Real hacker: use TMPE to increase the capacity of the noob roundabout to be the same as the hacker roundabout

what's missing? TMPE and removing intersections. You can see the cars stopping at each merge, even though there is no possibility of anything interrupting the merge. Another thing to do is to change the merge from 2+1 to 1+1, so the roundabout goes from 2 lanes, splits to 1 lane after you can exit, then goes back to 2 lanes. Helps with the merging.

I'd optimize the last example even more: Build a straight bridge from west to east and a tunnel from north to south. That way ALL express directions can travel the shortest and most direct direction without interfering others.

Using mods doesn't make you a hacker and your best version still doesn't have good traffic flow.

It can be improved with a two-way tunnel below the roundabout, so you do not have to go through it and get out on the other side quickly.

Nice video! I actually made an experiment in one of my videos in which I test just how many roundabouts can a particular neighborhood sustain. There is a `soft` limit on how many roundabouts are efficient in traffic management. The rest comes down to area/neighborhood size and proper links to the main highway.

Two words: roundabout mod. It can handle the lanes and yield signs for you.

So in order to be on the level of "pro" and "hacker" I need to download mods. Genius.

The real key to good traffic flow is proper lane and intersection management. The main issue I see in your roundabouts, which exists in all 3 of them is bad lane management, which is going to happen in vanilla C:S as the default behavior always causes traffic to get in each other's way, and bottleneck themselves on a single lane, even when there are empty lanes right beside them they could use. Use TMPE mod to get better lane and intersection tools to manage traffic flow. A roundabout should have the outside lane be for exiting only, inner lanes for continuing around. The roundabout should always have right of way, so all inbound lanes/roads mush yield to the roundabout traffic. Traffic in the roundabout should be set to pass through the intersections without stopping. Do this and the "noob" roundabout will flow better then the "hacker" roundabout. For a very busy roundabout with a lot of traffic crossing over to the opposite side, you can add a bypass lane, but keep the intersection as far back as you reasonably can from the roundabout so it doesn't jam up traffic flow. Good lane management here can also includes reducing the road by 1 lane where the bypass road exits, and adding that lane back where it re-enters. Even in vanilla with no mods, that will force the game to give the desired lane behaviour (curb lane will be for turning only. All other lanes should be set to streight, and where the bypass merges back in, set the lane to force the merging traffic to use the re-introduced lane, so the cars don't get in each other's way with crazy lane switching behaviour. Avoid multi direction lanes at intersections whenever possible, it just confuses the pathfinding AI and bottlenecks all traffic into one lane and they all get in each other's way.

This was fun! Don't forget Elektrix's Roundabout Maker mod! It totally rules. Addendum: a "hacker" roundabout is not required in every situation, just those high-volume nightmares where the rest of the road planning hasn't been done properly. ;) Use "highway" roads in the circle so that the average speed is higher and you get fewer pedestrians to start with. After that, use TM:PE to remove lights and institute yields at conflicts. And what's with decorating with those horrid vanilla trees? Yeesh. MrMaison and pdelmo for the win! With a nice statue or monument and Prop Line Tool circles of flowers and a proper fence. 👍 There, I fixed it for ya.

These isuses could be solved by having better lane management.

The only thing that mattered functionally was the use of TM:PE. The noob one could have had the flow of the hacker one easily. Of course, looks matter too.

I'd love to see Noob/Pro/Modder builds of a continuous-flow intersection. Those things are total miracle-workers in my city!

In both the noob and pro there is no stop sign setup. You can do this even in vanilla using the menu on the left. Setting stop signs for the cars coming into the roundabout and removing them for the cars inside it will increase throughput significantly

Well using mods can also make the first roundabout have excellent traffic flow. I saw the cars stopping within the circle. Do all these things without using any mod. This would be nice to see if this works. Thank you anyways for sharing this.

I would have done the hacker roundabout, with extra lanes that went ether underground or overground, to bypass the roundabout so traffic that was just wanting to go straight, would not have to go through the bypass. Even the hacker roundabout has problems and puts needless traffic into the roundabout bottle necking it.

The hacker roundabout can be enhanced further with some small tweaks. A lot of the tiny junctions in and out of the roundabout had lanes set manually for traffic to both directions, yet they still decided to stop here and there. TM:PE allows you to set it so that the cars enter a junction anyway even if they don’t have room to exit it (why reserve space in a junction where no one is going to drive in front of you?) and also the lanes inside the roundabout should be set a bit differently. Don’t allow people to go straight or take a turn from the same lane, this is a very common problem that causes traffic jams in the game. Setting the junction restrictions inside the roundabout would also increase traffic flow a bit. The lanes going out of the roundabout need more work too, like setting the lanes correctly and applying the same junction restrictions.

The problem isn't with roundabouts, they work well in real life, it's with the coding and implementation of them in the game...

(assuming we're using the traffic manager mod, which was used in the "hacker" roundabout) just lay it out like the "noob" one, but have the incoming lanes yeild and also set it so the internal lanes pass through. even higher traffic flow, with none of the unnecessary extra lanes

I mean, if you need high traffic flow, you might as well choose another intersection.

you forgot to use TMPE to change prority of roads. I.E making people going on to the roundabout give way and such.

could also increase hacker roundabout by creating a dedicated turning lane in the circle, so cars dont dive from the far left to exit the roundabout. also, let traffic enter the intersection after they exit, as they are stopping at a stop sign or something...

Right now for a standard suburban neighborhood that is the shape of a AA battery, I'm using small roundabouts in the front corners. A small oval about in the front center and back center. And a medium oval about in the dead center to regulate service vehicles. But for the capital city center or heavy traffic corridors, I'll use the third one shown. And for medium urban flow, or heavy suburban flow I'll use the second one shown. I usually use the first one for small urban flow or small to medium suburban flow.

C:S roundabouts works like USA 4-way STOPs. In World where roundabouts are common road constructions: - Simple rule - if you are on roundabout you go first. When you want to go into you wait. - Mid traffic with many possible paths - turbine roundabout - Heavy traffic with many possible paths and - turbine roundabout + traffic lights

Maybe Biffa can teach us a few lessons about roundabouts :)

I usually add park fences between round abouts for more decoration and real look

I start with the n00b circles and upgrade as needed. Often, they are fine. I usually prefer to avoid traffic circles if traffic gets bad if possible. I’m not sure I love the slip roads in the hacker one, but maybe it could work a bit smoother.

Your last mistake is not using all of TM:PE's tools. Reduce speed limits going into the junction and keep them reasonably higher going out.

Noob: Use roundabout. Hacker: Not use a roundabout since it is designed to slow traffic in the first place. Use an overpass instead to go left and go across. Repeat for the other 2 lanes. 1 lane goes surface level.

Who else was here just to see how the hacker made the round-a-bout? Because the hacker's looks sic. And also "best traffic flow". Yeah, more like its In Between Medium and Good.
