Do it yourself (DYI) oilskin tarp out of a King size Cotton bed sheet. This video goes over the steps I took to make the oilskin tarp and test it for water resistance. The oilskin tarp finished out to be roughly 8x9 and it weighed around 6lbs.

It worked, that is very cool. Appreciate the shout out and good luck on your deer hunt. I plan to get real serious about hunting next week. Have some orders to get out this week. Again, nice tarp and you have to love the weight vs size and durability of oil skin.

Brian Liles It was a fun project and I enjoyed using the tarp last winter but it did eventually fall apart I don't know if it was because I used an old sheet and the material was warn out or if the linseed oil ate the material or combination of both. Jason
@BrianLiles
@BrianLiles 8 років тому
Good to know, Jason. My guess is that it was the light weight of the material. Canvas is much heavier and durable. And a lot more expensive. When I do this project, I will keep the longevity (or lack thereof) of the finished product in mind. It will also be interesting to see if the harsh desert conditions in my area shorten the lifespan even further. Just curious, how long did your tarp last, and roughly how many uses did you get from it?

i make drop cloths doing this with minwax oil and no thinner. (takes 3 weeks to dry here in humid florida) Works great.Camo sheets look great too. Also can re--coat it if needed (thinned 50%).Im a furniture refinsher and if the truth be known ive never seen a difference in any of the oils tho linseed is good because its all natural/non toxic, used on baby furniture alot,Thxs for upload!

yea adding some turpentine will really help it dry specially if it is not warm and dry weather. It will also make your tarp lighter, as will making a twin which I am about to do for a hiking kit. If you make it too thin though you might have to do 2 coats, depending on your thread count I know 300 is not enough for 1 to 1 ratio. I might try 1to 1 on an 800 count but 2 parts oil and 1 part turpentine really does a good job on bags and pouches, and it is still pretty thin.

if you want grommets not tie outs you should really enforce the locations. grommets don't spread the force well and the back side of the tension will be very likely to tear of just like the cheap blue ones. Plus when you clamp them in place it cause a rub point around where the metal clamps to the fabric.

Jason.. Sweet.. gear made from oilskin awesome! I had never really thought about the bed sheet as a cotton source, but now it's got me thinking. Keep us up dated on the wear and waterproof aspects. I have heard of using a 50-50 mix of BLSO and MS but never tried it. It's supposed to dry faster but makes for a thinner coating. I have used a mix of BLSO, paraffin, and beeswax that works quite well. Thanks for he video.. Shad

Thanks for the vid, not many on this subject. I've been learning oilskinning over the last ten years, with a lot of trial and error. It's an artform, and takes a good eye for materials and ingredients. A lot can go wrong. It often happens oiling ruins an item, be it through increased bulk, rigidity, and increased tendency to tear. They simply become unusable. My most successfully items have been thin, lightweight nylon, thin sport-style synthetic sweaters, and lightweight blends of cotton of no more than 50% - like dickies pants. Cotton always needs reinforcement stitching, double layers, and a lot of work to prevent tears. Joints in clothing wear out rapidly, and tears run a long way in the stiffer fabric. Items shrink, the material can become like sandpaper, and the bulk/weight can increase dramatically. Starting with a synthetic reduces all of those concerns. For natural fibers, mold will set in without consideration, and the addition of bees wax and pine sap almost necessary. Both protect against decay, add suppleness, smell natural and increase the shine. If I can't get either, I'll smoke the item not unlike an animal hide. I've had more failures than successes, and wasted a lot of supplies trying to figure out what works. When it does, the results are spectacular, unique, and draw a lot of attention. Everyone wants one, and wants to talk about it. Over the years, a few of my creations have truly been one of a kind, and priceless in form and function.

I would have mixed the boiled linseed oil in a 50/50 mix with mineral spirits. The mineral spirits acts as a drying agent and will let the linseed oil dry completely. Linseed oil by itself will never completely dry.

@another3997
@another3997 3 роки тому
This method is at least two hundred years old. Fish oil and linseed oil were used by by sailors and fishermen on sails, and later on clothing. It doesn't breath as well as Gortex or hydrophilic coatings. It's also smells more and tends to go yellow with age. These days the linseed oil tends to be mixed with wax and turpentine to stop this happening, and to avoid the long drying times. Unlike Gortex, the proofing can be reapplied once its waterproofing wears off. You can buy ready made oilcloth/waxed cotton.

In my experience, boiled linseed oil won't dry in humid climates and will become tacky/sticky if humidity remains high. We have difficulty with black mold taking root in oil-based paints, as well. Not sure if that's dust/pollen that has stuck to sticky paint, seems to be.

How is this oilcloth holding up? Curious about folds and snags. Also, about how much BLO was required to treat? I noted you were ready with 2 quarts, but I suspect you used much less.
@PrimalOutdoors
@PrimalOutdoors 9 років тому
themattclean Its holding up fairly well just used this weekend I had rain and hale plus gusting winds and I stayed nice and dry. I will be posting a video of the trip within the next couple of days. I used a little less than 2 quarts but I can't tell you exactly I just kept adding until the sheet was fully saturated. Jason

Very nice! I'd like something like this for canoe camping. My nylon tarp has a few pin holes from wayward sparks so a natural cloth would be much better. I got to ask though, how safe is the Linseed Oil? I've always been told to destroy Linseed soaked rags because of the risk of spontaneous combustion it presents. Though I must confess that numerous attempts to witness this have all failed. Dire warnings are always given where this oil is applied with rags. Perhaps it's only possible while the oil is still wet. Good video and nice tarp! All the best, Al.

