If you have a sore ear or feel like it might be slightly infected, you’re safe to put hydrogen peroxide into the ear as you keep your head tilted to the side for about 5 minutes. You can really hear and feel it go to work. Ear should feel great by next day. Take a few q-tips after it calms down in your ear and use them to clean up the remaining peroxide and junk that it loosens up.

We went on the original 64' silent, and then there was a 55" at our marina, but the captain told us we wanted the 60' instead, as it was way more efficient, both in the batteries, and the hull shape. He had brought the 64' across the Atlantic to Barbados and then up to the Palm Beach Boat show. Also, the older version did have a helm with a wheel upstairs, but they got rid of it in the last couple years. There had been plans at one point for a 44' version for the Australian market, but it was ditched for the bigger tri decks instead. Husband wants to enclosed trideck, but I just want the regular 60. We sold our boat earlier this year, a motor monohull, that we lived on for 6 years and Silent will be our next boat. It's unfair to compare it to a sailboat. It's for people who enjoy the luxury of a motoryacht, but want to be greener.
@boomtao

@@japersjolly8763 I love how people think they know something and are making some point, like "ain't nothing green about those batteries" as though internal combustion is somehow better. EVERYTHING about internal combustion is dirty and polluting. No battery electric vehicle is polluting. There is a small amount of pollution in the making of some types of batteries, but those are getting cleaned up and are not an inherent aspect of battery manufacture.

For many, the dream of living on a boat is real, but the fear of dealing with sails, ropes, and all the complications is only for experts like you guys. I personally find this yacht perfect to deliver a VERY reliable, pleasant and worry free experience. A unique way to enjoy the water for a very reasonable price tag. The cost of maintenance and fuel is minimal compared to the motor yachts, and also must consider wear down on sails and other things that break down often due to the many moving parts on a sail boat. You are free to enjoy the trip much more and not work so hard for it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Thank you for the honest video!

Something you never really spoke about was the comfort and things that make sailing more bearable that the electric makes feasible, it was mainly on performance numbers. I think if you want to be a hands on pulling cables and roughing it then your type of sailing is fine and "going without" is acceptable i.e. not enough water and not being able to move with no wind, where its about the hard work of maintaining and operating/working the yacht as aposed to the yacht working for you. For me having enough water, tv's, full size fridge and it being more like a home than just a boat is where I lay the importance. I personally have no interest in sailing across atlantics and pacifics in horrible weather and the Med, speciffically the Greek Islands, is where I want to be so whilst I appreciate your analysis mostly on the performance I would say there is no comparison on the comfort and availability of electrical advantages and love the look of that yacht. I think as you said its almost unfair to compare because they are 2 seperate things made for 2 seperate jobs and 2 seperate buyers. I bet you enjoyed the actual comfort though, you must have.
@leonply
@leonply Рік тому
I was thinking the same thing. The boat has full time air conditioning and fans, so you wouldn't need to have a hatch open during the night. I was surprised that wasn't mentioned, when talking about rain at night. Also, I don't really get how you can compare a super high tech electric comfort cruising catamaran which has enough room for ten people to a high performance trimaran which is designed more for racing and four people, rather than cruising with a lot of people aboard. The two vessels are both fabulous but very different. Viva la difference!
@donjonjr1
@donjonjr1 Рік тому
I got the same feeling too. I couldn't get the feel of the luxury of this boat as it was mostly rushed through those points. I find myself wondering what the fuel consumption comparison would be to a equally sized vessel. I also wonder what a high noon solar only propulsion test would yield as the shadows were quite long during the performed test. Definitely needs a redo

Great to see a meetup with Kara & Nate. The technology in this boat would be epic in a sailboat. You can’t have as many batteries or the weight would be too much, but there might be ways you could design things to have almost as much solar. Unlimited (hot) water would be great on a sailboat 😁 and it would certainly be a great fallback if the sail or mast was damaged.

The solar yacht is a great idea for gunkhole sailors. If it’s uncomfortable when it’s rough, it won’t be much of an oceangoing vessel because when it’s uncomfortable, it’s also inefficient. But it seems a lovely yacht for island hopping. A fascinating video, thanks.

*"it's unfair to compare it to a sailboat since it doesn't have any sails on it. (...) You can only compare it to power catamarans of similar size..."* Of course, you can. If two products serve the same general purpose to the extent one could weigh the pros and cons of going with one category over the other (sailboat/powerboat); you can compare them, and it is fair to do so. One may also say: *"I don't want a sailboat, the only comparison I'm interested in is ICE powerboat to electric/hybrid powerboat"* That's also fair but it's also a more restrictive comparison. Does not make the other less relevant or less fair.

