@@acidrain9924 And low adoption rate is a a good argument against use case how? With Microsoft's terrible showcase of Windows 11 as well as the hardware restrictions, coupled with even more baked in telemetry... Many will consider the freedom, security and customizability of Linux. It worked wonders for university work and with Steam and Proton picking up tons of speed, even gaming is a total non-issue, to me at least. Many will follow for sure, if willing to do minimal research to liberate themselves.

whydoyouaskdude “Many” isn’t even 5% of the global market, and because of the low adoption rate linux will at the end of the day lack hardware support and features. And most universities still requires you to use basic applications like Word, Excel etc, if you r graphic designer you need Photoshop, if you r a 3d Modeler a big big majority of Universities starts with Autodesk Products such as blender Proton and Wine are nice tools, but they r not perfect, yeah with time they will get better and better but they will never be perfect

@@acidrain9924 Anything can be done on Window, can also be done on Linux. Microsoft Words and Doc for example, we got Libre suite for that. Or just open up browser and use google doc/sheet/whatever. Blender runs on Linux so not a big issue. Adobe, there's plenty alternative. Like Gimp, darktables, or davinci which for me is MARVELOUS and helped me alot. If you want to run another OS for example, you can just use linux as a kernel and hijack your hardware to run that OS. Since it's a kernel based vm, it run almost if not, at native speed. Gaming however, I don't know much but proton and wine served me quite well. Reason for using Linux for me is to learn. And to save cost to some extend. It helped me understand the basics of Linux during my time in university for my RHEL certificate. And I don't need to pay monthly for service such as adobe or sony vegas and what not. And it's free and you can customize the hell out of it, or you can just, use the terminal without installing any DE or WM.

Danial's Comment You are talking about yourself, “You” don’t represent every use case, there are schools, text books, government and private sector, all relying on windows and Microsoft suite Gimp isn’t as near as Photoshop or affinity, libre isn’t as straightforward and compatible with other doc types The truth is until linux gets professional suite of software like adobe, Autodesk, Microsoft. Linux’s market share will always be negligible

Nvidia & ARM have a great opportunity to do this very right & absolutely shake up the game by shipping devices with Linux, giving them greater control over software. A gaming Chromebook held down by a Linux VM doesn't sound great, whereas a bare metal Linux on ARM experience would truly deliver (especially with Valve's increased effort with Proton)

I wonder how they got this to work... Does the MediaTek SoC have a complete PCIe block (i.e. one that can generate IO space packets - most PCIe blocks in ARM SoC do not have this capability, which includes the Raspberry Pi). Or were the drivers re-written to not require an IO space initialization (is that even possible?). Or was the firmware on the GPU changed to not require IO space initialization. My guess is that it's the first option - the MediaTek SoC has a PCIe block that looks more like something you would expect on an x86 CPU/SoC. (The other options would probably violate backward compatibility with x86 - i.e. the card / drivers would ONLY work with ARM SoCs).

That sounds awesome - not only could it mean a bit more of an audience for Linux Gaming, which I'm all for, but also these ARM-Processors have a MUCH LOWER power draw than current Desktop CPUs have. Of course, it that is due to their lower amount of hardwired processing commands, but maybe it's time to get rid of "overhead" there - I think for that matter, Apple's Silicone APUs really did make an awesome point - also thinking in terms of sustainability and power use reduction instead of increase (as with most GPUs still the case sadly). I wonder if there could be new processing methods/commands implemented into GPUs, too, though, that would allow to even "emulate" older commands, if necessary at fast enough speeds to allow to drop their complexity, too (since Apple Silicone can emulate via Rosetta 2 X86 fairly well / well enough, i.m.h.o. while still drawing less power by a significant factor). So, we have the Technology to probably save our Civilization if we can get resource cycles (recycling) put into place properly by incentives and/or regulations, too - so none of them go to waste anymore instead of so many, that they become a hazard to Nature (as it is up to now still the case). I'm really excited about the possibilities these developments introduce on a grand scale as "pieces of a puzzle" we need to get sh*t done... Cheers and thanks for this inspiring video about part of these developments...

