We’ve been and bought three classic luxury limousines for only £1,000 each, and we’re here to see whether they have what it takes to complete a series of off-road challenges.
Lining up we have a BMW 7 Series, a Lexus LS, and a Mercedes S-Class. That’s right, three cars you never thought you’d see attempt an off-road course… Until today!

No way they will be in usable condition, unless low mileage cars but those won't be cheap.

I owned that LS 430 for several years in the high mountains of Colorado. Even with summer tires, it was well behaved during the months where your tires would never touch road (only several inches of packed snow and ice). It was also quite capable of driving on dirt forest service roads almost as bad as what you just tested. What's more, if you turned off the ASR, you could drive a hundred yards forward with the car 45 degrees sideways... it was buttery smooth and easy to feather. Last, it started without fail, including on an unusually cold morning where the temperature was -45 degrees. Everything about that car, including the factory Mark Levinson audio system, was top notch. Did I mention it got 28 MPG on the highway?

@@zakzwijn8410 I got mine secondhand, 7 years old, with 100k miles. But new Lexus owners tend to get their cars properly serviced and maintained by their dealership, so you get full maintenance records, Toyota reliability, and luxury... I paid only 20% the cost of that car when it was new, but it was so pristine that you couldn't guess the age.

@thetimekillerx not true,I have a 2010 W221 S class and have recently changed expensive Mercedes parts for own parts costing 90% less than the main dealer and front right suspension £935 + vat main dealer £165 oem part no vat,changed abs sensor £135 + vat main dealer £26 for 2 oem part. As for fuel yes it’s a killer especially with current prices but on the motorway it only does 8mpg less than my sons 1.2 tsi vw polo and it’s a 3 litre V6 with 258 bhp

@@MiguelGouveiaFreitas Not much, considering the converted into 2022 dollars the merc s500 cost between 128,000 and 178,000 depending on trim. All packed with more tech and the power needed for this light off road course. The difference is with a modern 4x4 you won't have to risk damaging the exterior with the added ground clearances. A cheap 15k to 25k basic 4x4 today would walk over this course unscaved. If you wanted to repair all the damage they caused to the old luxury barges it'd be well over 10,000$ just from this video alone. Theyd also fail at driving through a tiny mud puddle with how low they are mud would cease the seals on the doors ruining the interior due to how low they are as well as the engine. Any test requiring locking diffs they'd fail on or just get stuck on the rocks. There's really no comparison. It'd be pretty pathetic if a vehicle that originaly cost 128 to 178k not to last 30 minutes on roads as such. Keep in mind some countires those roads would be considered nice. You'll know what I mean if you've seen any topgear UK specials from the Clarkson era.

I agree, that era of 7 series is now widely considered one of the best BMW's ever made and have become very hot on the market. Makes a good collector/investment car, I personally think they look very good.

After watching this video I now see the hype behind this era of 7 series. Looking back it's no surprise these 7 series are becoming most peoples favorite BMW ever made, ageless and classic handsome looks and surprising reliabilty and power with some pretty good tech inside. Best era of 7 series and is in the discussion for top 3 BMW cars of all time.

All W220 has air suspension. Why didn't they enabled the offroad mode? Higher clearance, ESP on and its a walk in the park.

Would be an interesting exercise to see what it costs to keep each of these cars running (MOT'd) for a year vs. their modern equivalents, including initial cost and depreciation!

Probably Lexus. If it was well kept before. In UK even insurance for a year on 7-series will cost more than 1k. And some simple repairs and interval service are expensive as well so no surprise these cars cost next to nothing.

@@RarePotatoHD problem with these old cars is that, sure, we can buy them on the cheap, but then it'll be 3500 for a clutch, 2000 for a head casket, abs no longer working, etc etc basically ending up with a bill 5 times more than the car.

The e65 might fare alright I've used my e32 off road in paddocks quite a bit cutting wood and filling the boot when I didn't have a trailer handy haha.

I got a 01 s320 lately, taking my car collection to 2 E39 BMWs, 2 Alfas (156, 166) and now this thing. My mum is actually driving it at the moment and quite likes it. Most of the rust is actually on the b pillar trim, other than that you can see the odd "spider web" under the paint. For what I paid, I quite like it. I've never owned an s class before. Of course the build quality of the interior is utterly insane (insanely bad) when you compare it to my E39 bmws. Air suspension is relaxing though, and this v6 petrol and it's transmission are meant to be pretty stout.

Like I keep telling everyone, Lexus is an amazing brand. I love Japanese cars, and the reliability and quality of Lexus' manufacturing has to be seen to be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the early LS400s were junk and parts availability for any LS400, including the later ones which are simply fantastic, is piss poor.

@@EdwardM104 this is quite simply incorrect. The ls400 decimated the luxury competition. Parts availability is precisely what you would expect. Lexus have incredible customer service and the LS haS won THE JD powers quality surgery something loke.14 years out of 15, including being the world car of the Year 2007. Parts supply is usually kegislated for 10 years. It's been around 3 decades now. What reasonable expectation could you possibly have???
