Western weapons such as HIMARS and TB2 attack drones have dominated the headlines in the Russia-Ukraine war. However, experts believe it’s the older weapons, mainly Soviet-era designs, that are doing much of the fighting. Rob Lee, a US defence expert, says that Ukraine's older systems have effectively stopped the Russian onslaught to a large extent. Watch the video find out more about these old Soviet weapons.

The fact that Ukraine is doing so well even with the soviet era equipment shows that there is nothing wrong with the arsenal that Russia is using against Ukraine. It's the incompetence and a lack of co-ordination in the Russian army that is leading to their downfall..

it makes sense if both sides use the same weapons, one of them keeps the weapons maintained with skilled, competent and motivated operators fighting for their nation's survival that side has a big advantage even where the other side has more of the same kit but has no value in maintenance of the kit or training the operators especially when the operators know they are being fed a lot of lies by an egotistic despot and are fighting to please his hubris.

Not entirely true - Military Ukrainian lads tell me that critical during the first 10 days of the war were the 2,000 NLAW & 30 instructors "gifted" to the Ukraine and mostly deployed around Kyiv that blunted the Russian spear head and decimated the 83 vehicle Chechen assassin convoy sent to murder the government - It was the bold and very Lethal Aid 2,000 that started the cascade effect of weapons.

@@anniecameron6794 Yes, the Ukrainians have only re-captured their own land in the latest battles. Also, over 99% of the damage to buildings and infrastructure has occurred in Ukraine so far. So in those ways Russia's winning, just as you say. But Russia's sending many thousands of men to die, and much equipment to be destroyed, on that captured land, and the sanctions and turmoil within Russia seem to be very, very, real. Many of Russia's best people have left and will never come back -- following in the footsteps of fleeing foreign investors and Russia's world reputation. I don't see how Russia will earn a profit from this disastrous misadventure even if they keep the stolen land they have left.

Since the two sides in this conflict are using almost the same equipment it seems logical then that the Ukrainian successes on the battle field can be attributed to 1) first and foremost the bravery and sacrifice of the Ukrainian soldiers who selflessly put it all on the line for their country! 2) second the adoption of less centralized and more western tactics whereby regional field officers are given sufficient autonomy to take the initiative and press the offensive against Russian forces without fear of reprisals from their superiors. I think we can assume the western training alongside NATO forces of both the Ukrainian army and air force during the last 10 years played a role here. 3) thirdly the motivation of Ukrainian forces cannot be overstated. Putin's greatest miscalculation is underestimating the willingness of the Ukrainians to fight and die for their country. Whatever else you might think about Democracies they are capable of fielding very large and motivated armies. It was true of the Athenians during the battle at Marathon and Salamis and it is true of the Ukrainians now! Would be autocrats in the future would do well to take note that while democracies may be messy and appear fractured and disorganized. When they are attacked from without they respond swiftly and violently!

Russian military equipment is some of the best in the world. You see that because Ukraine is kicking some ass with Russian equipment. The problem is when you have poorly trained staff who do not know how to properly use the equipment. Also some of the tactics are appalling like for example sending tanks in naked with no ground units making them easy for ambushes. Like I said Russia makes some of the best military equipment in the world there is no denying that. But the equipment is only as good as their crew utilizing it.

@laszlokaestner5766
@laszlokaestner5766 Рік тому
While much of the equipment started off basically the same it should be pointed out that Ukraine was the centre for much of the Soviet military industrial complex. As a result the Ukrainians have been able to update and maintain their weapons in much better conditions than the Russians have (before we even get to corruption which has been a problem for both but now appears endemic in Russia). There is no way that a Russian T-62 pulled from storage in Siberia is even on the same page as a modernized and upgraded Ukrainian T-62. Same with S-300 and BUK and the SU's.
@maurvir3197
@maurvir3197 Рік тому
Ukraine has demonstrated the force multiplication power of ingenuity and high morale, and how that can often transcend the actual equipment used. Though, in fairness, Soviet era hardware wasn't at all "bad", and many Soviet-era systems and vehicles were just as good, or in some cases better, than western equivalents. No one is doubting the actual hardware. What is lacking is the same discipline and adherence to good tactics that Ukraine is showing. Where Russia is screwing up is in dragging this out long enough to allow Ukraine to slowly transition to more modern, western equipment. When this is over, Ukraine will have leapfrogged from Soviet era gear cleanly, and their soldiers will have a much better understanding of the new equipment in the field. Russia may carve off a good chunk of southern Ukraine, but what is left is going to much, much more rapidly align with the west, both politically and militarily, ultimately doing exactly what Putin wanted to prevent.
@cacwgm
@cacwgm Рік тому
Good to highlight the effectiveness of Soviet-era weapons in Ukrainian hands - it can be overlooked. It highlights the huge differences in training and competence between the armed forces of the two countries. A couple of points to make: In 2014, both Russia and Ukraine had the same military doctrine, and similar training philosophies. However, a number of countries (notably, Canada, the US and the UK) provided strategic advice and extensive hands-on training in NATO-standard leadership, battlefield doctrine and tactics, logistics and weapons handling. By the time Russia invaded again, in February 2022, Ukraine could no longer be said to be a primarily Soviet doctrine-led armed force (unlike Russia) - it had undergone an 8-year transformation. Most importantly, a generation of NCOs and junior officers had gone through NATO-standard leadership training, and risen through the ranks. In the two months to 24th February 2022, the UK had rushed several thousand ATGMs, and trained hundreds of Ukrainians to train their comrades in arms on them. This was the most dramatic and visible supply effort, but arms have been flowing into Ukraine for years, so not 100% accurate to say that NATO members only started sending arms to Ukraine after the February invasion.

