The U.S has become a bewildering place of contradictions; too much consumption, with too little production, too little happiness or fulfillment, despite all the cmorts, 40 years of factories shutting down, PE Firms and Hedge Funds owning everything, and Amazon, Big Tech and Wal Mart turning millions into wage slaves while putting mom- n- pops out of business by the millions. Fires, floods, droughts, massive heat, acidic oceans....yet we keep buying 10mpg SUVs and Pickups by the millions.....and denying their devastating effects, no one really says much about the root causes, certainly not mainstream media. I send emails, voicemails to state officials and lawmakers, I attend rallies, argue with friends, occasionally demonstrate and volunteer; but these efforts fall on deaf ears. What to do!

I think it is a kind of "blindness" that happens when generation after generation experiences what good you're talking about. They end up taking it for granted. Most of us never see the rest of the world (in part due to high living costs that make it challenging to save money and travel.) But really, I think it is a lack of desire to understand. They don't reach out and a lot of them don't try to see beyond their own experience. I've never traveled overseas -or crossed any border but I loved to learn about other cultures and countries as a kid. I married a military man in my early twenties and I learned a lot from him when he came home from deployments. They have to want to "see" and I think a lot of people don't want to. If I could be rid of anything in this world it would be willful ignorance. One very beautiful thing we have is the possibility or chance to make changes if we really want them, to find ways ---because there are ways to reach for what we want. I came from living in poverty and now I live in what is called "middle class." I have work, a home, a small family and it takes all of us but we are good. I look back and know that it was because my mother sacrificed a lot and I kept going. I hope that somehow, every person in this world can find some happiness without people trying to destroy them along the way. A lot of people are blind because they choose to be and because it bothers them too much to look and see the truth.

I left the US in 2006 after serving in the military for 9 years, decided to stay in Italy rather than coming back to the US. Haven't regretted a single second of it and I am reminded of why I did so every time I come back to visit. I am not an expat, I am an immigrant. I emigrated from the US to Italy because I simply couldn't live in that society anymore. I am of modest means, and it would still take high 6 figures to get me to live back in the US, and even then it would only be temporary. I have a better quality of life here as a resident alien than I would as a combat veteran in my own country. I would not recommend Italy to people wanting to leave the US unless they feel it in their bones as their new home like I did. It has to speak to you. There are easier places to emigrate to in the world than Italy, it's just that Italy immediately felt like home when I arrived. The proclivities and priorities of the American people are just so different from my own. People are so quick to blame the politicians they elect in the system that they continue to support without doing any self-reflection so as to change the direction they're going in. I get it, they're two different countries, and Bill was correct when he said you're just trading things you don't like about the US for things you won't like about the new country you will be living in. But there's one big...no...ENORMOUS caveat: the things that I dislike about living here pale in comparison to the things I dislike about living in the US, and no amount of money or lifestyle perks would fix it. The American people don't want to hear it, but the government is not to blame: the people are. The fact that people are divided over having a functioning social system is all the proof you need, and until they aren't divided, nothing will ever change because the politicians will court the constituents they feel will help them get re-elected and continue to poison the well. It's not just that I prefer one place over the other, it's that living in the US comes with so many non-starters that it's not even a consideration anymore, especially with a family. However, if you want to leave the US just because you want to put different desktop wallpaper on your life, then you should stay right where you are. Emigrating from the US would be a bad decision for you. However, if you feel that you are at odds with just about everything, it could be a viable option, but don't think you're going to find a utopia.
@bluceree73122 місяці тому
I'm from the UK, and like it here a lot. IMHO it is better than both the US and Italy, but that's just based on my personal life situation. I can see why Italy is a preferred place for many. Of course there are no perfect places, but people are free to express dislike of the place they currently live. Plus, there are plenty of people who have lived in one area and hated it and moved and love it. So while there are no perfect places, I think it's fair to say that some place might be the perfect place for oneself. I don't agree that any place is what you make of it. My mother comes from West Virginia and it was poor when she left. It is only poorer still today. She moved to the Bronx in the 60's, met my father, bought a 2 family house in the burbs. She moved out of poverty into the middle class in one of the toniest areas of the country. Some areas do not provide the same access to opportunities as others. The rise of right wing fascism should be of deep concern to everyone. Despite Maher saying no one actually leaves, I know 2 very well educated people who moved to England for that reason. Belgium calling here. I travel the world for work and do this for the past 30 years. Some visits were brief, others for months up to a year and this all over the globe. There is simply not "the best country" and sure is not the US. I have no connection with that country as I find it very shallow in social life and over the past years got so polarized that politics is dominating social life. The US is uber commercialized and medicated. Yes, I pay 50% on various taxes and other "innovative" payments but I do not need to worry to meet months end when there is a medical issue. There is no slave labor in the restaurants so waiters need that 17-20% tip. There is lots to say about my home country, trust me, really a lot and will never ever label it as the land of milk & honey but politicians can declare themself atheist without loosing voters, we have abortion rights, try as much as we can to keep religion out of social life, ... We still have a medical system that puts people first rather that green ... I sure love going to Southern Africa but that is a bubble (got a higher income that the locals making my life a breeze compared to theirs), I like going to South East Asia but you can't criticize politics and for sure not royals and I can go own. Once again, I am not blind for the shortcomings of my own country but wish the US was also not so blindly patriotic and dare to question rationally their daily life.

