In a series of peculiar events, the BJP’s Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed from Gujarat’s Surat Lok Sabha constituency on April 21. The declaration came days before polling even began for the elections, as Congress candidate Nilesh Kumbhani’s nomination was cancelled and eight other independent candidates “withdrew”.
Four affidavits signed by Kumbhani’s relative, a BJP lawyer, and allegations of forgery were the centre of the nomination cancellation. In the aftermath, Kumbhani went incommunicado and sparked allegations of a “collusion”.
