@@NotADuncon I would strongly encourage you not to try keto with cycling. It just isn’t healthy or sustainable. The way you burn carbs at such a massive rate you will not have insulin spikes and thus convert carbs to body fat. Rather focus on the quality of the carbs, fats and proteins you eat. That and just listen to your body. Also, pay attention to when you deliver those nutrients to your body.

You're awesome man! Been following you for a long time. I was a XC and track runner in hs and then transitioned to road bike racing in 2015. Fell in love with cycling hard. It's got the aerobic/anaerobic challenge of running but with lots more fun and way more to see in one day. Also, you should attempt this challenge again but next time train a bit for it, get a bike fit (your fit seemed far from ideal), a more aerodynamic set of wheels, way better/tighter fitting cycling kit, clipless pedals/shoes, and a way better nutrition strategy. All those changes and I'm almost certain you would take off easily 30+ mins. Again, you're awesome man!

Great job achieving your goal. My first 100 miler was with a small group of pretty elite endurance cyclists. We stopped at 45 miles and 75 miles and averaged 20mph for the 100 miles. Needless to say it was rough. I had been trying for months and months to ride 100 miles on my own, and either bonked or had mechanical issues. It was quite an emotional moment when I finally did it, and at such a good pace.

I'm happy with your comparison to me. I was unsure if I was in any sort of level like others. As I have only been recreational riding for about 1 year and now do a weekly ride averaging about 90km in a single day (4-6 hour rides). Not many sealed roads and with some climbs of upwards to 400m at times so distance travelled can be slow. I don't have a support vehicle and do the ride with food only what I can carry in a small bag with some additional water top ups along the way. My biggest things that prevents me going further is usually just the sawness from the saddle or the on set of night. I'm glad you actually experienced and shared your similar pains as many people won't talk about it. Considering I couldnt make 2km on my first day a year ago I am extremely proud of my achievements within 12months. Thank you for your video.

Late to the comments party here, I've read through the comments upthread and I don't get the negativity. So Nick was a world class 800 metre runner a few years ago and is clearly in good physical condition, however, specificity counts for so much. He's done very well in my opinion. Having cycled 10,25 and 50 mile time trials and covered 400 km audax or randoneur rides I can say being fast over 10 miles doesn't extrapolate into being able to cover 100 miles easily. Well done Nick 👏

Hey Nick, here are some tips that you might find helpful next time you go on a long ride: Get some cyclist clothes (a fitted jersey and a good chamois), some SPD-SL cleats and more specific bike shoes will also help a lot, and raise that seat post! Also, some SIS gels (and sport bars if you want something solid) will help much better with nutrition rather than those Cheetos and chips. It's not about getting as many calories as possible (in that case you could drink a bottle of oil since it has a ton of calories), but getting quality calories that will help you.

First time I did a century on my bike it was a double century. Seattle to Portland 2010. Super tough. I’ve never bonked so hard before. I got over the bridge from Washington to Oregon and figured Portland would be right there so I started really pushing it for maybe 20 miles and completely ran out of gas (carbs). It’s about 40 miles from the border to Portland. Had a chocolate bar and a can of coke and I was good again. Made it in at 10:30 at night. So exhausted. I’ve done it many times since and have improved my times greatly. Oh yeah the first bike was from the 1970’s. So fun to suffer like that. Totally hooked me. Century rides are easy now.

This man cycled 100 miles on a race bike with no clipless pedals... respect

Does it make a lot of difference though?
@DennisWurster
@DennisWurster 3 роки тому
@@rosihantu1 Yes. Running shoes are designed to absorb energy from a foot hitting the ground and deform. Cycling shoes have soles that are very stiff and transmit more force into the pedals. Nick was leaving some power on the table by choosing running shoes. Over an 8 hour ride that would be considerable.

He did have clipless pedals on tho. It’s still an incredible achievement however at the end you can see his cleats on the bottoms of his shoes 👍🏻

@@noahwilson625 Yep, They look like they were double-sided pedals. Flat one side, clip-in on the other.
@noahwilson625
@noahwilson625 3 роки тому
@@DennisWurster yep they’re perfect for beginner cyclists because they’re very comfortable and easy to clip in 👍🏻 it was still an incredible effort by Nick even with clipless pedals and with road pedals he could get even more power

I am an amateur cyclist and just got into cycling last year. I am all into cycling for performance now. My first century was averaged at 18mph. My most recent one was at 23mph. Love seeing awesome gains like this. Cycling is an amazing sport!

Former hardcore runner here. Took on cycling 2 years ago. Though that all that running would make cycling a breeze. Nope. I also discovered adductor muscles the hard way. I leard and improved so much. While running, I trained for ultra distance. I also just discovered ultra disctance cycling and currently training for The TABR.

Very nice and smart thinking by breaking it down into chunks. Great job in completing the century. What's the next goal...a double perhaps?

My brother-in-law and I did the STP (Seattle to Portland, 204 miles) in 2007. We did 138 miles the first day which was devastating. Lots of stops where people would be selling this incredible food. We could ANYTHING we wanted which was great!
