@@1ronman I've calibrated a photo and done basic modeling from a photo, but what I want to know how to do it to be able to take an object and have it be "cradled" in a holder. Molded into place sort of. He does that a lot here.

@@dhmclean You could try using photogrammetry to make a model of the item and use it as a boolean to subtract the shape out of the container. A lot of work though lol and the tolerances may be too tight. In the beginning of the video he speeds over modeling from a photo so most likely he just used the sketch from the reference and extruded in -maybe added some wiggle room first- and then added a bevel to the edges.

I don't know about this guy, but I have ADHD, and the time spent looking for things is probably in the months if not years of life. I can waste an entire day looking for a specific screwdriver that is lost as it never has a definitive home. I am also an industrial designer, so apart from making this for the items to have a home, the process of designing and making cements a psychological motivation link to utilise the individual places. The action creates a bond in your mind so strong you get a boost of endorphins by just putting the item back in its place. This creates an exponential feedback loop that ensures future proofing against misplaces or lost items. I currently have 3 of everything, as I never find what I need when I need it and end up going shopping!!

Definitely a clean slate, clean mind sort of thing. A lot of your mental state is relative to your environment and when things are neat and tidy, you can "feel" more productive or puts your focus on not searching for things. But I agree, the time trade off might not be the main goal.

@@Dumppump Gridfinity is better for ADHD as it can be impulsively reorganized if needed and Zack also has it. I'm currently undergoing diagnosis and saving up for a bedslinger.

You have put much more effort into it and by default has a sunk cost of time and effort, along with the pride of being the designer and builder. It’s the attachment to the effort and process that ultimately helps encourage the correct use and abatement of bad habits like junking the drawer or not putting an item back,

@@Dumppump Well I really dislike such sunk costs even while being conscious of my ADHD tendencies because I have a strong need of flexibility in my time (because I might not be able to follow through on my commitments on a bad day) and in my space (because I might not have the executive function capacity to plan everything out perfectly the first time, as planning is not my strong suit, obviously). So this is why Gridfinity works for me. I can still be proud of taming my mess and living an organized life, without clutter that is annoying (and the ability to emotionally self-regulate is also compromised in ADHD). I am motivated to avoid bad habits by making it very, very easy to do the opposite, which is why Gridfinity is emphasizing spacial opennes (everything has to be immediately accessible at the cost of efficient use of space) and custom fit (it is satisfying to put things into spaces that perfectly fit them, even in the face of the temptation to put them wherever). Also Gridfinity can be grown over time, as more and more modules are added and rearranged, lowering the barrier to entry compared to custom solutions that you have to do yourself first, which is also very good for motivation, which is, again, impacted by ADHD. I can print a single Gridfinity grid and some ready made modules and start to use them immediately without dedicating any more time to planning and customization, and be motivated by the success of using that basic solution to expand on it, maybe even falling into hyperfixation on Gridfinifying everything around me for a time, until it tapers out and I switch focus to something else only to take up expanding the storage later which is very easy to do with a modular system.

Ok, reviewing the video again it's clear that he used Fusion360

You can use any 3d modeling software that exports STL files. Sketchup is free and can get you going. Measuring simply comes down to pulling out your ruler and angle.

Surely it doesnt save that much time compared to the duration of the print right? Is it more about saving material?

@@Peter-jt3de First layers take a long time, especially with big flat surfaces like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it saved over 20% of the printing time

@@Abhyuday_rai in the Cura print settings it's under Shell > Bottom Layers. If you don't see the settings you'll need to click the ⚙️ icon and search for that setting to enable it. Bottom Thickness setting will also work

By default, no. If you use software like octoprint or similar they have timelapse features/plugins that do snap a photo at the same position every layer. Moving the print head away every layer does come with some quality degradation though.

They use an application called Octoprint. It does pretty much exactly what you described.

@@TheAnoniemo As a side note, the quality degradation is mostly related to either printers that haven't been tuned well (temps too high, retractions too slow, etc) resulting in stringing during the print head moving away, or bowden setups resulting in the same thing. It's entirely possible to print something with and without octolapse and still have the same quality on a decent printer.

Octoprint makes it easy. There's also slicer plugins that will move the head to a specific position after every layer.

Thank y'all for the helpful answers! But you also need your camera settings synced to that specific time to take a picture, but the printer doesn't always take the same amount of time for eaah layer, right? Or is the camera somehow connected to the printer?

This is really cool! It appears that a lot of thought and effort was put into solving some of everyday gripes at the heart of your workflow and further customized to suit your needs. I find this is inspiring, something very much worth considering for anyone who owns a 3D-printer. Personally I would be a little concerned about making the modules too specific to certain items (although the perfect fits are nothing to scoff at, very satisfying to look at), as their items eventually wear out/get upgraded/etc. and may no longer fit, however it does appear that you have already considered this, as the design approach is very modular and the tips you provided to reduce filament usage will make this issue quite neglectable on the grand scale of things.