The only problem I'd have with an ARM-based gaming desktop PC is compatibility. Proton is a thing, and there's other avenues of software emulation out there, but none of it is or ever will be perfect, and if switching to a new architecture for my PC build means losing the use of all or even a chunk of my game library, that's not gonna be fun. These concerns aside though, I agree with everyone else that these are exciting times, and I'm looking forward to what else can be accomplished with ARM, especially in the gaming sphere.

Nothing surprising here - Wolfenstein Youngblood is already both on Nintendo Switch and Stadia so all of the tools are there. Pairing it with MediaTek - nothing out of the ordinary though not what would come first to mind. I can't be really happy about "RTX is the way to do Ray tracing" marketing push. A bit blatant attempt to create association of what ARM will be able to do once Nvidia's acquisition is over (hint - those two things are completely unrelated). Looking at the Nvidia blog, the GPU is RTX 3060. I can't find the bandwidth specs of the PCIe on the Mediatek SoC - that could've been one of the defining factors explaining the choice of GPU to pair. From all that we have a good ad and we know Nvidia is good in this department. Unrelated, why no links to sources?

This is nvidias masterplan to beat AMD. Arm processors are in most portable devices these days. This is great for them as AMD is used in a lot of non pc devices like consoles and even the upcoming steam deck. If you remove the need for x86 cpus then AMDs cpu market will dry up.
@blalien777

Who wants to bet Nvidia will bring out a steam deck competitor in about 1yr pending the arm aquisition?!

The main reason that I became pro-ARM in the CPU space was because the licensing model, where as x86 is limited to only a few companies (primarily Intel & AMD). I think that ARM is great for competition, but I fear that if Nvidia acquire ARM, then those selling points of ARM may slowly disappear if Nvidia decide to become anti-competitive. Nvidia's history on Linux support has been poor in some respects compared to ATI (AMD) and the ARM ecosystem has so far been very Linux friendly and I wouldn't want to see that being disrupted by Nvidia. So I hope that ARM doesn't get bought out by Nvidia for these reasons amongst others. But I do welcome Nvidia taking steps to reduce dependence on x86 by working on this Linux, ARM, Nvidia combo. I hope that Nvidia becomes more of a bigger supporter of the Linux ecosystem and stops this attitude of lowering the quality of their Linux drivers due to fear of competitors seeing their driver code.
@dial2616
@dial2616 2 роки тому
x86 doesn't have any licensing, the amd64 patent expired in 2019, allowing any company to manufacture their own CPU with the instruction set.

Nvidia collaborating with Valve to bring DLSS and RTX to Linux using Proton, Valve then releasing an all AMD device running Linux, and then Nvidia showing their power in Linux on a ARM CPU, just a theory, but, this might be some contingency plan about some dark stuff that Microsoft is planning to do with Windows 🤔

@@GaryExplains yeah, I know, but why those companies are focusing their efforts in Linux, rather than Windows, I mean I love Linux and I wanna get rid of Windows in my life for good, but why those companies are so interested in work with Linux now?

Because they have direct access to the Linux source code and can develop or create whatever they want. They can't do that with Windows.
@josegarita2718

@@GaryExplains they are not trying to do something new, they are trying to make Windows games to work in Linux, they have access to the source code, however you are right, Valve will never consider to launch a Windows based Deck because they cannot modify the way that Windows behaves and they wanted to make it feel like a console

-Microsoft have been pushing ARM technology with their custom Qualcomm SQ1 chip and been working hard on Windows on ARM. -Intel coming with what we can call as big.LITTLE config on their upcoming CPU to further push the envelopes of both performance and efficiency of the x86 machine. -Apple came out with the most powerful ARM based SoC yet to be beaten which shut all the naysayer saying that ARM is poor at scalibility -Nvidia come with a promising future with what we can expect as a full flesh working PC on both Windows or Linux on ARM based CPU. No longer Intel or AMD exclusive (wish the part is modular). -Valve coming with semi-custom AMD based x86 machine in a custom Linux OS to gain back the crown of a hand held gaming machine from an ARM based hand held gaming machine. And it's a fully working PC! what an era to live seeing the battle to the crown of an x86 vs ARM machine.
