Basically this song is based on runic inscriptions on bracteates and and other archaeological findings, during the "Migration Period". The only translation that is almost accurate is "Landawariar"-more-or-less "protector of the land". The kulning (high pitched, sustained vocals) was done by Annicke Shireen (who tours with them, and has her own band). STUNNING song!

You were probably looking for the word “primal”, because that is what Heilung does I think. They tap into an unconscious primal part of our brain. A language in rhythm and tones that is still there in our brains and a musical language that activates very primal feelings and reactions in the listener. Have a listen to Krigsaldr. I’m a pacifist in nature, but if you listen to that song, you can imagine how tribes used music to prepare warriors for war. There is aggression as an interruption in a fabric of desired peace, which makes war a necessity to survive.

Times arent really peaceful. We kill people in greater numbers in the 20th century and now now than we ever have throughout history. humans no matter the time period are brutal to each other and these songs are when we were more of collections of small communities that had to trust each other to survive the brutality that was just beyond the edge of the campfires.

Should be a long "I" for pronunciation: high-lung. Which is the German word for "healing" and is pretty much a perfect way to describe the music of Heilung. Other suggestions for them: "Tenet" (which is off the same album and was written in parts and overall as a palindrome -- it's a crazy neat song). "Norupo" "Krigsgaldr" (especially the live version of the song).
@kythian
@kythian Рік тому
I recently got to see Heilung live in Portland. Their show was altogether a unique experience; combination concert and performance art. Anoana is a peculiar song. The words are all taken from inscriptions on ornamental bronze disc's. However, the words themselves have unknown meaning, as nobody has put forward any translations. It is believed that they were meant to be protective charms and worn on the clothing of the owner. Since there is no translation the meaning of the song is truly up to the interpretation of the listener. Fascinating group for sure.

She started out playing Nordic Folk - she is from the Faroe Islands - but combines all kind of styles these days. There's 80s synth pop, indie rock, electronic, pop but the folk keeps popping up. And her voice.... be prepared to have your mind blown. Falling Free is her biggest song, but tunes like Salt or i Tokundi show off her skills and influences wonderfully as well.

Great reaction. The video imagery again harkens back to pre viking northern germanic culture. Not obvious but the birth of the child is taking place during a solar eclipse. In the culture of this time, children born during an eclipse were thought to have magic powers including healing (giving life to the dead bird), shape shifting and age shifting. The high pitched section just prior to the lullaby uses a traditional Swedish singing technique called kulning. It was used to call cows home from the pasture and also to communicate over long distances. Example by a traditional Swedish artist ukposts.info/have/v-deo/g6aliGmMsJ6aw4U.html.

so difficult to collect my thoughts....I am amazed, frightened, hopeful, feeling mortal, wanting to pray to some deity........I believe these are the emotions Maria and the band hope to elicit from the audience.........I can imagine these are EXACTLY the sounds made by pre-Christian Norse shaman, priests and warriors......I believe the language is a proto-Germanic ( or Scandinavian ) dialect.....note that the ritual takes place under an eclipse in the sky.......I like to think the ending shows Anoana merging with the ox in a perpetuation of nature in the circle of life....they make their costumes and instruments.........Heilung call their music "Amplified History".........

Please look at a lot more from them, Krigsgaldr is a song of war and peace, In Maidjen is a fantastic piece that was just an experiment in sound and altered state of mind, there are too many songs to recommend, so just go from album to album instead, you do connect on a more fundamental level with them

I love this song. A few followers hav suggested another of my favourite bands wardruna. Kvitravn is their latest album. I'd like to suggest also skugge from the same album. Look for the lyric video it has both nordic and english translations. Other good songs to try a reaction to especially if you really like the natural earthy sounds. Try: raido. Tyr. Urur. Solringen. Lakur. Helvegan. Kvit hort. Lyfjaberg. Valuspa. Andvevarljod

When you listen to Heilung you dont listen with your ears.... you always listen with your heart. Its something mystic and wild and far more beyond casual radio music.