Calling restaurant workers here slave labor reveals how dumb you are. They get paid and they're free to leave at any time. So the opposite of slavery. And if you think the U.S. today is blindly patriotic you're dead wrong. @ets56972 місяці тому
Bill Maher literally said that the US is not the best country in the world. His whole video was about how "there is no best country in the world." You completely missed the point of the entire segment. I lived in Paris for 12 years and Brussels for 2. Belgium is cool to visit for a day or two - sure. But Belgium is one of the most depressing countries I've ever lived in - especially cities like Antwerp. Not to mention Brussels is going to be majority Muslim by 2030. So pretty soon - it won't even be Belgium anymore. If the only reason you live in a country is because if you get sick, you won't pay a medical bill? Then you must be getting sick all the time and be in the hospital all the time or have a condition and need a hospital or doctor all the time - otherwise it's not much of a reason to live somewhere. What do you do with your days? Wait to fall down the stairs and break your leg so you can take advantage of not paying a bill? Once again - Bill Maher wasn't saying the US was better - he was saying that wherever you go - there are problems. Maybe rewatch the video?

There's no move to curtail racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny and xenophobia. On the contrary, the movements in the USA are to intensify and celebrate all of those. How many EFFECTIVE homeless reduction programs are there in your city? Is there any move, ANYTHING AT ALL, to stop the corporate rape of the economy, resulting in record profits, high inflation, and price-gouging for all? Things are not moving at all towards getting better, only getting worse. You can stay and hope that things will get better, but is that an intelligent choice? Is improvement likely to happen?

i notice he couldnt compare USA to any other 1st world nations.
@42031052 місяці тому
I mean you could also compare it to the middle east... Which has a bunch of thriving democracies, until the CIA murdered all their leaders and installed a bunch of dictators. It's almost like the US can only look good if it makes other countries worse.

Lol, his comparisons always make me laugh, but not in the way he intends

@@kanedNunableI mean he did but it was silly comparisons that didn't have much substance.

Appreciate this message. I don’t see the attraction of other countries. America 🇺🇸 is big & beautiful - lots to see and places to enjoy!

I know dozens of people who have moved overseas when they retired and they have no regrets!
@davidortega33932 місяці тому
Yes when they retire. As in don’t have to earn a living anymore. Having worked for a European company, Americans have no idea how good they have it in terms of salary earned and salary kept (as in not going to taxes). American corporations are also way more diverse than European companies, so can’t really call America racist. Yes, you don’t get months of vacation, but you earn US dollars, which are accepted everywhere and desired by everyone.
@larsonpark38192 місяці тому
@@davidortega3393 Please don't spread this notion that the USD is "accepted everywhere". This is absolutely not true and it makes Americans look like arrogant simpletons.
@thomasturpin1242 місяці тому
Dozens after they retired? AFTER they retired? What county enabled them the opportunity to gain enough wealth to move there? I'm gonna bet you can't name ten of them. If they're your "friends" on fb, it doesn't mean you know them personally. You're probably just a clown.
@user-hh9qs8tc1s2 місяці тому
Yes and they do it with American money,mostly in the form of social security, 401k savings with a match from their American company.They also do it to become a burden on another countries Healthcare system.And to live in an impoverished country where they are treated like rich people,so basically exploiting the poor.

It's a healthy experience and a privilege to spend time in other countries, partly to appreciate things we take for granted in America, but also how America has no excuse for many things. There are free societies. One doesn't have to choose places like Cuba or Ecuador or Sri Lanka or Russia. I spent much of my life in America trying to fix it and it got worse. Now i live somewhere else. Time for my wooden ball game...

"Child marriages, food shortages and the strictest abortion laws in the world." Apart from the food shortages, that describes some parts of America.

People starve to death in America. People freeze to death in America. The best you can say is that there are better dumpsters to try and get a meal from.

Cancel culture has just about totally eliminated " Free Speech." So at least you can still get enough food. Even if it comes from public assistance. Problem is a lot of folks seem to be working AGAINST " fixing it. "
