Figures in History: Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898)
Otto von Bismarck was responsible for transforming a collection of small German states, unifying them into the German empire, and becoming its first chancellor. His diplomacy of realpolitik and powerful rule gained him the nickname of the "Iron Chancellor."

Wilhelm II wasn't the son of Wilhelm I. Bit of Historie: Emperor Wilhelm I died March 9.1888, his son Emperor Friedrich III died 99 days later (June 15.1888) through cancer so HIS son become Emperor and this man was Wilhelm II so the Year 1888 become famous in Germany as Dreikaiserjahr (Three Emperors-Year)
@TheTrueAdept

Actually, Wilhelm the Second found out about Otto Graf Bismarck's little project of inciting a socialist revolution so he can simply crush it with the army. Wilhelm the Second didn't like the sound of this at all... and with his incredible unpopularity in the Reichstag, dismissed Bismarck.
@TheKingofbrooklin
@TheKingofbrooklin 7 років тому
You are completely wrong informed. When Wilhelm II dismissed Bismarck he was already an very old and sick man. Also Bismarcks policies were already obselete when he was dismissed. Wilhelm II respected Bismarck and his policies and never destroyes any of it.
@TheTrueAdept
@TheTrueAdept 7 років тому
I didn't say Wilhelm the Second destroyed any of his policies, I said he found out about his little project of inciting socialist revolution and planning to crush it via the military and took offense to that, add to his age and advanced sickness, general unpopularity in the Reichstag, among other things got Bismarck dismissed. Wilhelm the Second might be a psychological WRECK of a man, but he wasn't a fucking idiot.
@kaisercronik8249
@kaisercronik8249 7 років тому
Aaron Neumann You are partially right, however I believe Wilhelm II was the greatest ruler Germany ever had. It was the British who manipulated WW1 into existence, since Germany was a strong independent nation, not under complete Rothschild control. Idiots like OP always claim Wilhelm II was incompetent, even though they know nothing about history. In fact, it was Wilhelm II who granted workers much more rights and holidays, which also caused tension between him and Bismarck.

And your forget that Prussia was the first to take lessons from the US Civil War about modern warfare (using trains to supply the troops with reinforcements, ammo, and food). In fact, Prussia was the first nation in Europe to modernize the use of train locomotion while Britain and France still stuck with horse drawn carriages.
@Headsetmeister
@Headsetmeister 5 років тому
The prussian military officials of the 19th century were partially salviating over the possibilitis trains offered them. But the whole goverment wasn't really interested in them because they had built streets modeled after the French "chausseen model. So they didn't want to spend more money for trains. The german states as whole were partly squabbling like children about the use of trains. It is ulterly hillarious what states were willing to do to one up other states.
@rraune7515
@rraune7515 5 років тому
The needle-gun was superior in the wars against Denmark and Austria, but in the Franco-Prussian war the french rifles were actually superior. Only through the use of better logistics, artillery and tactics did the german armies win the battles.

well we spend 16 percent on our military and 40-60 percent (which is less then Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Russia in GDP) on our social safety net(Medicare,Medicade, and social security). And we must be aware that Bismarck did this not because believed in it he even disliked it according records he did it to have the Social Democratic voters to abandon their party. In fact most of the social programs you would get (Heal-care and welfare) would be after retirement age with was 70 and that the life expectancy was 42. Von is the nobility, e.g.: Otto von Bismarck, and van is dutch or just shows dutch heritage, e.g.: Ludwig van Beethoven(he's actually German, but he isn't noble and the van is just a sign of dutch or low german heritage).

@boahkeinbockmehr
@boahkeinbockmehr 5 років тому
van is also german. Keep in mind that the netherlands once belonged to the hre. Von is also not strictly aristocratic, since it only means "of". It is just an abbreviation of the title e.g. duke of xxx. As von only indicates a location, it was e.g. also common for prostitutes to be called "von xxx", as they weren't allowed to work in their hometowns to prevent humiliation for their families. The only reason why "van" is nowadays more associated with the netherlands is due to the amount of dutch aristocratic titles, as their monarch sold them for quite some time to fill his bags (also to germans). That's also why "van" is usually associated with someone below a "von", though that doesn't necessarily have to be the case. the chances are just due to this title sale a lot higher of having a "money aristocrat" before you if they have a "van" in their name.

Bismarck was one of the most powerful people of his time because of his adherence to realpolitik, he didn't have a single ideology. He sided with groups which suited him the most. He used the conservatives to have the liberals and socialists banned and the reactionaries/nationalist to gear up the country for war. While doing so, he also started the world's first welfare state to take away support from socialists. And started the kulturkampf, which removed conservative religious power and replaced by him. He even had a long lasting effect even on his tiny acts. He once made legal representations for a certain poor German pharmacists to be freed as he was innocent from conspiracy to overthrow the conservative Spanish monarchy. Bismarck knew the man was a liberal, the man would move to the Spanish East Indies and marry a minor liberal Spanish noble. Their descendants would later be known as Zobel y Ayala and would still be one of the richest families in the Philippines. He really was a brilliant guy, only seconded by Merkel.
@magnoraider9551
@magnoraider9551 7 років тому
I´m not sure if you can compare Bismarck and Merkel because although both have a bit of a Polarisation (Bismarck is hated by socialists and Merkel by far-rights) and both had to deal with some Problems, you can`t really compare the situations in which they were and also not the amount of power they had....
@mrknifeguy9
@mrknifeguy9 7 років тому
True, I think Bismarck had more power, as he really didn't have to rely on popular support to act. Merkel may not have the same authority as he did, but she has it worse, if she succeeds in keeping the EU united and push through with the integration, then she would have certainly have surpassed Bismarck in achievement, with less power.

Looking at his appearance in that spiked helmet I always wondered if he was in the military. Apparently he was when did national service but it was for a short time. Interestingly I believe he was also in a dueling society when he was in college. Another interesting thing was the Prussians sent observers to the American Civil War where they observed what was going on and they learned to utilize the telegraph and the train systems to coordinate their movements.

Ah, Otto Von Bismarck. Or the living example of how “you can’t always tell the character of a man from the character of his youth” A brilliant man who wasn’t a fan of school, getting into many fuels of honor, only being injured once (his foe’s rapier broke I tell ya!) and surviving an Assassination attempt (all the shots either grazed him or bounced off the Iron Chancelor.)
