because it is so rich in content, and fresh perspective. Thanks Tom

Tom Bilyeu The most important part of this interview was when the interviewer said at the end that companies need to ask themselves if their products are needed on the market, if the products improve the life of the consumers. And that is where the research should go also!!! Example re the products: as a retired nutritionist I appreciate all new/young entrepreneurs in the food business who make healthy and good tasting desserts, b/c there will always be times when we want a dessert and at the same time want to eat healthy. Companies which make unhealthy desserts, just to sell their garbage to make money are unethical and have no business being in business! Today we have enough of knowledge to make only healthy desserts which at the same time taste great, so nobody needs to eat garbage. The reason why there are still consumers who do buy the garbage products is b/c they lack knowledge about how bad the garbage is for their health and at the same time they are unaware of the healthy products, where to get them. It is a question of time, to educate the masses. Re the science of a foreign item in the brain just to change the person, OMG, what idiot came up with that???? Alzheimer's disease is curable and also preventable!!! Without your frikkin plastic thing in the brain!!! You ppl make me sick! It is never okay to change the body in that way! Re Alzheimer's info sources: Dr Dale Bredesen has a whole program for healing from Alzheimers, has worked for decades on it and it works! ukposts.info/have/v-deo/i6FoqYyRlmZ1lIk.html Dr Mark Hyman, Cleveland Clinic, knows about it, probably most functional medicine doctors know about it and can use the protocol to treat their patients. Re prevention: a whole village in India has no Alzheimer's patients, it is all about life style choices! news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8492918.stm Biologist Dr Bruce Lipton writes in his books Mind over Matter, and Biology of Belief, and has videos on youtube, about genes, saying even if you have the gene, the right life style choices will prevent you from manifesting it ukposts.info/have/v-deo/h2Woro-FhH6oz2w.html

The bit about changing the past, I’ve known this for a long time but I didn’t understand that it was scientific therefore my brain had a hard time believing it until just now how I saw how it works.. modifying the memory each time you pull it up is the breakthrough for me. Thanks for doing this interview! Life changing! I really always wanted to go into neuroscience but it seemed too ambitious because I’m really not as smart as I think I am - I think I secretly fear that- BUT Moran has inspired me so deeply to pursue this passion of the brain.
