As a Geo Ecology student with great interest for film and animation I’d love a project where you would film a nature documentary about small live in an ecosystem only to zoom out in the end to show the audience, that what they thought was an entire rain forest is actually the tank in this guys living room. Imagine the amazement over the video perspective, scientific study, ecological experiment and human craftsmanship!

I had an aquarium with enough plants and aquatic life that I eventually didn't need to put food in anymore. It was self sustaining and the water was crystal clear. Was like a master level setup. Crazy what nature can do if you just add the right ingredients and leave it alone. I had to move out of state an unfortunately gave it to a guy who didn't realize what he had. I think about that aquarium all the time. 😭

Really cool! So much going on! Side note....the baby geckos aren't technically "clones" because they don't have identical DNA to the parent. In this type of parthenogenisis the chromosomes are still crossed over and there is recombination. So.... new DNA!!! FREAKING AWESOME!

Building an eco-system is a new trend even in Goldfish Community, too. The traditional way of Chinese goldfish keeping is a perfect example of self-contained solutions. Not chemical stuff or electrical device needed. A eco tank lasts for a long time.

I love these ecosystem tanks...every tank of creatures should be an ecosystem whether it is a reef tank or just a tank of goldfish. We owe it to them as their keepers! This one is truly superb. You didn't put any tree frogs in there which may have been wise as they would have kept you awake all night with their mating calls!! Well done, I loved the misting unit....

"If a female gecko produces an egg in the absence of a male, there is little point trying to incubate it. The egg will simply start growing fungus, so you should remove any unfertilised eggs as soon as they are laid. However, if you do decide to breed geckos, and mate male and female, then the eggs produced will be fertilised and therefore can be incubated to produce young."

@the book of random You should add predators for the snails, have predators reproduce into larger populations, so that you can add more predators, and just keep the cycle going. Snyder’s Moray can grow up to 4.5 - 7 inches. They are a neat predator to have inside of your ecosystem, to catch shrimps, or snails while camouflaging inside the water.

OMG! as an Environmental Sciences student who spends day in and day out discussing humans in the environment and ecosystems and biodiversity this was the coolest thing I have ever seen. So many species working together collectively exchanging waste, matter and energy. All being powered by a solar source in addition to having all the tophic levels present from Autotrophe, to heterotrophes and if I were you I would add some decomposers to restart the matter cycle of geochemicals. If you ever see this, Would you ever give me persmission to possibly attempt to make one and possibly do a master thesis project and write a paper on the progresssion of the tank, if not thats fine. very cool concept Loved this video.

I’m super curious about this! Do the different species keep the populations in check well enough or do you occasionally have to remove some of different species? What about the gecko babies? How self sustaining is this? Water change every couple months and some daily feeding? Or is it a daily upkeep? Especially with the plant life, I would assume some minor pruning every so often? I have too many questions and too few answers!

@Flesh&Bones Wow, thanks for your reply! I wish I had the place and resources for such a big enclosure currently.. I have a 60x40x40cm paludarium tank with false bottom, bioactive with springtails, isopods, live plants and about 1/3 water area with a small waterfall. The online sellers usually say that a small bowl of water is sufficient for these crabs, but I usually distrust a big seller who explains how easy it is to provide for a certain animal - it shouldn't be about minimum requirements, but now I hope they will use the water part at all.. 😅 G. dennerle var. "dare devil" is one of my favourites. Initially I wanted to order them 2 days ago, but in the beginning of september we will have a terraristics convention here in Berlin and I decided to wait for it because I refrain from ordering animals online if there are alternatives. 5cm deep burrows are a very helpful information though - they will find places for it in my enclosure. Thanks for your detailed answer and greetings from Berlin!
Flesh&Bones
Flesh&Bones 2 місяці тому
@Kai Schiller I do have a Geosesarma dennerle, they are a "Daredevil" color morph (at least that's what they are called here). My tank is 90x90x45cm (W, H, D). They usually only are on the ground of the tank, sometimes behind a wooden structure close to the water - but almost never inside. My tank is very humid, it's currently more likely a swamp. I used a webcam to check if they ever come out. They are digging 4-5cm into the ground and live there, usually coming out when every light in the room is turned off and it's silent. It's a bioactive paludarium with shrimp, snails, isopods and (hitchhiked) mini centipedes. I've never seen them anywhere above ground level, neither have babies that I know of. Probably will build another "observer" tank to study them a little and build them a better enclosure later.

