Nigel Farage challenged James O'Brien to a debate over his criticism of UKIP, what followed was one of the most electrifying interviews LBC has seen.
Following James's critical comments about Ukip, then leader Nigel Farage challenged James to a debate.
And in a very tense interview with James O'Brien, Mr Farage defended the parties from other countries he chooses to sit with at the European Parliament, some of which have expressed extreme views.
"What I've done in the European Parliament is try and draw a line to say we will not sit with people who we believe to be on the extremes. We will sit with people who we believe have a reasonable balanced point of view" Mr Farage said.
"I'll be honest - we've had a problem, in this group, with one of two members of the Northern League. But equally - the Conservative Party had problems with the man who celebrated the SS invasion of the Baltic states.
"We have said we will not sit with parties like Front Nationale -we are not a party that wants a billing to the far right."
He added: "If you look at the associations everyone has to form in European Parliament - a degree of compromise is needed."
Mr Farage also said that any Ukip members with racist, extreme views are expelled from the party.
"Wherever we have found people who have extreme, racist, unpleasant views - we have unceremoniously got rid of them" he told James live in the studio.
"I have tried to protect the party by making clear that anybody that had previously been a BNP member - cannot join. And to hold up the views of a handful of people as representative of Ukip -isn't true."
In an interview that has been described in the media as "car-crash radio", "brutal" and "forensic", Mr Farage looked rattled before his Director of Communications Patrick O'Flynn interrupted and called an end to the debate.

My family nearly lost our home due to the E. U giving Ford Motor Company a cheap 80k loan to move to cheap labour Turkey on 2013. Fords of Southampton employed thousands of workers since the early 70’s. We now have 4 low paid jobs between the 2 of us to cover outgoings since 2013. That’s what the E.U did for thousands of people made redundant in Southampton due to encouraging greed. It’s the rich like you who don’t give a toss about hard working families.
@ysgol3
@ysgol3 Рік тому
@@chickedee1085 Hi, thanks for your reply. May I say i do give a toss, I really do, and I'm truly sorry about your difficulties. May I respond with this. There was nothing to stop the UK parliament introducing stronger minimum wage law to stop the cheap labour issue you describe - NOTHING. The minimum wage introduced by Labour, now the living wage under the Tories, was nothing to do with the EU, neither its existence nor its level, so it can be increased, and could have been before Brexit, at any time. Also, the EU allowed countries to have cautious immigration policies - look at Belgium for example, I know your point was about exporting jobs abroad, so I just mention that. Turkey isn't in the EU of course. So the despicable Ford decision - you mention 80k which to a company like Ford is peanuts - was a despicable business decision by them for which, may I suggest with full respect, they were to blame when you go to its root, not the EU. Please reply if you think I'm wrong - I'm always keen to learn! Best wishes.
@gm8188
@gm8188 Рік тому
😂😂😂 the ford motor story was nothing to do with a 80k EU invest 🤦 they spent millions relocationing and setting up shop in Turkey. It was purely a business decision. They went from making 22,000 vehicles in Essex a year too 185,000 in turkey. Turkey was the cheapest place they calculated they could go in Europe to do business...Europe the continent, not the EU. Turkey isn't a part of the EU, but a part of it is in Europe the continent. Sorry for your family issues, but don't blame the EU, blame the rich American business owners of ford who just want to make more money. The EU don't control where American companies set up shop

Whether you think Mr Farage crumbled or not in this interview (I think he did), you should support journalists finally asking him tough questions. The fact that UKIP supporters seem to plug their ears and sing 'smear' all the time is quite worrying. If you want to vote for someone, surely you want their skeletons to be laid bare? UKIP can either join the big-boy table and take a bit of beating by the press, or they can remain un-scrutinised while sitting in the fringes. Perhaps people are afraid that Farage is not any different from the rest of the political class.

cookdave This man could potentially be our PM in a years time, he could be representing us on the world stage. Well, fat-chance of that really, but you know what I'm getting at. If he wants to lead a party that is vying for parliamentary presence, he has to accept that his character and views are going to be forensically picked apart. It's part of the job-description, if you will.
@cookdave
@cookdave 10 років тому
Sure, devote one or two questions to personal matters by all means. But a 20 minute rant labeling someone a 'racist'? That isn't an intelligent interview, its a character assassination designed to bury the debate we should be having on our membership of the EU. In future I think Farage needs to agree beforehand how these 'interviews' are to be conducted, because if he's just going to be fending off accusations of racism its a waste of everybody's time.
@leepedder2924
@leepedder2924 10 років тому
cookdave Bury? The EU debate has been discussed in the media ad nauseam for at least a year. More so than even the economy. Perhaps rightfully so, if that is what rests on the people's minds. Regardless, 20 mins examining Farage's character and views is hardly going to sink the EU question. As the leader of a political party, it is essential that these type of questions are asked. It can't really be classified as a character assassination. Those things are usually done in the papers, where the target cannot respond directly. If there was no issue to be discussed, Farage would have effortlessly brushed-off the questions live on the airwaves. He had the chance. The fact he wasn't able to shows that they struck a nerve. O'Brien's interview style was blunt and confrontational, sure, but his questions weren't misleading. How more interviews should be done if you ask me. The GE campaign is going to be a long and bumpy road. If people are discomforted by this level of interrogation, things are not going to bode well for the next year.
@cookdave
@cookdave 10 років тому
His interview style was brunt and confrontational I agree, there's nothing wrong with this, but the questions he asked told me nothing about UKIP other than the fact the O'Brien thinks they're a racist organisation. He talked about the bi-lingual status of Farage's children for example, what has this got to do with anything? Does anyone care about the inner workings of the Farage household? No. He was just throwing anything and everything at him to make him look bad. This was not a serious political interview. O'Brien just used it as an opportunity to insult someone he doesn't like.

The achievements of Muslim math scholars were imported into Europe 300 years later by the Italian mathematician Fibonacci

@ste shaw Also these comparisons you make seem intellectually disingenous. Neil Armstrong had the backing of NASA and years of scientific research supporting him. Not to mention that the space race wasn't exclusively a western frontier. Russia was closely competing with the US at that time. In the time of the prophet Mohammed popular conceptions about space were greatly different to now (in both Europe and the Middle East). I could make a similar argument by saying that the Chinese invented printing 500 years before it was introduced into Europe. Does that make Europeans stupid and illiterate compared to the Chinese? But you see, a straight answer is very often a trap. If a journalist asks you "when did you last hit your mother?", what sort of a straight answer are you going to give? You could say "I never hit my mother!" to which the journalist's response is often "so you're in denial?" A detailed answer, with groundwork preparations for context etc., is often required in order to strike the correct tone which the journalist is (quite wrongly) trying to skew. Of course, a balance has to be struck between political spin and journalistic bias - between deference on the one hand and overly adversarial questioning on the other - but the politician has to be as defensive against the truth being skewed as the journalist has to be about it being obscured.

Finally someone tackle the 'successful businessman' masquerade. Farage actually lied about his position in this failed enterprise. According to Company House records, Nigel Paul Farage (b.1964) was a director of the Farage Ltd. between 2003 and 2006. He was also secretary between 2004 and 2011. Now we know who will benefit from the 'right to be forgotten.