I believe this 55 specifically has already made a transoceanic trip, and the 60 and 80 which are *significantly* newer in terms of design and engineering are certified for it. I believe the 60 has made the crossing without starting the generator (probably by riding strictly through the tropics and making extensive use of the kite sail). There's nothing unseaworthy about these boats from everything I've read so far.
@dustycrophopper2743
@dustycrophopper2743 9 місяців тому
Yes, but I would suggest keeping an eye out for inclement weather and only sail during good clean weather conditions, because its a solar and battery powered boat and its only propulsion system. If its hybrid like a solar and diesel then I'd feel a little safer bit any which ways, sail only in good conditions. Bad weather and sea can toss these boats around. Why are these only designed like catamarans? Why not pike a regular yacht so that the solar panels can be folded automatically and stored during storm conditions. Another reason why the regular design is good is because gyroscopes, stabilizers and self righting mechanisms can be installed.
@darthkek1953
@darthkek1953 6 днів тому
@@dustycrophopper2743 not quite true, it is hybrid-by-default. You can run the generator, that roars into the batteries, you can run the engines at full pelt. So your electric engine is being powered by diesel, not the sun, in that case.

Good Review ! Good video ! Nice boat. 1) I’m With You - Allways need a Cable steering system as a Back up. 2) Add a Main Sail to this Boat & Jib. This should be a sailboat also. Main sail Min. 3) Add 2 Wind turbines to generate more kw on Windy days. It was blowing pretty good in the video in one clip & that is missed kw. 4) wind generators could be raised & lowered for esthetics. 5) if Boat is Propeller driven - Boat should be tunnel drive / Jet Drive for efficiency. 6) Solar panels should be tuneable / able to raise on a angle to increase kw input. Cool Boat ! Quiet is Nice , But hull design needs improvement for Comfort.
@uncletuftin
@uncletuftin Рік тому
1) You can't turn a boat that isn't moving. If you lose your electrical system you are dead in the water. People are constantly fixing and repairing their cable steering because it's a tonne of moving parts and that wear and tear is more when your boat weighs 32 tonnes. 2) Even partial shading from ropes on solar panels destroy the efficiency. Your going to add a bunch of weight. If you add a mast and sail you might as well take the electric engines out. Also the efficiency they get is from a planing hull and high efficiency fixed blade props. 3)4) If the wind generator obstructs the panels at all your loosing. You're not going to use it going into the wind because of the conservation of energy. Two turbines making 500w only very occasionally, super dependant on where you are and what season. Solar panels still make some power on cloudy days, turbines have a pretty high thresh hold to be useful. You have to justify the weight to carry it around full time, raising and lowering also adds weight. Uglier, noiser, heavier boat for marginal gain to potential net loss. 5) Could be, but you lose a lot of reliability and probably you ocean crossing certification. 6) Again weight, complexity and reliability. Get a bad gust from the wrong angle and bend something so you can't put it down or drag anchor, or worst case rip some wiring. Riley doesn't touch on it because as he said the review is based on what he likes to do but one of the major concepts here is reliability and ease of maintenance. Two electric motors that can run underwater, two straight prop shafts, 4 seals and two direct short drive rudders.

Honest, fair review. Thanks for sharing this information. I think there are a couple of other factors to consider that were not mentioned. Whilst the obvious comparison is sail boat vs motor boat, I think you can also consider "heavy + luxury" boat, vs "lightweight + simple boat". The Lagoon 55 weighs 28 tonnes, so not that different in weight to the Silent 55. You can also consider that whilst you have probably have a lower speed, at least you can go in the direction you want to go. You can always sail your VMG. If the Silent 55 was making 5 knots with 10-15KW of solar, and the Lagoon was making 7-8 knots 45 degrees off the wind suddenly things look much closer. You can also sail when there is no wind or light winds. Obviously this solar vessel technology is not comparable with sailing vessels yet, but I think the gap might be closer than we think. If someone created a lightweight solar vessel with foils (yes, I know batteries are heavy...) that could use a quick burst of power to get up on foils, then you could cruise at high speed with using as much power.

