LiteFighter CataMount 2 Military Tent - First Look
...
Retail Price : $553
Camp : OCP
Agenda Free Link : litefighter.com/product/catam...
Setup Impressions : Easy especially for a 4 season tent.
I will touch upon this in more detail with the Before You Buy Episode which will be coming up soon.
Potential Issues :
Let me ask my cold weather experienced friends what potential problem that they see with this tent; pause and comment down below. This is a real issue that can be a pain in ass. As snow falls, if the poles are warm enough, snow will melt and refreeze and when you go to breakdown the tent the poles are locked into place and have to be melted to come a part. It doesn’t sound like a problem but it can be in certain circumstances.
External, weather exposed poles can be a nightmare in certain situations. I have plenty of experiences with such setups and having poles that have froze together can be a major hinderance.
Quality : Everything here looks to be excellent; seams, poles are substantial, stitching, seam tape
Tent appears to be very solid, lots of guy points so the tent can be anchored in bad weather.
Includes snow anchors as well as stakes
Two doors is awesome
Heavy as h*ll.
Large too! This will take up the main body of most backpacks
Storage bag is awesome; it is what I refer to as burrito bag style as you basically wrap the contents and cinch.
Can be setup without the inner, with and also without a groundsheet as well.
The CataMount 2 has been extensively tested by Natick Labs, The US Army Cold Regions Test Center (CRTC), and used by units in Alaska, Europe, and the Northern United States. This mountaineering tent is ideal for units who train and fight in cold weather conditions, and need a proven lightweight shelter to protect their soldiers against the elements.
Our CataMount 2 Cold Weather Tent includes a 70D nylon inner tent, a 30D nylon rainfly cover, nylon floor but I’m not certain what the denier rating is, an all-in-one aluminum pole frame, ten ground stakes, an accessory kit, fabric repair patches, a tent pole repair splint, four tent guy-outs with molded tensioners, a waterproof visual user guide, an accessory kit bag, pole bag, waterproof groundsheet, and a tent carrying case.
: NSN 8340-01-685-4246,
Those are my initial impressions; I will have a Before you Buy episode detailing the setup process and also at least one, possibly two Test Night Episodes will be coming up to test waterproofness and moisture/condensation control

Exterior poles allow for improvised set up. If a pole breaks on internal system the structure is useless, external allows you to use a tree or stick as a tie out (tarp style). Plus the military never concerned itself with any inconvenience to soldiers. Lol

In the fighting world the Exoskeleton helps in the camouflaging. A camo net will be the 1st layer on top of the poles, then indigenous objects from around the area. In cold weather op's we use gun oil to lightly oil all metal-to-metal surfaces. e.g. bayonet/scabbard

While Winter camping in -30C, my Eureka tent poles would freeze too. I stopped that by squirting each joint with WD-40. It worked!

Apply candle wax to the tube joints and your free from freezing joints. WD 40 or oils have the potential of dripping onto the fabric. Any problems use a pocket warmer to heat up the connection. Looking forward to see how warm this tent is in sub zero temps.

Spraying the pole joints with a silicon lubricate helps (I DO THIS TO ALL TENT POLES.) I also cover the joints with scotch brand electrical tape so water can not get in. I always carry 2 inch wide Gorilla tape and 1 inch wide scotch brand electrical tape in my kit. In my 63 years on this planet and 50 plus years camping the two things I have learned are: "Prepare For the Worst, and Hope for the Best." AND “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." Can't wait to see the test night videos.

Traditionally, you throw a poncho over the top for additional protection and another below as a ground cloth. I was taught that "YEARS" ago and OLD infantry manuals directed the same. I hope that helps with traditional military planning.

Another great vid Luke. The ability to strongly anchor an exterior pole tent is one of the biggest benefits of tents with that design. Just wrap the guy line cord around the pole a few times before staking it out. It's much more sturdy than guy lines that are simply sewn to the fly of most tents and anchored to the pole with the hook and loop strap.

Just watched a video where a group of 4 people backpacked Denali mountains for a couple of weeks and the single pole hubba bubba and a few other people that had single pole tents had serious issues with the tents not holding up to the wind. They didn't mention it in the video but showed the tents nearly folding in half and being almost flattened by the wind! This is why I would definitely stay with a tent that offer's multiple x patterns in pole set up.

It looks like good kit. A lightweight second fly - perhaps in winter camo - fitting OVER the poles would take care of the freezeup problem, in addition to adding another wind/cold barrier, depending how far down it goes. Might also try some freeze-resistant silicone grease on the socket prods.

