Danish and Swedish officials on Tuesday said two leaks had been identified on the Nord Stream 1 Russia-Europe gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The news came only hours after a similar development on its twin pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both conduits have become flash points in the escalating energy war that has sent gas prices rocketing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
What do we know so far?
Officials said a pressure drop was detected in the Nord Stream 1 undersea gas channel soon after a similar fall was detected in its sister pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both of Nord Stream 1's two lines are affected, while one of Nord Stream 2's pipelines showed a drop in pressure. Marine authorities identified a gas leak southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm as the likely cause of the issue affecting Nord Stream 2. Danish officials warned of a threat to shipping in the area and asked vessels to steer clear. Swedish authorities on Tuesday said there were two leaks on Nord Stream 1 - one in the Danish maritime economic zone and the other in the Swedish one. The two leaks were reported to be very close to one another. The German economy ministry said it was investigating the incident. "We currently do not know the reason for the drop in pressure," it said.
Blasts registered by Swedish seismologists
Seismologists from Sweden's National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT that powerful blasts had been registered in the areas of the gas leaks on Monday. "There is no doubt that these were explosions," SNSN seismologist Bjorn Lund told SVT. Denmark's armed forces meanwhile released footage showing bubbles on the surface of the Baltic Sea above the Nordstream 1 and 2 pipelines and reported that the largest of the leaks had caused surface disturbance of around 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter.
What's the significance?
Both of the pipelines were built to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe, although the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was never activated. German officials have not yet provided any information on the possible cause of the damage. However, Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper cited German security circles saying that sabotage was strongly suspected. "Our imagination no longer allows for a scenario in which this is not a targeted attack," the newspaper quoted its source as saying. Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it was "hard to imagine" that the leaks were "accidental."
Speaking to Danish media while on a visit to Poland, Frederiksen said: "It's an unusual situation, to have three leaks a distance from each other. That's why it's hard to imagine that it's accidental." Ukraine blamed the leaks on Moscow.

On October 14 of the same year, the group blew up an underwater pipeline in the port of Puerto Sandino. The following year, the sea waters of this free country were mined, as a result of which a number of ships were blown up by mines. Gas moves at fairly high volume at low pressure and if a sudden high pressure event happens on or near the pipe like an explosion its logical to assume there would be check valves in numerous spots along the path of a pipeline that would open to protect the rest of the pipeline downstream. The leak kinda proves there was gas in the line unless its just air. Ukraine and US are the most of all interested in closing Nord Stream. Because the only gas pipeline is going now through ukrainian territory. And US will make a huge profit selling its LPG to Europe. Ukraine itself is not able to blow up the pipe. Therefore, the British or US could do it. It is only my assumption though. Russia could not do it, what for? WHY DOESN'T ANYONE HERE SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THAT THE PIPES WERE NOT IN USE. THIS WILL NOT AFFECT SUPPLY. This is Russia trying to scare people who think that this will be a problem for the EU, because they don't realize that these pipes were not in use, and would never have come back into use (nobody is going to be buying gas from Russia in the future). @@graveperil2169 Correct. The German Green coalition is OK for now but the seeds of dissent are already there. Now winter is coming the calls from German industry to switch the gas from NS back on are getting louder. Strategically it makes zero sense for Russia to sabotage the state monopoly's own export pipeline, because they have the ability to switch off the turbines, which they already did. It's about not allowing the pressure to build up from within Germany. America sanctioned everyone for building NS2. When Germany signed the deal with Russia to buy in euros was the moment the USA couldn't allow it to go ahead because it bypasses the petrodollar system. If Germany don't need to keep buying US Treasury bonds for energy supply - no country would and at that point the ability to control already severe inflation in the States is finished, along with the US dollar global currency reserve. It's that serious. Biden even said they will never allow supply of gas from Russia ... but the kicker was that is was denominated in euros not dollars.

Here's my 2 cents: Many people claim that Russia sabotaged the pipeline, but that makes little sense because Russia mainly benefits from an intact pipeline. Russia already controls the gas flow, if they want to cut Europe off they can just simply close the valve. And that's why I think the West has something to do with this..... Europe's gas supply from Russia is already stretched thin and now the days are slowly getting colder, the demand for gas will increase up to a point that shortages may even cause uprisings through Europe this winter. With the broken pipelines, Russia has no means to increase the gas supply to Europe and ease the situation, thus Russia has its position at the negotiation table severely weakened because they can not pressure European governments into making concessions to have the gas supply restored. Europe now knows where it stands: there will be a limited supply of gas this winter, but Russia has lost its leverage and even if there will be uprisings about the gas supply/prices, governments can now simply explain that the supply line is damaged instead of being pressured into negotiating with Russia. Time will tell if this was a smart move, but the Rubicon has been crossed now.... -"Alea iacta est"

This is your brain on "America Bad". European countries could have repurposed the whole pipe network by decoupling it from Russia, and installing pumps to change the flow direction. It feasibly could have allowed countries with LNG facilities to pump re-gassified LNG to other countries, without the recipient countries needing to invest in facilities or pressure tankers of thier own. To me, this smells like the petty b**ch nature of Russia saying "If I can't get what I want, neither can you!".

1 or 2 leaks could be written off as a natural burst, dozens of leaks could be written off as a massive structural failure of the pipes, but 3 leaks is suspicious as humans tend to operate on rules of 3. Edit: recently learned that these pipes are encased in concrete and Norway registered a 2.2 seismic burst on the Richter scale around the time of the pipe failure. If Russian gas was shut off then the pressure in the pipe would not have increased but rather decreased, if what was left in the pipes was being siphoned the closest thing that would have happened was an implosion but that wouldn't have left 3 holes.

No more cheap russian gas for german manufacturers and other consumers. But US will "help" with american liquefied natural gas at high cost. As a result, we will see higher inflation for all people in Germany and manufactures who loses their market share due to higher operational costs. And no more revenue for russian gas producers. Intresting. I used to think that it is war only against Russia. But looks like that things are complicated bit more.

September 4th 2022, German businessman, Karl Peter Griesemann’s private jet crashed into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia, having flown halfway across Europe from Spain whilst unresponsive to ATC calls, killing all on board. Flight tracking data showed that the Austrian registered Cessna 551 departed from southern Spain on Sunday afternoon, changed course at Paris and Cologne and then flew straight out to the Baltic Sea, before descending rapidly. The Griesemann Group was responsible for the maintenance of the Nordstream gas lines.

If this was Russia Id be interested as to what their motivation was. It makes it harder to get gas sails to Europe going again and that is ultimately what they would want. They are hoping that Europe caves in and says we want the gas and will drop sanctions. Now there is an extra barrier to that happening from Russias point of view. I wonder if it is more likely that this was done by a party wanting to make sure that Europe cant cave in and start buying gas from Russia again. Thoughts anyone?

I want to make some points if I may 1: it doesnt make sense for Russia to sabotage those pipelines because they can just shut down gas from the source. 2: many leaks at once it's very unlikely to be a coincidence, and only a state can do such an underwater operation. (Special underwater operation :)) 3: The consequence of this will be that in the winter some european countries will be less able to negotiate more gas from Putin in exchange for less sanctions for example. 4: I dont want to point any fingers but I have a strong suspicion about which country has economical and strategic advantage out of this event, and the capability to do so. 5: well done!
