As electric vehicle (EV) plug-in chargers get more efficient and more widely deployed, Chinese EV maker NIO, known for producing premium smart EVs, has embarked on the development of battery-swapping stations. The U.S.-listed company sees the technique as a unique alternative to traditional chargers.
Will battery-swapping become the go-to solution for recharging? At this year's Beijing Auto Show, CGTN correspondent Wang Tianyu spoke to William Li, founder and CEO of NIO, to understand the company's future strategy.

Best EV company out there. Smart and well thought out design and infrastructure. All while Elon Musk is trying to inhabit planet Mars . What EV company do you suspect will be thriving in the next 5-8 years? The guy going to Mars or the guy actually putting thought into his overall EV Ecco system ? I’m a Nio believer but United States has a big problem allowing tech that blows theirs Away into the country.

Absolutely. A very logical option. Many people think it is sold as the only option. Swappable batteries have many advantages. Updated battery, better residual value when selling, less downtime for fleets, taxi, etc.

Battery swap is what ev needs 3 minutes is like pumping a gas very convenient for long distance driving don’t have to wait for charging on street

Make the same batteries so that all cars can benefit of that. Like mobile phones just the same charger, this is easier for costumers.

Nio is fighting a losing battle. Charging times keep getting shorter. There is less and less need for swapping. Aside from the inconvenience, swappable batteries compared to fixed batteries are less efficient in terms of frame stiffness, weight, cost, and protection against water intrusion.

The problem with faster charging means batteries life span wont last as long (for now anyways). You have the option to buy the car with the battery and and charge yourself.

You also forget another crucial part. Used electric cars don't sell that well, as it is costly to change the batteries in current EVs. Used EVs are piling up all over Asia and America. With battery swapping, you remove this problem all together. NIO is only viewed as an EV company, when in fact it's also an energy network systems company.
