Thanks for the great videos. Is there any specific frequency that we should be looking for? I'm asking this because I'm in Portugal and I've found out that there is a different z-wave frequency for Europe (868MHz I believe). If so, can we have several of those USB sticks for different frequencies or can that one read all?
@yoyoTechKnows
@yoyoTechKnows 6 років тому
Hi Carlos, yes! Zwave uses a different frequency in Europe than it does in North America. You will need to make sure all your devices including the USB stick is meant for Europe! I have wasted a bunch of time in the past trying to get poorly labled devices working and the problem was just the frequency!

Hi Zohair, You could get a raspberry pi with a Aeotec z-wave stick amzn.to/2Plhx8o to handle the EU frequencies, and install the smartthings binding in openHAB to have them both talk to each other. This way all your devices could work together. Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe!

So which do you prefer? OpenHAB or Home Assistant? I just bought this Zwave USB and and Pi to get started, havent decided which platform to go with. Id like Voice control (google) and have some TP link switches I may swap out for GE or Zooz switches and a Schelage lock. Also have a blueiris server with a Dahua and Amcrest outdoor camera. Which platform would you recomend for some more voice control and security focused? Thank you!
@BKHobby

Nelson Vieira, based on your requirements, I'd recommend openHAB. The recent release of an official Google Home action for openHAB gives OH the edge for voice control (setup is super simple, too). Speaking of easy setup, since you already have a Raspberry Pi, I recommend looking into openhabian - it does the installation and initial setup for you and lets you start focusing on the actual automation system design quickly.

I've thought about using DMX light control myself - but ended up going with a simpler solution, WS2812 LED strips driven by a NodeMCU with the awesome FastLED library, and controlled by MQTT/JSON. My openHAB sitemaps/rules select the different effects or colors to set the LED strips to, and I can use groups to set multiple strips at once (I used about 10 of them in door frames and in window sills, for a synchronized holiday lights effect last year).

Along with the August Smart Lock Pro, I bought the z-wave stick back in December. I had to return the stick because it wasn't certified for z-wave's new Security 2 (S2) protocol. Do you know of any other controllers that are S2 compatible devices? I get that "unknown device" message. Also, on inclusion, the lock warns me the the controller is not S2 compatible. I am using OpenHAB 2.1 On RPI3.
@yoyoTechKnows

There is a "testing" version of zwave binding that supports the security protocol (not sure if it is S2?). With this I was able to get my locks up and running securely in openhab.

If I want to add a smart switch to my setup, what switches are supported by OpenHAB and the Z-Wave stick? Say I wanted to add a GE Smart switch - is it simply a matter of picking up a Z-Wave stick, inserting it in the Raspberry Pi, go to the PaperUI and add the binding then install my smart switch? Or do I need to also install the switch bindings as well. I see bindings for Lutron - so would I need to NOT install a GE switch and just stick with Lutron? With my Hue lights, I got a Hue bridge and added that to OpenHAB. Would I need to get a Lutron bridge and add that as well? Or does the Z-Wave stick mean I won't need a bridge and as long as the GE switch is in the Z-Wave stick's database, I could go that route?

I must have a new Aeotec MultiSensor 6 which is a model # of ZW100-A on the box as it is showing in PaperUI as a Z-Wave Node 3 (021F:0003:0083:3.92) (zwave:device:f9a63c2e:node3) and can not be identified! HELP, what do I do now? PLEASE keep up the GREAT work.

@yoyoTechKnows 6 років тому
This is the same thing I spoke about in the video. It's simply a matter of adding the new deviceID to the Zwave database so it knows how to identify it. If you update openHAB this device will most likely get updated quick. Let me know if u update and it still does not identify it.

I must confess I am a newbie! I just purchased my first Raspberry Pi two weeks ago and installed openHABian v1.4. I have done a lot of reading and watching videos to get myself up to speed. If the ZW100-A is not in my installed database, how do I get it there? Remember your installing in this video the Aeotec MultiSensor 6 is the model ZW100! I have installed successfully the Z-Wave GE Smart Switch so I know that my procedures are working according to your video. Thanks.