@t.j.mcfadden7993 Рік тому

Ukraine war machine is diverse in era, technology, tactics, approaches and mindsets. Russia can't compete in a war that is being fought in multiple hardware time periods. The arsenal of tactics, strategies and plans for Ukraine are immense. Russians fights like Russians. yes they are capable as Russians. But the war turned into a multi cultural junction of different mindsets working for one cause, the liberation of Ukraine. That type of opposition is way too capable moreover when the team defending has accurate satellite information ALL THE TIME. Let us remember one fact. Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is defending. What is with the winter comments? Humanity lived when there was no central heating whatsoever. Also, there is something called Global warming. The planet is getting so warm that even the poles are melting at unprecedent rate. The winter will never be as cold as before due to the whole planet heating up. :/

Hey man, observing the war in Ukraine from the past 6 months I have concluded that the United States of America is a great military and economic superpower. They have obliterated Kremlin's unprofessional forces without even having boots on ground. Due to Kremlin's fascism Russian civilians are deprived from tasty food outlets like McDonald's, KFC, Starbucks, Pizza Hut and Taco bell. Nevertheless, I enjoy a McDonald's burger 🍔 with a Starbucks coffee 😋😋

Their unequivocal support for Kremlin's brutal assault on Ukraine demonstates their inability to afford good quality education. I guess this is one sided love. Oh- also NATO intelligence-where ammo dumps are- where command posts are where Russian military leadership is where the MOSCOW was when is an AMMO DUMP full to bursting-yes NATO can follow Russian logistic train(literally the trains-from where it is stored to where it is delivered to front line dump) Literally tell Ukraine when it makes sense to unleash almost $1 MILLION in HIMARS( $125,000. each)-on a dump $1,000,000 in ammunition stored near to the artillery is worth a LOT more than the 1 million it costs to produce-so worth many many millions-making 6 HIMARS good dollars and cents/sense.

Its getting annoying when videos like these seem to imply that ukrainians wohkd had dome kind of difficulty in adapting to more modern western made weaponry. Reality has shown how fast the ukranians learn how to use them and use them effectivery with imaginative new tactics. All this talk of "ukraine eould face difficulty to adapt to modern weapons" is nothing short of pedantry and snobbism. Its insulting to the ukranian people who have shown great intelligence and resourcefulness in the conducting of this war.

If Ukraine can "modernize [ 3:05 + ] the Soviet Kh-35 anti-ship missile" then it must have a few of them. Might be a good time to get in under the bridge repair boats and take out those bridge columns Russia conveniently left intact when they false flag attacked the bridge with superficial damage; using these Kh-35s.

Ukrainian forces are still using those Soviet era Military hardware and equipment because Some or most of these piece Military hardware and equipment from the former Soviet Block such as Poland 🇵🇱 Czekh Republic, Slovakia 🇸🇰 Bulgaria 🇧🇬 and the rest from the Former Soviet republics of 3 Baltic states such as 🇱🇹, Estonia 🇪🇪 and 🇱🇻. So won't be surprised where Ukraine 🇺🇦 have more Soviet era Military hardware and equipment came from .

This is what people forget, the older equipment the Ukrainians have. Some of it has been improved on, tanks and BTR’s. Although it never made it into full production the Ukrainian modified BTR laughs at the Russian version. But perhaps the best example of Ukrainians using older stuff. There’s combat footage of a MIG 24, an old Soviet bomber streaking across the ground at around 100 ft. These aircraft have been stored outside for 30 years, many of them useless, the Russians destroyed them in the first few days of the war. People involved in aviation only have praise for the Ukrainian pilots who fly a plane that probably hasn’t actually flown in over ten years and where did they keep it? In a time of need you got to use what you got. The Ukrainian Air Force was said to be done, kaput, finished but now not so much. American trained ‘Moonfish l’ and ‘Juice’ are proof of that, I think Moonfish is gone (RIP) SLAVA UKRAINE 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Ukraine asks for weapons from other countries to help fight a belligerent invader. They don't have enough Soviet era weapons to fight Russia without additional support. I know Ukraine is good, but they're not that good that they can inflict this much damage on the Russian invader without touching their own arsenal. But you know that - you're just acting thick.

Russia and Ukraine are both Republic of Soviet Union, hence Russia don't have any rights to say that Ukraine belong to them. Because in the first place Ukraine is only member of Soviet Union but never been a part of Russia since the Russian revolution began.
