Someone has to call you out on this hypocrisy.. Michael Newton, july 2018 in Ping i500 review: "Looks like a blade, looks stunning by the ball (7i) shaping is beautiful, thin topline beautiful shaping, feel lovely, looks just stunning, just sits beautifully, hypoöpöörl 2.0 satin finish that just looks absolutely stunning, feels beautiful, feels beautiful, shaping is beautiful (5i) looks stunning, sounds a bit clicky, looks stunning (pw) feels lovely, feels good of the clubface, feels lovely, not the softest feel, finish is absolutely stunning, feel stunning, awesome job with this iron, tour looks, looks very clean" Micheal Newton in 2022 about i500 after i525 has come out: "I wasn't a massive fan of the i500, looks of it didn't tick a box for me, it was very very hot (in a bad way) it was very very loud, I didn't really like it" 😂 Like really mate? How are we supposed to take you seriously?

I know where your coming from. At the time of i500 launching it was in comparison to other ping irons a good looking club. Since that video using i500 and seeing sets and more I pick it the more I didn’t like it both shape of the head and sound. Looking at the back of the club looks clean. Fast forward 4/5 years and again in comparison to other clubs in this category I feel the i525 look and shape are good. Intro of Blurprints, i59 much better shaping imho 👍

@@MichaelNewtonGolf Thanks for answering! Ok fair to compare to other models like that but that's not mentioned on the video. I remember looking at your video of i500 and went to test it and almost threw up in my mouth after first hit, it felt horrible. For a "players" club it was instant disgust, I still get shivers seeing someone have them in a bag. Also seen tons of them for sale used. Will test i525 but not expecting a ton from it, seem like it's basically i500 with some hotmelt and more grooves. I understand you can't criticize manufacturers in review videos I just hope we could get a bit better picture of what you really feel about a club. Based on the i500 review one could assume you really liked the feel, those are direct quotes from your video..

I have to say I agree with the original comment. How can someone ie Mr Newton state that the i500 is awesome, and use other such superlatives in his description then say he didn't really like the i500 whilst reviewing the i525. Many subscribers of club reviewers use their comments to judge what to test when selecting clubs. So it is disappointing to take that advice on board when infact the reviewer subsequently states they didn't really like the i500. I'm sure there can be many improvements in club design, so should we consider the comments Mr Newton makes on today's 'superlative' models only to dismiss them once new models come out.

I like how I can shape my shots and still get extra distance without loss of spin. Plus I like the gap yardage with the clubs (about 10 yards consistently). I also think up to a 15 hcp could play these clubs, but truthfully I think if you’re committed to learning good sound swing mechanics these clubs would be beneficial. That said if you’re just starting out I’d recommend game improvement irons and move up to player distance irons when you think you’d benefit from the reduced offset in terms of shot shaping. If so your reply does make sense, I have heard that it is for changing the lie angle for technicians. I don't mind it one bit, it sure doesn't affect playability or function! It's Unique. Ping makes great playing clubs. The only function that serves is basically for Club technicians to adjust light angle basically a spot for the tool to clamp onto. I thought you guys were maybe referencing some type of hosel relief grinds like on wedges where they do heel relief grinds like tiger loves making it more easy to open the face... If so the only thing I could think for hosel Relief grinds would be to stop shanks players who like to strike the ball closer to the heel.

Most of the ‘forged hollow body’ competitors are in fact forged main chassis. Some do weld on a different face but the main chassis to which the hosel is integrated is a forging. @MichaelM-to4sg

Do you seek lower swingweight? I’ve played D2-3 for most of my life. I’m former very low-scratch golfer. At 63 years, I can’t say that any longer, at least from the blue’s, but mid-summer I’m commonly in upper 70’s-low 80’s from the blues. The lower mass and 1/2” longer graphite shaft increases swingweight. If D0 is graphite swingweight, a 130g DG shaft will likely be C4-6.

I play i210s so I like Ping irons but the more reviews I see of these the more I get concerned. They are pretty irons, but so are their competitor irons. They are expensive and it does appear from Michael's numbers that gapping is going to be an issue from 7i to PW mainly due to the 5 degree difference in loft between the irons from 7i to PW (7i-8i is 4.5 degrees), that feels a little to big a difference in loft. Michael had a 37 yard difference between 7i and 9i and even if you adjust for quality of strike that is going to be a 30-35 yard difference which is too much. Conclusion: nice but not special and overpriced
@MichaelM-to4sg
@MichaelM-to4sg 2 роки тому
Completely agree. I wonder if one can order a progressive set mixing the ‘traditional lofts’ with standard and power lofts to achieve a more suitable gapping. The cast 17-4 heads are not going to take well to adjustment in loft and/or lie thus much better to order desired angles new than attempting to adjust.

I count 18 grooves in that 9 iron. That seems to be more than most others. The 9 iron of the TaylorMade P790, a similar type of club, has only 15 grooves. Is the Ping i525 9 iron that much bigger than the TM P790, or are the Ping i525 grooves spaced closer together? Looking at photos of both it looks to me like the Ping grooves may be spaced closer together. That might raise issues of whether they are conforming or not. The USGA and R&A rules on groove measurement state in Section 3.3 - Groove Separation "If 50% or more of the measured groove separations are less than three times the maximum adjacent measured groove width then the club is non-conforming." As for the grooves themselves, Section 3.1 - Groove Width states "If 50% or more of the measured groove widths exceed 0.035” then the club is non-conforming." It seems that means if the grooves in a club are narrower than the limit, then the space between them can also be narrower, and thus there would be more grooves on the same height face. The differences are minute, just a hundreth of an inch or less, but perhaps the design engineers calculated that more grooves, though narrower, produce the desired spin rate and water shedding from the material used for this face.