@yoyoTechKnows
@yoyoTechKnows 5 років тому
Hello, thanks for watching! If all you want to control is ecobee and philips hue for now, openHAB will work with no additional hardware. If you want to control z-wave devices you would need to add a z-wave dongle to control them. openHAB can control wifi based devices like ecobee, sonos, lifx right out of the box. Philips Hue is zigbee, but it has a hub which turns it into wifi for hubs to controls. Once you have openHAB up and running you could control your lights, and thermostat from your ipad using openhab! Good luck, don't forget to subscribe!.

I'm having a rough time getting into the z-wave controller world and appreciate your videos. After a bit of online/forum reading, there seems to be a common theme of people recommending the use of HABmin over PaperUI for all z-wave management. Have you experimented or do you have any recommendations for one over the other? Having done a bit of research, I have recently plunged into OpenHabian over Linux (Ubuntu Server 18.04) and purchased many different z-wave devices without much forethought (whoops). It has been a bit of a bumpy ride. Right now it appears that I may need to take care of some phantom nodes (not 100% sure that is what I am seeing) and boat load of many other things to learn about OH. Moreover, for my non-phantomed ZW100 MultiSensor 6, it does not look like it sends regular updates back to the controller (is motion supposed to provide near-instant feedback?). Update frequency and switches that have instant status updates (ie: homeseer switches) would be great to see in future tutorials as I am feeling fairly lost. If anyone wants to take pitty on a mostly competent person who is struggling to get this off the ground, I would gladly accept :).
@yoyoTechKnows
@yoyoTechKnows 5 років тому
Hi toit! I switch back and forth between paper and HABmin, but if I had to choose to live with only one it would probably be HABmin. Take it slow, and don't be afraid to start clean, I find the ZWAVE network sometimes just needs time to fix itself as all the devices start talking. I use this geni.us/AAuj zwave controller and I have not had any issues. For the multiSensor, update option 5 "command to send" to "send basic set" and I usually set 2 "on time" to about 10 seconds. The device actually reports back in telling openhab once motion stops, I like it to report more and then handle things in openHAB. Let me know if that helps...... Good luck and thanks for watching!
@toit
@toit 5 років тому
Thank you for reaching out Bill, I appreciate it! My MS6 defaulted to "send basic set cc" for config parameter 5 and remains unchanged. I might be misinterpreting the send part, let me know as I couldn't find anything similar to the description. My config parameter 2 is labeled as "stay awake in battery mode", currently disabled, as the device is plugged in. Let me know if I am looking in the wrong spot (the most current 'stable' release of OH is what I installed atm). I am using the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5, it seems to be the popular recommendation (thanks reddit) and on the plus side, no phantom nodes... I forgot that I joined few motion sensors a long time ago and since left them powered off (removed batteries) as I gave up on my first z-wave attempts initially. For whatever reason, OH decided that those nodes were 'online' during the detection phase. With batteries re-inserted and communications re-established , OH can properly diagnose them as offline when they actually do go offline - let's chalk that up to an OH bug. So, I basically have only added nodes in OH and done nothing else. Where I am still lost is the reporting delay on the nodes. Observing PaperUI / HABmin, updates seem to happen a slow rate (20-30 mins?), ie: the luminance sensor if I turn room lights off/on. I haven't measured the time yet, but I feel like I am missing something here. For example, say you were polling for motion and wanted to set off an audible alarm (yep I do have Aeotec sirens still in a box), you would want that happening as close to to real-time as possible... I'm certain this is achievable. Sorry for the huge dialogue over youtube, it's probably not the most suitable space - surely I am not the only newb going through this :)

@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 5 років тому
Not directly, but as @yoyoTech said, you can put a AEOTEC (formerly AEON) micro or nano switch or dimmer in the wall box. You can connect your existing switch to to the AEOTEC device and it looks like a normal switch when put together, but is smart and fully automatable. If you replace your existing switch with a push button style switch it can make it even more useful by adding dimming at the actual switch as well as through openhab. I mention the AEOTEC version as I like how small they are, they just work and AEOTEC also make the most recommended Z-Stick. Fibaro and a couple of others make similar devices but I have only used AEOTEC devices. I just stick to what I know works.

