** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
[Simon recorded this video on his laptop and we're aware that the video quality drops in the last 15 minutes. Apologies. It would have been awful to have to junk it given the quality of the puzzle. Things should be back to normal tomorrow.]
Happy Birthday ThePedallingPianist - who returns to the channel with an absolutely extraordinary sudoku tonight called Killer Octopus. It is absolutely remarkable that this has a unique solution and the logic is extremely original. He shouldn't really be giving us presents on his birthday but it seems he has!
Play the puzzle at the link below:
sudokupad.app/d7siz7tehr
Or with added Octopus graphics:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/se...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a cage must sum to the given total. Octopus rules apply. I.e. draw 4 lines that must each: i) not cross or overlap anywhere except r5c5, where they all intersect; ii) have 180-degree rotational symmetry around r5c5; iii) visit exactly 2 cells on the edge of the grid, which are the beginning and end of the line; and iv) all be the same length (in number of cells passed through). The 4 lines are "Same Difference" lines. I.e pairs of adjacent digits on a line must all have the same difference, though this difference may be different for different lines.

I couldn't disagree more with people who are saying this shouldn't have been featured because of the unfortunate technical problems at the end. This is such a brilliant puzzle that it would have been tragic not to show it, especially considering that the majority of important and awesome deductions were clear and unaffected, and really only the end 'cleanup and sudoku' part was hard to follow. Let's remember that CTC have put out 2 vids a day for 4 years, and very rarely, if at all, has there been any problem with video quality. Congrats (and happy birthday) again Stu - a much deserved feature of this masterful construction. And Simon, fantastically solved and explained as usual - thanks for taking some time out of your holiday to record this :)

Thank you for this wonderful birthday treat, I'm very flattered and grateful that you took time out of your holiday to record this! The solve was very smooth and hit all the right points in all the right places, though you could have used the 5-cage a little earlier to help avoid some of the notation agony! This is the second puzzle I made with "octopus rules", and I'd love for it to be normalised because there's so much potential and fun to be explored with it. In fact, Marty Sears made me a birthday puzzle using octopus rules (though he words it much more cleanly!) that is, naturally, brilliant! I was very lucky that the puzzle just seemed to fall into place as soon as I had the ruleset and some ideas about how certain cages could be particularly potent and how to break the symmetry. But this was actually to the puzzle's detriment as there tends to be a positive correlation between the amount of effort and struggle that I put into setting a puzzle and the amount I promote it to solvers and content creators! I've been absolutely spoilt by the sudoku community today - shout out to Ratfinkz, Laake and my dad as well as Marty for making personalised puzzles for me that I've been solving on Twitch this evening! And thanks again to you, CTC, and to all the lovely commenters for making my evening extra special. What a wonderful community we have :)

39:01. When you realize the 258 line and the 159 line both need five 5s, it makes for a quicker puzzle as you already know that all your 5s were used for these two lines. Thinking about parity is probably the harder part of this puzzle, even compared to realizing all but the central 5 are located in the Phistomofel ring.

39:50 Not quite accurate to say the 11 cell line has more 5s than the 9 cell line; since the 9 cell line had 5s at the end, adding another cell at either end actually adds two more 1/9s or 2/8s. It's at length 13 that you get another pair of 5s...
@CauchyIntegralFormula
@CauchyIntegralFormula 8 днів тому
20m09s. That was cute!!! Figuring out how the four difference lines functioned was a treat, as was the realization (thankfully early on) that the 5's on the large difference lines forced a lot of things
@toms7114
@toms7114 9 днів тому
Once I noticed there were 4 5s in the Phistomefel Ring that there had to be 4 5s in the outer 4 cell square corners of the grid. Since the lines that had 5s on them could only have two cells from an edge of a 3x3 square before having the sole 5 in that square. Thus the 5 cage meant that the octopus was leaning down on the right side with the red line passing through the 14 cage above the 5 cage and ending on the top 5 of square 9. I had been saying this to Simon for a good 20 minutes before he noticed. This is one of the rare occasions where I see something before Simon does, and can explain it logically.

Finished in 43:02. I had solved the octopus parts pretty easily, but spent almost 20 minutes trying to figure out what the sudoku was, but was getting stuck and not figuring out how to solve the actual sudoku. But then I realized that I hadn't finished one leg of the octopus and thus was trying to solve the sudoku with not enough information. Lesson to be learned, finish all your octopus legs! Fun puzzle!

Done in a mere 22:25. I noticed early that that the 3 and 4 diff lines took not only the 4 5s in the ring, but 4 more to reach the edge. This forced 1 of only 2 possible (reflected) distributions of 5s, which the 5 cage immediately disambiguated.

My brain must be on holiday mode too because despite immediately knowing how box 5 must be arranged, I still had it in my head that the lines could only move orthogonally thereafter. 11:30 I was thinking of this as "On each line, we have an arithmetic sequence with the middle digit going in the central square of the puzzle; therefore, in box 5, each line has one digit below the central square and one digit above the central square, and none of these digits overlap between lines. So the central digit of the puzzle is greater than four digits and less than four digits; hence, it's 5."

I finished in 110 minutes. This one was so tough tracking all the possibilities of the lines. I quickly figured out that they all cross straight through the center block, but beyond that it started to branch very quickly. I completely missed that lines could cut back towards the center, while making progress towards the outside. I thought I had broken it in box 9 cause my version of Simon's blue line couldn't connect to a 5, completely missing that it could go back up to a 9. This puzzle makes you pay attention. Great Puzzle!

46:50 - all the lines need to be the same length, so position of 9 is given right away, it needs to be on the edge, otherwise the line will be too long. Gets filled in 12 minutes later, poor nine.

