New York State Prisons: How to Avoid Rape in Prison - Men's Orientation

The Marshall Project

День тому

In 2015, New York State prisons began showing state-made orientation videos offering advice on how to identify, and avoid, sexual predators behind bars. This is the version that male prisoners would see.
The Marshall Project obtained exclusive access to the state-made videos, which were funded through a grant from the federal government under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). The videos were directed by T.J. Parsell, who shares how he was raped in prison, and feature other people imprisoned across New York. Incarcerated people workshopped the videos' content and are referred to as the experts.
To learn more about these videos from New York State prisons, read our 2015 reporting:

Your absolutely correct. Unfortunately though the people that run this corrupt business feel like that should be part of a punishment for inmates. How is punishment for a rapist when he is still acting out his sick fantasies in prison with no punishment ? Rape in prison is even a joke in mainstream media, and movies.

Go into prison for armed robbery with a child’s toy gun, leave prison the victim of gang rape. He came out with more trauma than he came in with, how is anybody supposed to get a fresh start and make better choices when they’re more broken when they came in? @@ZRBx4 Two wrongs don’t make a right - the inevitable result of crime has to be some form of curtailing of personal freedoms and rehabilitation. Truly, as much as I know there are evil humans who I would happily see suffer - SA can’t ever be the way of doing that, because the person committing that act is turning themselves into that same monster capable of doing something like that. If it’s another monster, but someone who is twisted in the usual criminal way has no qualms about tearing their soul further to punish someone who has committed acts far worse to those who are totally innocent - I don’t see any moral dilemma about letting one monster destroy another. It’s like the rubbish is taking itself out. But for something like an attempted armed robbery? That is an awful thing to do and that is a traumatic thing to put someone through. It isn’t monstrous enough to deserve Big Bubba, almost nothing is monstrous enough to justify that.

Been to prison myself. As long as you're laid back, stick to your group, don't join gangs, and don't start shit with others, you will more than likely be fine. If someone tries to cross you, you MUST ALWAYS be assertive and fight back. Respect is EVERYTHING on the inside. You cannot let any affront to you slide, no matter how small. I had a client who told me about his experience in Prison.... 5 years for murder (I think he served three), and he said generally the same thing. He was about 25 if I remember correctly. He learned how to become invisible. He was a small black young man who was better educated than most and had been in no trouble before the murder. He had just snapped due to a lot of mental abuse by his girlfriend AND exhaustion from work. The jury gave him probation but the probation department and the judge just looked for a reason to revoke him. He has done OK after prison.

I was going thru heroin withdrawals so some girls offered me their Advils, and I was only gonna be in for 4 days so I was also offered shower supplies since I wouldn’t be in long enough to get commissary. And since you have zero appetite while in w/d’s, I gave away my food allll the time. Well, more like girls would see most of my food was uneaten and ask if they can have it to which I always said sure. Then when it was finally time to get out, I gave away all my supplies to the other girls in my pod. Never once did anyone expect something back; we gave and took freely and accordingly. I spent 13 months in prison at age 36 and it was a COUNTY prison not a state prison. Check your ego at the door, and keep your eyes and ears open until you find friends you trust. The more other inmates see you friendly with other inmates, they'll likely leave you alone. Do your pushups and try to lighten up and not take it so seriously. Don't stare at anyone and always be respectful to both staff and inmates. Say thank you if someone offers you something but never ask for anything. Be polite to staff and they'll be much more likely to help you and give you things. I did very easy time and even tried to help others. I never got in even one fight or argument. It definitely sucks but you CAN make the most of it just by using common sense.

