Quick overnight camping trip without a shelter. I set up with my very basic gear and two cheap sleeping bags, a tarp, and a folding chair. Beef stew for dinner cooked over a roaring fire.

Proud to say, in my 50's I primitive backpacked overnight with no tent - slept on a thermarest w/emergency blanket for a cover, just carried an emergency kit, water and gorp to eat. Needless to say, it wasn't snowing. But I'll never forget the thrill.

One of your best productions yet, Steve. It brought memories of 60+ years ago when my three brothers and I would camp just like that (minus store-bought wood, plastic tarp and a real camp ground). An old chunk of canvas, a pack of hotdogs and all the blankets we could smuggle out of the house, and off to the woods. Sadly, there are only three of us left now, but we still camp that way. I’ve stopped watching most of the bushcrafting channels because they tend to leave folks with the idea that if you don’t use a fire steel and carry at least a thousand dollars worth of gear, you’re not a real bushcrafter. They call themselves bushcrafters, I call them flatlanders. Please don’t change a thing.

Yeah, real bushcrafting is,walking into the deep dark woods with nothing but the clothes on your back and maybe a pocket knife. I'm not a bushcrafter, I'm a camper, but when I want to watch bush crafting videos, I don't want to see a camping store sized wad of gear.
@b.w.22
@b.w.22 3 роки тому
Man, I love these videos of yours. People take “camping” so serious sometimes. Like bringing their tactical gear, super knives, whittling a special stick to start the fire, etc. That’s cool and fun and all, but gosh - camping is just being outside, maybe sleeping there, cooking some food, whatever. It doesn’t require a special wardrobe and it can be done with some blankets.

reminded me of a time when my cousin got a new bag and we wanted to go snow camping to test it out. We got a late start and didn't get to the base of the mountain until after dark. We bought two bushels of wood from the local grocery store... (something we'd never normally do)... and made our way up the icy mountain roads in my Scirocco. T he roads were pretty awful, but we persevered until we found a pullout. We hiked in about a quarter mile... and realized we had forgotten the tent. Whoops. But not to be disuaded, we dug into the snow, put our pads down and got on making the fire. Trouble was that the town where we purchased the wood was below the snow line, so instead of fluffly powdery flakes, they got rain. All of our wood was soaked to the bone. So we hunkered down in a cold, winter camp with no tent. Fortunately our bags did what they advertised and we slept great until we were woken by a search and rescue guy. Apparently we arrived so late that we never knew there was a check point at the base of the mountain... a place where they would have told us that there was no camping allowed. So when the Rangers were doing their morning check they saw my car and thought it was cross country skiers who had gotten in some sort of trouble. Fortunately, the radio guy gave us a head start before he radioed that he'd found us. We slid down that mountain and booked on home. One of the more memorable trips I've been on.

Going from a 4 bedroom home, to being not so comfortable, I ended up homeless for about 3 months. I had a car, and that's where I slept, but finding a place to eliminate, etc., was difficult. You have given me so many ideas about surviving in the wilderness, and I wanted to thank you. I have my twig stove, lighting materials and tarps, etc. And that Dakota fire hole I knew about but you made it look so easy, and now I know how to make one. I think I could make it if I had to do it again, only this time I'm going to the woods, police can't find you there, and are too lazy to look, thank goodness. I love your videos.

that's actually a sure fire way to die. Alcohol interferes with your body's natural "oh shit im too cold WAKE UP!" and you could quite literally sleep to death. If your not drunk or in very poor health, 99x out of 100 you will wake up when you are too cold so that you can move around, or do something to warm up.
@Legohaiden

oh its also a system depressant, so it would actually make the cold much worse because it slows your heart down, thus killing you quicker... forgot to add that.

Stands there by the bonfire and looks at me and says "that's how".

I recently found this channel and I love all of the weird cold camping scenarios. Camping in a u-Haul van, camping in a hot tent in your backyard, camping in summer gear, etc. This is great stuff. I've never camped in the cold, I've been cold while camping but that was always unusually cold nights during the summer. Cold weather camping seems like an awesome thing to try. I'm not sure why it's not a more common thing. I would love to do it sometime.

It's incredibly fun, speaking as someone who has done 500+ nights of tent/tarp/shelterless camping in warmer months. Preparation and knowledge is necessary for a good time, but the feeling of "beating" the cold weather can make the most mundane camping experience tons of fun. Amazing to think our ancestors had to deal with the cold like that all the time. Tough cookies for sure.