@Dr. Plants Can i ask you Where did you buy the tank.?!?.

Ideas for your saltwater ecosystem (I don't know how big it's going to be so it might not work out) but try making an above ground area (mostly for style since, even with a huge tank, it would be very small), and maybe add a store bought crab and/or lobster. Their are actually a few youtubers who do the same thing.

This is one of the coolest vivariums that I've ever seen. The video is well done also.

Isn’t that how you found it, dork? UKposts doesn’t care about the content, only what works to keep them clicking, watching, and therefore make them money. Remember how Google’s slogan was “Don’t be evil”? Yeah - they scrapped that.

I'm happy to say, I got this video recommended to me by the algorithms. Maybe there is hope after all... either way, I found this paludarium project to be incredibly interesting! [Edit: I was calling the tank a "micro-biome" since I couldn't remember the proper name, but then it was mentioned in the video that this sort of set up is called a paludarium.]

Amazing! Great job. Shows how nature will find a way, always. Gives hope that when all us humans are gone nature will restore it self over time, hopefully.

Self Sustaining tanks are my favorite to see. My cousin continues to update a tank for his turtle and hopes to one day make it a self sustaining ecosystem

I always envy guys like you who has the knowledge and patience to create these awesome projects. I would love to have something like this but too lazy to learn and I might not be able to take care of it because of being a dad and a lot of stuff. My son loves and is always curious of animals and their habitat and loves watching videos like this. Great quality of a video by the way!

You aren’t lazy you just created more than this guy in the video ever has which is a real family. Not a tank full of things built to survive on their own but a family of people who rely on you. That the part that so many of my fellow under 30yr olds don’t get. These projects and other shit will never compare to what they are psychologically trying to compensate for.

I'm i the only one who would love to see this expanded into a bigger sized version? i think a closet size something like 2 meters tall, and 60 x 60 cm or probably even better, an long aquarium for more ground / water surface area.

Sometimes I wonder what an entire city (think of a city as big as New York) would look like if we gave it back to mother nature. The amount of animals that would live there in 20, 30, 50, 100 years would be astounding.

amazing paludarium! Thanks for showing us what it looks like one year after. I have a few questions and i hope you will answer them :) why did you move the geckos out of the tank and are they all in their seperate tank now? I'm having a paludarium myself and need to transfer my crabs into a new tank. Would love to add geckos like you did. My alocasia plants develop rotting roots when they are standing too wet... I wonder why yours seem to not have a problem with rain 5 times a day? Thanks so much for inspiring me!

maybe because you aren’t using mist and hiding the roots

I very much agree abt fish being left in a tank with no type of structure to hide in.

@Lupinchen Brause I have a fish tank with only shrimp and Cory catfish and those live well together, the shrimp eat their own babies as soon as they hatch if they don't manage to hide in moss or other plants so I don't think his habitat is any exception, it's just how animals behave, true he could have added different creatures in to have less odds of them fighting but I definitely don't think he could have prevented it completely

Ok, I think I’ve found my new obsession!😁 It’s fascinating, a living science experiment. To be honest it’s like playing god/nature , I’ve had many reptiles, insects, birds, fish, rodents and of course 4 legged humans. But this is what I wish I had years ago, habitat was always a struggle and this kind of combo of ecological husbandry (for lack of a better term😂) makes me want to do this! 😉 Just curious how many try’s did it take before perfecting this tank? Great content bro, you got my sub!

I mean this was so cool I subbed to you! yes plz do make more content amazing!

Man this was real cool to see. I kept terrariums and fish tanks and I kept the decor as realistic as possible. I didn't want my pets to feel like they were in captivity, so any environment they would be in in real life, is the environment I tried to have for them. I used real soil, real sand and real stones. The real plants take extra maintenance, so I used a lot of fake ones. I commend u for having healthy real plants. Those themselves need the perfect environment too. It may seem nerdy to ppl who can't appreciate stuff like this, but I'm amused by it. And the tropical storms were a real nice touch. Did u have a drainage system so the water levels don't get too high, or did it just evaporate between rain showers? And how long did the rain last each time? 🤔 I use to sit in front of my tanks for hours at a time. I had slight OCD when it came to the upkeep of my tanks. Keep em coming. Ppl like me enjoy this stuff 👌🏽

You should expand the tank, make it bigger and have like a connected tube that leads to another tank. A connected tube on both sides to make things more diverse, that they can travel between.

I see why you think that. But that would make it less natural plus they would probably develop tankism.