The candy bar thing is real. What I mean is, if you're just coming into jail (upstate NY) from Rikers Island, when you hit Downstate correctional facility, which is a reception jail of new inmates, that is where your first test of this begins. As a Bronx crip since 1996, I went upstate in 2000, along with a Latin King member from East New York, who I was cool with on Rikers Island in 1999. As we got to our cells in Downstate, we met candy bars on our beds (he being in a separate cell of his own). We being so young (17), we were naïve, so we honestly thought this was just part of the jail system of welcoming new inmates. King Trigga [the Latin King] ate his candies. I was skeptical, so I put mines aside. Later on that day as we exited our cells, an old-timer (someone who been in jail for a long time) came to us and told us not to eat the candies left in our cells. That it's a common set up by a prison predator. We were shocked! We had no idea! Trigga already ate his, so that meant that the booty-bandit would feel as though he owes/owns him now. Since I didn't eat mines, I was glad. Later that day, some old creep came to my cell. He was the porter/trustee inmate. I was doing pushups. He made a slick/funny sexual remark, that he liked my abs. He tried to touch my abs through the bars. I backed up. He grinned. He asked me about the chocolate bars that he left on my bed. I told him I didn't eat them. I gave them to him. Since King Trigga was in the cell next to me, I told him about the old creep that tried to come on to me. Trigga said he tried the same thing with him too. Trigga was heated since he tried to press him about the candies he ate. Trigga came up with a plan to knock him out with a soap in a sock. He was going to put about 4 bars of korekrat jail-house soaps in a sock as a weapon. Next morning, Trigga called him to his cell and beat the booty-bandit down with the soap and sock. They sent Trigga to the box/hole. I was kinda worried since I didn't know anybody else in the entire jail, just in case the booty-bandit tried something again. Lucky for me, the next day, I ran into 3 other crips whom I knew from C74 Rikers Island just few weeks/months prior in 1999. So in a sense, I had protection in case the old creep tried something again. And like I said, at that time in January 2000, I was 17 years old. The Latin King, Trigga, was also 17. The 3 other crips I met again, were all 17. All of us came up state from C74 Rikers Island adolescence. So we were seen as fresh meat to predators. Why I said all this is because I recently came across a video from a dude saying that the candy bar on your bed thing, is a myth. He's from California, so maybe that didn't go down there. But in the NY prison system, I have personal experience that that shit was real!

@Pulsonar so you just think I'm waiting for bad news? Obviously I would hope this doesn't happen but as I said, he has a mental impairment, so it's not just sitting down and coaching him once about something and he gets it. Learn a little on mental disabilities
@Pulsonar
@Pulsonar 6 місяців тому
@@algore4u No need to be arrogant and cynical like that man, every mental health case is unique. It would really insult you if I were to make base assumption that your unique case falls into some general category and then I behave with condescending and patronising advice like I got your picture. That’s why I asked questions as I have a brother who has mental impairment too and he distances himself from everyone the last 21 years. That’s why you’re comment struck a chord , my questions m wasn’t to criticise or to be negative, it was to learn, understand and perhaps support from a mutual perspective. My apologies if my comment read different and it got your back up.

Sexual predators walk amongst us on the inside and outside...im a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of my father. I know the signs. You never get over rape and the only people who should be exposed to rape are the rapist themselves. Powerful video and some brave stories. I hope those affected are receiving help.

Y’all are young guys? That’s good to know it helps people. Don’t use drugs out here either. Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s there was stuff out here that could be fun. It’s not like that anymore. Y’all got the short end of the stick in that deal, but just let it go and stay away. Your drugs out there today has its own drugs. They aren’t chemists, and you shouldn’t be trusting them to press your pills or mix your anything else. I guess I’m not terrified of green yet but I sure keep waiting to hear stories about them f’ing that up, too.

Fair or unfair, men who are victims of SA...should just keep that stuff to themselves (maybe get some therapy in private). People look at men differently when it's known that they are victims of SA. If something like that ever happened to me...I'd somehow find the will to internalize that SH1T and move on.

It's terrible how a short sentence can become a long one if you have to defend yourself from crazies and perverts. The justice system and jail system is so dysfunctional. No one serving a year should have to get in trouble in there and end up serving 10 or 20 years because they had to fight against a sexual assault that they didn't even start.

My step father did 17.5 straight state/fed and did his time in some seriously dangerous Facilities. He used to school me on this type of stuff and how to survive in prison. He never bragged, it was more matter of fact and his ability to read people and situations was out of this world. I really credit him for being a strong male power of example to me at a point were I felt I could have gone either way. He really taught me some powerful lessons and many truths both good and bad

Huge thanks to all these men for speaking up and educating potential fish on how to behave. I just wanted to add my two cents. My problems in prison came from me being too secluded, too much of a lonewolf, too distrustful. I'm a very antisocial person due to my past and it always created this tension between me and other inmates. People thought i was plotting or up to no good or something. Good thing i used my knowledge of certain things to finally break this wall of tension and bind with my cellies, i rendered myself useful and since then my time went smoother. I guess what i'm trying to say is personal boundaries are a good thing just don't build brick walls around you, people will think you are hiding something. Good luck to everyone reading and stay out of prison, it sucks bad.
