The one most important key factor that sold me this setup is the versatility of being able to use the iPad as a laptop and a tablet as well. As a nursing major, the iPad and magic keyboard is just enough for me. I personally don’t need all of the big MacOs softwares and video editing softwares. I love the fact that you can take handwritten notes on this device and also be able to type documents with the magic keyboard. Yes, the magic keyboard alone and iPad together is pricey, but I think that it is a great investment if you have the money to afford it.

A recommendation about schoolwork: I've been using a first gen iPad Pro for school for a couple of years now, and with online courses and TA/HR work I found it was really difficult for the university IT department to support it through their security systems. I also had to jump through a lot of hoops to export a file to an online upload portal in Canvas. I gave in this year and bought a MacBook Air specifically for the heavy writing assignments graduate school requires. I still prefer my iPad for personal and creative work, and will upgrade to the new Pro and this Magic Keyboard sometime soon. The Lidar scanner will be really useful for the architectural design work I'm doing. Thanks, Justine.

To the student who wanted to know if they should get a MacBook or an iPad: as a 3rd year stem major, I just got an iPad and I’m in love with it. It helps a lot with organizing note taking, easy to download powerpoints and have them side by side w your notes (or just take notes on the actual PowerPoint), allows lab worksheets to be uploaded straight to the iPad and more ! if you’re a major that will be writing a lot of essays and such I would go with the MacBook, but if you are in a major that requires an incredible amount of note takin, I would highly suggest an iPad. I use a chrome book just to type out essays from prereq classes and lab reports as needed, it gets the job done! Now that I’m here... does anybody actually know if the magents on this case are strong enough to support a case on the iPad? When I take it off to take notes I want it to be protected and I don’t wanna carry around 2 cases all the time xD

Thank you for answering my question! So glad to know you can pick up the iPad/Magic Keyboard combo from the bottom section of the case near the track pad. Picking up the iPad from that area on the Smart Keyboard folio causes the case to bend and causes unintentional key presses.

You can change the Brightness of the Smart Keyboard background lights! Just not with extra keys, but in the Settings!

My zugucase is so great for all it can do and though the keys-to-go keyboard isn’t super perfect, the small form factor and ease of using and stowing away again makes it great with the combo I think I have right now. Darn... was really trying to justify getting this new keyboard, lol. Too funny

I have the smart folio and I use the flip over- method thingy to draw on a slight incline too.

Just from the point of view of college, I am an engineering college professor and I use the Apple ecosystem almost exclusively. The iPad Pro is amazing for note taking and especially in the world we live in now, it is much easier to create and annotate content live when you are presenting the content electronically in a digital classroom environment. That being said, you were absolutely correct that there are just some software packages we use in Engineering that run much slower or sometimes are not even available to run on an iPad. There are also some software packages that are exclusively made for Windows and so it becomes necessary to do dual boots which, at least I think (although I have never tried on an iPad), is much easier to do on a Mac.

Okay so I got it. It’s WORTH IT. It’s awesome. Justine convinced me.

the whole point of the pad is not to have a keyboard...they just charged you for a screen then charged you for the keyboard to make the laptop equivalent for double the price.

Really great review of this keyboard in the last two vids. Incorporating Q&A made it even more entertaining. Favorite part was the entire segment of laptop on the lap with you in the end finally exclaiming... "I don't know if I answered your question."

Got it yesterday and did an unboxing video of it. This thing compliments the iPad very well and it’s a must have if you don’t have a MacBook (Or any other laptop)

I learned two key things from this video that I’ve not seen anywhere else. 1. Flipping the keyboard allows you to have an angled base to draw/write on, similar to a drafting table. 2. I really loved your idea of removing the iPad and placing it on the folded case to protect the back of the iPad. I have a question about #2, however. When you write/draw on the iPad that way, does it feel like you are risking scrunching the keyboard in the case?

Nice review, I actually picked one up from BestBuy yesterday and its worth every penny!

I love the idea of flipping the keyboard over like you did to use as a slightly elevated akin to drawing/draft table. I wish it designed with that in mind so the keyboard would be tucked away and inaccessible behind the elevated angled iPad.

I’ve been using my magic keyboard for a week or so now and love it! It’s perfect as a laptop replacement for me

In terms of students, I was looking for months for a new laptop that had a pen so I could draw on it. I watched tons and tons of review videos on everything that looked like it would meet my needs. I wanted a very good, color-accurate screen and a pen for drawing/painting, HDR for movies, basic web surfing and typical internet activities, and coding/developing/reverse engineering. Then I started looking seriously at the new Macbook Pro 16" as an option despite giving up the pen, which also had me look at what an iPad Pro and Pencil would look like. Among the tons of videos I watched to try to decide what I wanted, when, and for what, I was shocked at how many med school students were using the iPad Pro for their classes instead of a computer of some kind. In the end, the drawing and those reviews are what won me over to the iPad Pro because it meets 95% of my needs and meets those 95% extremely well. I still need to buy a laptop for my development and reverse engineering work, but having both is actually a very slick option (if you can afford that). From my point of view, as someone who'd always viewed the iPad Pro as a rich person's toy and charging too much of the Apple tax for what you get, having had one for a month now and using it constantly, I absolutely adore this thing and think it's worth 100% of its price. Plus you get the added benefit of much cheaper apps. You can't get anything close to ProCreate for Windows for the $10 it costs, and having used Windows and Wacom pens for ages and ages now, I've never had anywhere close to the drawing experience with those that I've had with my iPad Pro. This is one very well engineered device ecosystem, and they are just a joy to use for anything they do. I would never have believed it if I hadn't tried it for myself.

There's an option to adjust the Magic Keyboard brightness in the Settings of the iPad, but no option on the keyboard itself. I watched it on The Verge.

You are always such a trip. I have been watching your videos for a while and just subscribed. Blessings to you. Keep up the good work. I will be buying one of these come October, after the supposed September event that should be forthcoming. I have the 2017 iPad Pro and the Zagg Rugged Messenger keyboard case. I know the value of the keyboard, and the trackpad, which is my preferred way of cursor movement, as opposed to the mouse, should prove to be the ultimate mobile workspace. I am honestly, for the first time ever, considering buying only an iPad Pro without upgrading my Mac, as my computing needs have changed somewhat in the last two years. The only intriguing thing about the future, with Macs, is that they will b going to  silicon. I am quite interested in that.

I just bought a new iPad Pro for manual note taking in school and you just sold me on the magic keyboard.