What is the best procedure for using the USB Z-Stick Gen5 with the Raspberry Pi regarding removing the stick to add other Z-Wave products? Should I just unplug and then plug in the USB stick? Should I power down the Raspberry PI, then unplug the USB stick, plug it back in and power up the Raspberry PI?
@yoyoTechKnows

Technically nothing should happen by just removing it and putting it back, it's serial over USB. Worst case restart. But you are better off using openHAB to initiate pairing so u should not have to really ever remove it. But I u want you can use the button method outlined in the device instructions.
@georgenoren2174

@wa8khp - I just finished an extensive discussion on the openHab forum with the Maintainer, Chris Jackson, about this. Aeotec is very proud of their feature of wandering about with the stick to add devices. However, in my case (raspberry PI and openHab 2) whenever I removed the device, the system forgot about it and added it anew when the stick was re-attached (requiring all the associated z-wave devices to be added again) - not good. Chris told me that he believed that the only way to add things to openHab was to do it through the UI. In spite of what Aeotec wants us to do, don't remove it from the system. Instead, just use the "Search for Things" button (in the Paper UI Inbox). When you hit this button, openHab puts the Z-stick into inclusion mode and it will discover any new device that is in range. Of course, this means that a new thing that is far away possibly won't be discovered as easily as if you brought the Z-stick to it, but it should eventually be found if the z-wave net is connected enough. I have been following this procedure and have not had a problem, although I haven't added many things lately. I would suggest that if you are starting up brand-new, you should add any z-wave stuff to the Z-stick BEFORE PLUGGING IT IN THE FIRST TIME. The device in the Z-sticks database will then be more quickly discovered. After that, it is best to add new devices from the UI.
@wa8khp-468
@wa8khp-468 6 років тому
THANKS, good to know there are potential problems when removing/installing the USB Z-stick with the power on. Maybe powering OFF the Raspberry PI, removing the Z-stick and doing the inclusions then inserting the Z-stick and powering up the PI would be safe. I have many GE wall switches for 2, 3 and 4 way lights that I am going to install. It would be easier to do this at the switch when Pi is in the basement.
@georgenoren2174
@georgenoren2174 6 років тому
I don't know if they have fixed this over the years, but you used to have to be VERY careful with Unix/Linux based systems (raspberry PI) when you turned them off. They were very susceptible to losing information since the OS kept a lot of stuff in memory and didn't write it to non-volatile storage until it was convenient. Therefore, it was prudent to turn off a Unix system with three successive commands: # sync , # sync , # shutdown -f (note the # sign was the root prompt and the comma is a comma for separation - neither should be typed). The sync command forces a flush of memory to non-volatile storage; the second sync is over-cautious but sometimes necessary; and the shutdown command (should) flush memory also before shutting down. IMHO you should never just turn off a Unix based (or any other system). This may have been my problem with losing the identity of the Z-stick, as I may have been cavalier in turning off the PI. It seems logical that if you shutdown carefully, disconnect the z-stick and then replace it in the SAME physical USB port that it was in previously BEFORE turning it on, that the R-PI should not know that it was gone and should accept it as an old friend. Sometime I will test that...
@wa8khp-468

I have to say, OpenHab is terrible. Purchased a Raspberry Pi and an Aeotec Z-Stick to control a Kwikset lock in our new house. I've spent two days trying to get it working without success. Started by installing OpenHub on the baseline Raspbian load - got it working, but couldn't get the beta Z-wave binding working. Started over today with a fresh OpenHubian build. Can't get anything to work. Finding instructions like "Issue solved - "not sure what I did, but I reset the board 3 or 4 times and it just started working". Really?

Hi Stephen - don't blame openHAB :-( . Z-wave locks are tricky because of the security protocol. There is a "beta" binding that I have been using for some time that works well with openHAB and security protocol for Zwave, I believe it will become part of the main binding soon. Check out this thread! community.openhab.org/t/oh2-z-wave-refactoring-and-testing-and-security/21653/2591

yoyoTech fair enough. Wrote that in a fit of frustration. Ended up buying a Wink hub and going with the Homebridge Wink plugin. Works flawlessly. When the OpenHab z-wave lock Code goes mainstream, I’ll probably try again. I do appreciate your videos... well done.

played around with this (sorry) pile of shit for days now. raspberry pi + razberry 2 modul. no information. unreadable logs. documentation outdated or just the basic stuff every child finds on its own. lots of unknown devices (even if the same type has already been recognized - fgr222). i am really pissed. waste of time and energy. same with home assistant

started all over. removed the razberry modul and used the aeotec z stick with homeassistant and got it running within a few hours. key seems to be to reset the controller and all the devices