Settings to check for overall audio quality on the laptop (sounds good enough to me, although Mark may disagree): beside the recording software that Simon surely checked, there might be non-obvious microphone settings (in OS parameters or vendor-specific software) such as "background noise removal". Those "enhancements" (add as many quotes as you like) often garble the sound much more than they enhance it (unless you are outdoor by a busy street on a windy day). In a quiet environment they can be turned off.

My immediate reasoning for a 5 in the middle: Use the secret! The total sum of all the entries on all the lines (counting the middle multiple times) must be 45 plus 3 times the middle digit. But each line segment is an arithmetic progression with the middle digit in the middle, so each of them sum to thrice the middle digit. 12 times the middle digit equaling 45 plus thrice the middle digit means middle digit is 5. Of course, "9 needs it to be at least 5, and 1 needs it to be at most 5" works too.

Solved it in 35:24. As soon as I knew the 4-diff and 3-diff lines had to use up all the 5's, I used Phistomefel and placed the 5's. Perhaps some would see that as playing a bit too fast and loose, but what can I say: I like to live dangerously.
@andremouss2536
@andremouss2536 6 днів тому
10:50 it's very simple : the rules imply that the sum of the three cells visited by each line in the central box is three times the value of the central cell. So this sum is the same for each line, and four times this sum is 45 plus three times the central cell. So the central cell (by a modular 4 argument) is 1, 5 or 9. But 1 and 5 are clearly impossible, so the central cell is 5 and the total is 15, the lines are 159 258 357 456.

This was a very interesting puzzle. I hope we see more puzzles where "Octopus rules apply." It could be interesting to pair Octopus Rules with German Whispers or Slow Thermos.

I got a long way into this puzzle having forgotten the rule about the arms all reaching the edge of the grid, then ground to a halt and spent another half an hour mostly getting nowhere before remembering. Serves me right!

Took me less than two seconds to put the 5 in the middle and recognize that the other digits had to be opposites for each line. The work the digit 5 did was amazing, as did the 5 sum cage in the bottom. I think that alone makes this puzzle stand out! Sad to say, I did have to peek at the video to get the start going as I didn't immediately recognize the importance of the ring, but from there the logic is very easy to see and once you see it, the puzzle just opens up like a present on Christmas! :)

The ruleset should read "which are the beginning and end of (each line) or (the lines) (plural) instead of the line (singular).

Spectacular puzzle! Also It's been quite a while since I've spent this much time stuck because I forgot a rule ("same length, you dolt!"🤦‍♂). I stared for ages unable to disambiguate the 1-difference line at the end.

41:33 finish. I missed one of the rules, the part about legs being of equal length. This, plus a single missed piece of logic, led me off on a 15 minute tangent to an ALMOST solve, but hit a deadly pattern right at the end. Fortunately I was able to rewind and push through (eventually). An excellent puzzle!

This outstanding masterpiece can be more easily solved using *placeholder digits* to simplify and improve your notation. I would not have been able to solve it without them. Simon's explanations would have been much easier for inexperienced viewers to understand. See my playlist for more information about this technique. In this case, you can start by placing *5* either in *r6c3* or *r6c7,* and then just ignore as long as you can the *5-cage* in box 9, which is the only available disambiguator. If you end up with a *5* in that cage, you know you need to switch to the alternative configuration. The transformation needed to switch from one configuration to the other is a *mirror reflection* with respect to *column 5* (i.e, for instance, *r9c2* becomes *r9c8* and viceversa). Of course, if you happen to choose the "correct" configuration, you can *easily* prove uniqueness by showing that the alternative one would be incompatible with the 5-cage. Never forget that placeholders are symbols (like letters). Each of them represents two candidates. They are not a guess❗ They represent *both* configurations at the same time. The final transformation is needed to switch from placeholder digits to real ones, not from a "wrong" configuration to a "correct" one.

By the way, this puzzle is stratospherically awesome, outstandingly beautiful and wildly innovative. Thank you *PedallingPianist* for designing it and thank you *Simon* for featuring it.

Bobbins alert, Simon is about to remember that all lines need to have the same length and end at the border so he already knows where the 9 and 1 go.

48:24 I think remember that all lines are the same length and all lines has to reach the end would have made things a bit easier. Nope, looks like Simon did not remember that but found some other way to make that deduction.

Quite the pretty puzzle. I was helped a lot by Simon's noting the fistemefel ring and parity rules. After that I had it quickly, but simon still struggled for a long time. Perhaps it'd been faster if Simon had drawn in a couple of possible octopuses and looked at what happens in each case?

The subtle change on sudokupad rules are interpreted that a total of only 2 cells of all the lines are to touch the edge, rather than 2 cells of each line. This really threw me off and had to watch Simon's video. Thanks for clarifying.

21:29 On one hand this seemed to be quite an easy one. On the other hand I completely messed it up and had to restart after ten minutes from making some foolish assumptions about symmetry without even realising it. My own folly aside, this was an excellent puzzle.

1:00:36 for me, but it wasn't very satisfying because I used some intuitive reasoning that I then didn't bother to prove. The 5 cage in box 9 forced a 5 into r8r9c9, and I intuitively recognized that the rules would force one of the lines to connect to that 5 in box 9, which could only be the red line. From there it was easy to see that the 5 would have to go in r8c9 and the red line would have to be the 2-8 line. I should have gone about proving this before using it to solve the puzzle, but I didn't because of how long I had already spent on the puzzle to reach that point. I just rolled with my intuition, and fortunately, it was correct.

Lovely puzzle :) 38:28 for me, somewhat hindered by repeatedly assuming that the line I'm currently looking at can only move orthogonally for no obvious reason; and scanning failures stretching the non-legs part of the puzzle to 20 minutes even after the legs were done. (Also, an octopus's legs are more like tongues than legs)
