I saw the movie a couple days ago, and i really thought Jo ellen did an amazing job.. not as awkward as caitlin but that could be a directors thing? but a very believable performance

To me it seems most of the time she's smiling here are awkward smiles.

@@BellasLife97 oh yeah. Its definitely a directors choice. Based on what I've seen Jo seems to be doing a great job with what they're giving her. This just isn't exactly how I pictured Emma and that's probably on me. I hope enjoy the portrayal more in more context.

They had great chemistry and the actors did so well, but one kiss at the end like the show... just felt like the film was more about deedee and barry and less about emma... which could have made it amazing.

Exactly my point. I watched the trailer and I was so confused as to why Jo Ellen Pellman's Emma was smiling throughout scenes that doesn't call for smiling. I'm not comparing Caitlin to Jo in any way, but even if I've never seen the actual show and watched this movie for the first time, I would be questioning why in the world this girl who had the worst happen to her and be in moments where she's the most vulnerable be smiling all the time?

And to think Tom Cruise was a control freak and butt to her.

Personally I didn't like the number, the choreography or the performance very much. I cringed a couple of times. But in its defense and to give the movie the benefit of the doubt: This is just one number which is part of an entire movie, and it might well be one of the "smaller" numbers. I guess we'll have to see the whole thing first. Perhaps I'll think you're right in the end, who knows?

Yes and whats up with the lighting, it did more work in this scene then Nicole danced...it needed the Fosse film style of Cabaret's 'Maybe This Time' & Rob Marshall's 'Roxie' number; the back and forth shift between fantasy and real life...how much would it cost for an empty soundstage, pin spots, and mirrors to create a real Fosse number.

Sadly film directors these days don’t know how to film a musical number. They rely on too many closeups, something you won’t see much of in the classic MGM musicals.
