The sad truth of the matter is that with society being how soft and easily offended it is today, if you laugh at something that is obviously offensive - and funny for that reason, then they'll think of you as a horrible person, especially if you're white. Minorities can get away with laughing because they're often the victims of the offense the joke is in reference to. So the person watching has to draw a line between not laughing out of respect and looking like "a good person," or laughing because it's funny.