A great looking tent - not bothered by exo-poles as where I am we rarely get freezing rain or frozen snow and it's so much easier on an outer-pitch first tent to just be able to clip the fly up rather than thread poles through sleeves especially when they're wet and they stick.

Hi Luke, love your work. IMO pretty much the only channel that has a decent structure of review and is looking at all facets of these products in detail. Since you have all these great reviews on the much heavier but very durable and effective military style gear I would LOVE to see test runs on superlight and ultralight equipment... it seems to suit your style a little bit more (short 1 man stealthy trips) and I am very curious to see how a Big Agnes Scout Carbon 2/ ZPacks Plexamid / Tarp Tent ProTarpLi style tent works for your use cases and in the longer term. I realise these are super expensive tents and probably a little bit harder to get a hold of but literally EVERYBODY reviewing these tents hikes on what is an unpaved equivalent of a sidewalk with drinking fountains every kilometre. Your insight on whether the weight savings on this ultralight gear is worth the drawbacks in durability would be much appreciated. Merry christmas and happy new year!

Suggestion: "O" rings can be found in a flat/square profile. You could aquire the suitable ID to fit the poles, and keep them on the poles. After setup, just slide them over the connection joints. Very nice video. Another possible solution may be to use a few inches of heat-shrink tubing and only shrink the upper section to the pole which would direct water over and past the connecting joint.

Exo-skeleton is the ONLY way to go ! The freezing problem doesnt matter if the poles are inside or outside, when it's cold enough. The fly freezes stiff and the internal poles freezes to the fly, if you have internal pole setup and the poles freeze together anyway. With external poles, just silicone them, like your cardoors. External poles helps in draping a tarp on top, a camo-netting and adding natural camouflage. I will add, that some exo-tent's use pockets that you slide the poles trough. Dont buy that, if you use the tent in freezing weathers. There is a reason this tent uses clips !
@tenhirankei

@6:30 I had just realized that the rainfly was on the tent, but it's under the poles! Now I see the problem and how to (maybe) fix it. Either change it, so that the rainfly goes on the outside. Or add an extra one over the poles. Yeah, the last one will add to the weight of the tent, but it also reduces the time it needed to brake down the poles.

Looking at the poles and the way that the inner tent is inside the exterior shell reminds me very much of my Hilleberg Saivo, only with smaller vestibules. Comparing the dimensions of the Catamount with tents on the Hilleberg website, it seems to come in right between the Saivo, which is a 3 person tent, and the Tarra, which is their 2 person version. One of the benefits I have seen with the poles like that is the ability to make it more versatile, like if you want to do only the inner or outer tent instead of a dual wall tent. Admittedly I haven't used my tent nearly as much winter camping as I had hoped I would (Friends all chickening out on the cold) unless the outer poles were encased in seriously thick ice, like half an inch or more, I don't think it would be difficult to get the tent off the poles. I live in Maine, we get at least one good ice storm a year recently, and I would not hesitate to use my tent in those storms. Another cool thing with those tents and the sleeves for the poles on the Hilleberg is that they are thick enough to add a second pole into, and you can clip every other clip onto a different pole. Those extra poles make it feel absurdly sturdy. I wonder if that is something you could do on Catamount. Anyways, love the channel, and the website, and I look extra forward to more on this tent if only to compare to my own.

The two diagonal long poles really should have continuous sleeves end to end, or over the top section at least. So many hooking points create weak stress points, and a continuous sleeve would help a 4 season tent be stronger under a heavy snow load... I am Canadian, and that is always a winter season consideration!

Cool tent. I don't mind the exterior poles since I live in Texas. Pretty pricy tent though, but it sounds like they didn't skimp on quality and materials.

I love my USMC 2 person tent made by Diamond Brand. But this one looks promising for my future camping trips! Does this fly block light?

I remember you carrying a small spray canister of WD40 on some of your adventures. Spraying the connections with WD40 will help prevent freezing. Five hundred bucks is actually more than reasonable for a four season tent especially when it is made for the soldier in mind. I would not backpack with the entire tent, only taking the fly and using a groundsheet. Soldiers save weight by splitting the tent with a partner. However, I would take it all on an overland camping trip.

I know it sux to have to do it but I've had some success spraying the outer poles a couple of times a year depending on use with rain-x it does make a noticeable difference.