@PrimalOutdoors 9 років тому
Knucker Once the linseed oil is completely dry it is safe the risk is when its still wet. I kept this tarp in a hot car all day folded up and checked it several times for heat and felt nothing. Of course do this kind of stuff at your own risk but so far I feel the tarp is plenty safe. Thanks for watching. Jason

Unlike some oils and coatings, linseed oil cures by oxidation, which produces heat. Left in a pile or container, the heat is insulated and can build up. A linseed oil soaked rag, if left to dry flat, like this tarp was, will never build up heat, as the heat dissipates immediately. Then once completely dry, it's very safe.

I have not tried this yet. I'm going to, though. Like you said, I think I'm gonna do a twin sheet...much more my speed. 6lbs. Sheesh! LOL.
@PrimalOutdoors
@PrimalOutdoors 9 років тому
briargoatkilla 6lbs is a bit heavy for back packing but you have to keep in mind I am 6'4" and I need the larger size to proved enough cover. I do want to make a small one that I can keep in a day pack just for those times I need to get out of the weather for few minutes. Plus I mainly plan to use this one for truck camping where weight won't be issue, though I am taking it with me today for my rifle deer season and I am going to pack in a couple of miles for a few days and with the cooling weather I may need a fire to help stay warm. Thanks for watching. Jason
@briargoatkilla
@briargoatkilla 9 років тому
primalarcher I had no idea you were that big. I'm only 5'9. A twin would be a decent enough shelter for a night or two...about like a poncho hooch. I'd definitely want a big one on a bad weather trip, no matter what the weight, though. I'm using a 10x6 nylon (non sil) tarp now and I wish it was bigger sometimes.

I have been using a regular plastic tarp for a backpacking shelter so I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on the pros and cons of a plastic tarp vs an oilskin tarp. Obviously weight is a big concern for backpacking but do some of the other qualities of the oilskin tarp make it worth the extra weight? Thanks!
@PrimalOutdoors
@PrimalOutdoors 8 років тому
+OctopusHook The biggest plus I see for the oilskin is that it won't get pin holes from sparks not saying it is fire resistant I know I said that in the video but I later found that not to be true, but I did have embers from my fire land all over it and they didn't burn any holes. Now with that being said it was extremely heavy and even if you make it yourself it is more expensive than a plastic tarp and if you do burn a hole in a cheap plastic tarp you can replace pretty inexpensively. If you plan to use it on a long term trip I would go for the oilskin as think it is sturdier and will last much longer, but short term trips where its not such a big deal if the tarp holds up I may just go with the cheap plastic tarp. Jason

Thanks for the info. Its an interesting project and im all for making my own gear but i think I'll stick with the plastic tarp until i can finde somthing that is lighter. I woulder if a oilskin tarp could be made from silk? That might get the weight down considerably. It was an interesting video anyway and the tarp looks great. Thanks!

I stumbled on your channel researching sewing a custom sil nylon tarp for this winter on the Hoh and bogy, steel heading in the national park.I want to get away from the masses down below. So I found a comment stating you got a winter out of it and suspected a better sheet might of made a difference.Would/are you doing another?I like the idea for the same reason you stated,it will stand up to fire embers better than nylon.I am actually thinking of incorporating both materials for a winter fire friendly/friendlier hammock tarp.thanks in advance for any feed back..Greg

Thanks for the response!I think I am going to make a king and use it in conjunction with a sil for this winter .I will let you know how it works out.I plan on going off trail up here .....www.protrails.com/gallery/518/washington/olympic-national-park-olympic-national-forest/hoh-rainforest-south-fork and here www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/bogachiel-river New to neither river but during the wet season it can get uncomfortable quick. as you can see from the trail reports I live in Washington on the east side of the Olympics these days as the economy on the west end is suffering badly.

If you add a strip of canvas around all the edges of the sheet it is much tougher and wont rip in high winds.

I'm in the drawing board point of making a 100% cotton canvas haversack right now, when I go to use the linseed oil on it, do I need to put the oil on both the outside and inside of the bag, or can I get by with just applying the oil to the outside?

i would use silicone and naptha or mineral spirits. 4 to 1. it won't rot the fabic like linseed oil does when it's not dried. i did a tarp yeats ago with boiled linseed oil and hung it out for two weeks and it had started roting on the edges. that was a 1000 count cotton fabric wasted. they are not cheap to replace.

Am I understanding right, that had the temperature been lower than it was, it would have taken longer than 'three weeks' to dry?
@another3997
@another3997 3 роки тому
Linseed oil takes a long, long time to dry. Do not fold up/scrunch up anything with wet linseed oil on it. It produces an exothermic reaction as it dries so it generates its own heat and can actually catch fire if stored incorrectly. Keep any impregnated cloth hung up or spread out as in this video. Once it's fully dry, it is safe. Add mineral spirits to reduce drying times.
