The Japanese company Subaru presented the new generation Forester crossover. The new generation of Subaru Forester has improved safety and performance, as well as ongoing improvements to the chassis, structural rigidity of the body, and a 180-horsepower flat-four installed under the hood.
The Forester gets standard torque vectoring all-wheel drive, hill descent control, and the WRX's dual-pinion electronic power steering option, which supposedly offers better handling both on and off-road. The 221mm ground clearance claimed by Subaru is identical to the previous version of the car.
Externally, the Forester's body panels are smoothed around the headlights and raised above the wheel arches to give it a more aggressive stance. The new grille is widened to better highlight the swept-back LED headlights, but the Forester retains a tall cabin, both for headroom and brand recognition. Despite its boxy shape, the Forester has some aero tricks along its flat sides, notably a new vent at the rear of the wheels to vent air out of the wheel, reducing lift on the track. Base and Premium trims come with 17-inch wheels, Limited gets 18-inch ones, and Sport and Touring models ride on 19-inch wheels with a new bronze finish.
The interior design is an evolution of the familiar look, with the centerpiece being a portrait touchscreen built into the front fascia between a pair of vertical air vents. The Forester now offers an 11.6-inch vertical screen and wireless smartphone charging on all trim levels except the base, which gets a pair of 7.0-inch screens for infotainment and climate control. For the driver, the new seat provides better thigh and lower back support, and the upper section is narrowed for better rear visibility. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, and the Touring trim now comes with ventilated and heated front seats. New for the 25th model year include a panoramic sunroof and a foot-activated fifth door. There's also an improved EyeSight system, which now has a wider field of view and can more quickly recognize cyclists and pedestrians on the road and apply emergency braking. To help the driver see better around them, an optional 360-degree camera is now available. The new Forester also has the most spacious cargo area the model has ever had: 838 liters with the seats up or 2,107 with the seats down. There are also screw mounting points for a variety of accessories, and the luggage compartment splits into two sections, with models equipped with power liftgates now getting a proximity sensor.
Under the hood is Subaru's familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 180 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable transmission is standard, and on higher trims it offers a manual mode with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The car accelerates to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds. So is the latest version of the automaker's all-wheel drive system, which has been revised for quicker response and active torque distribution to the rear wheels. Like the old Forester, X-Mode is standard on all but the base trim, helping improve off-road performance.
The Japanese say that upon entering the market there will be 5 trim levels available, and then a hybrid version will probably appear. Unfortunately, Subaru hasn't released any details about what form this powertrain might come in or how much power it will make. The 2025 Subaru Forester will arrive at dealers next spring, and the automaker won't release pricing information by then. However, the SUV is unlikely to be cheaper than the 2024 Forester's starting price of $28,390.
As one of the best-selling SUVs on the market, the Subaru Forester has a loyal following that appreciates its practicality, efficiency and capability. The automaker doesn't plan to change that with the new Forester, but regular customers should still appreciate the stiffer structure, larger cargo area and additional vehicle technology.