Interesting that you’re praising the gapping from your results despite the 9-7 being roughly 35yds, even after dismissing the mishits. The 7-5 gapping is 25yds, which I consider acceptable, especially when we are not talking ‘scoring irons’. I personally like 10-12 yds between PW-7 for each iron as I want precise & consistent distances for scoring. Maybe Ping would allow a progressive set mixing the “traditional” lofts with std or Power lofts in a set to achieve that goal. I would at least hope so due to construction being cast 17-4, which is not very malleable. Appreciate the review but personally if I were shopping in this player’s distance catagory, I’d think the Mizuno 225, P770, T100S, ZX5/7 and X Forged CB would be higher up on my list for aesthetics, sound and value given their authentic forged construction

Michael im not sure you arent mistaken on a few things. The 525’s are more of a “scoring” iron, or a “players” distance iron. They are taylored for low to low-mid handicappers. Are you thinking they are a game improvement iron? Like a 15-30 handicap? They arent. I also believe only the Z5’s are are comparible to the group you listed. All the rest are game improvement irons designed for mid to high handicaps. Comparisons for 525’s are 225, Z5, 790, hot metal pro. While this is certainly not intended to be argumentative, i was just fit today and went with 525’s, im pretty sure what im saying is accurate. Im a 10 handicap and explained i was looking to try and get that to a 5. The clubs i listed are the clubs i hit. When i specifically asked about 223’s and 770’s he said, and i quote, “those wont help you, they are for mid to high handicaps”. “They are bigger, thicker and for players that have slower swing speeds to gain max distance and forgivness.” “They are for players just trying to hit a green.” If im mistaken i apologize, but thats the way i understand it explained from a fitter.

@@fuzzybanana3870 You either misunderstood your fitter or more likely your fitter intentionally misled you. Likely he/she witnessed your swing and determined your ball striking was too inconsistent for the clubs I listed. If you specifically look at the 223 and P770 within their oe’s lineup, the 223 slots between the 221 blades and 225 hollow body distance clubs. The 223 is smaller, less offset and a 1-piece forging, unlike the 225. The P770 is the smaller, less offset version of P790. In similar terms, Ping offers the hollow body i59 for the better ball striker while the subject i525 is its new bigger, wider soled, hollow bodied brother in lineup for those whose ball striking might be less consistent. I would agree the i525 comps are 225 or JPX921, ZX5, P790, T200, Rogue ST Pro or DCB 21. Congrats on the purchase, hope they bring improved scoring to your game in 22

@@MichaelM-to4sg good info, thanks for reply. Definately wasnt misled as i asked questions before swinging to not get a bias. I do hope the 525’s do the trick. Far better than my 12 yr old burner 2.0’s. Im a 10 handicap so hopefully they can help get me to a 5-7 or better. They were crazy consistent even on a few slight mishits. Even more impressed with what the fitting info can teach you. I now know i have a tendency to hit toward toe more often than not, which is crazy seeing how i hit the 7 iron 172 carry consistently. Cant wait to see how much better i hit when i fix that issue. Irons have never been an issue for me and i dont hit the sweet spot 7 outta 10 shots. 😂😂😂

@@fuzzybanana3870 I honestly think your fitter was doing you a favor. Folks going in for a fitting looking to try more than 2-3 different irons, 4 at very most, is exercise in futility that rarely nets good results. There’s so many factors for a fitter to consider, a skilled fitter will observe your swing, note your consistency and misses, the dynamic loft and lie to determine your angle of attack and listen to the customers goals, likes and dislikes. While you and I have similar 7-iron length, our fitting and goals would be vastly different resulting in very different club builds. For example, distance is not a priority for me and forgiveness on toe-heal hits is unnecessary. I want a club I can control ball flight and minimizes turf interaction. Small heads, narrow soles giving high spin rates are my favor. The i525 with its very strong lofts, wide sole and large cast construction doesn’t suit my game. That’s where fitter skill is so important. They listen to what you’re looking to achieve and observe your swing dynamics. They then offer a limited selection of most suitable offerings while keeping customer from being distracted by a club that would be ill-suited for the characteristics of their swing, regardless of what customer thinks they want. Call it a fitter that mislead you or not, I think he/she did what was necessary to keep you focussed on products best suited for your stated goals and your ball striking.

@@MichaelM-to4sg Oh absolutely. My fitter i thought did a fantastic job. I hit i believe 5 heads and we/he eliminated 2 in short order. I agree with distance, its not overly important conpared to apex and decent for that stopping power. Spin rate was fine. We agreed a 1 degree weak to help apex was correct choice so opted for 31.5 degrees on 7 for example, help that height. Overall was/am very happy with results and purchase. Believe after acclimation of new sticks they will be far better than my old ones. Thought fitter explained what he was doing amd more importantly, why.

Ping always seems like a wana be to me. I game their driver and woods. I am willing to overlook the sound in exchange for the performance. But at the price point for these irons, unless they have the feel of a true forged, they will have problems competing with Mizuno 225, Apex, Sub70, TM and PXG all have filled cavities and same distance. The i85 had aluminum structure added. i525 a few lines of hot metal.