This is why I Love and Respect Riley.... His Honesty. Sometimes Brutal Honesty but that is not a Bad thing in my eyes. My friends have often told me that I am to honest and sometimes that hurts people's feelings, But Why would you lie? Beautiful boat, but I totally understand where Riley is coming from.... You want to feel the magic of the wind pushing you forward... My brother has A Sailboat and hates all the high powered ski boats and such .. He was born to be A Captain and He Is Extraordinary as The Captain of his Sailboat. Just like Riley, On La Vagabond... Riley you are an Exceptional Captain and I believe that you did an incredible job assessing this "SILENT 55" WELL DONE CAPTAIN! So Good to see Nate and Kara in this video, I love their channel and them, SO MUCH FUN TO BE AROUND! LENNON'S HAIRCUT IS SO GROWN UP, IT LOOKS SO GOOD 😊 AND DARWIN IS LOOKING MORE LIKE DADDY EVERY DAY, ESPECIALLY THOSE EYES🥰 AND ELAYNA, YOU ARE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN AND A GREAT MOTHER AND PARTNER❤️ GOD SPEED ON YOUR NEW ADVENTURES AND JOURNEY, I AM DEFINITELY HERE FOR ALL OF IT♥️

Nice concept and seems to work as intended. They probably couldve gotten a little more solar on the roof or have some wings that deployed with some extra panels for more solar capture. The top deck/helm area was a nice touch with the retractable cover that acts like a roof when you want to be up there. I wonder if they added a gyro stabilization system if it help with the movement more. Like you have already said this would be a nice boat to travel around the med with but not something to use for blue water crossing. Nice boat and its a start in the next generation of boating. I wonder if they could make a sailing version of this boat for a true blue water capability build out!

Man how far royalty free music has come… at 20:30 that score mixed in with the cinematic birds eye view of the vessel is absolutely breath taking. Got me a bit emotional. Reminds me of any film you’d see from a major production. I remember just 15 years or so ago when I would make movies for fun for school or whatever, we would choose from awful royalty free music. It was comical. Now you get this?! My gosh… mad respect to the artists who make it and the website services that facilitate these services. Gosh the internet is a cool place.

Great review, thank you!

200KwH batteries ;) But it seems that with the dual 200Kw engines, this boat is targeted at the eco-conscious who don't want to be limited to solar speeds. 600 litres of fuel is equivalent to roughly 4800 KwH, or about 960 hours of charging at the 5kw solar input. It just seems to me to be a bit of a gimmick, because even though it is possible to travel purely on solar, a sailing yacht would be far more practical.
@DoctorMangler
@DoctorMangler 8 місяців тому
It's only a gimmick, eco conscious would have gone with solar + sail and ditched the full size fridge. Glad you called it out. A yacht that size with that hull should be running over 1000hp, probably close to 3000hp. I've seen 5x 900hp engines on yachts much smaller. The solar looks like it's at most 5k watts, but I'll be really really really generous and double it to 10k watts solar. The charging cycle takes 20% right off the top unless it's somehow fed directly to motors.... anyhow there will never be solar powered yachts unless we can change physics. 10k watts = 13.4 hp. Basically all that solar is smaller than a 15hp Evinrude. The solar in that configuration will only run at 90% to 100% for about 2 to 4 hours a day.... Nothing about that yacht adds up. It's not just a gimmick, it's a lying gimmick.

@@DoctorMangler I truly love it when people who have no idea, decide to comment. Here is feedback from the real world. - 7 days charter with 4 guests and two crew - Destination, circumnavigating Mallorca - Total distance travelled around 230nm - Average speed around 6 knots - Diesel generator use 0l (including all electrical appliances including aircon) It is clear that our schedule, in combination with the weather, suited the boat perfectly: - Breakfast around 9 and then a couple of hours of swimming, snorkelling, going to the beach if there was one at the cove. - Around 11 moving on to the next cove or beautiful travelling 2-4 hours (12-24 nm) depending on location and lunch. - Discovering the cove and the potential beach or village city. - Around 5, travelling to the night anchoring cove and when arriving enjoying dinner and then go ashore to check out the night-life, if there was a place close. There is not one boat that meets every need, but Silent Yachts and similar companies are far from a gimmick.

Not being a sailor myself (I’ve only played with a racing yacht in Cannes and a catamaran in Mandelieu) I do understand the feeling of the “missed opportunity” of not having a mast and a sail, and of course not having a rudder! I remember on the yacht in Cannes, losing the electronics was not that infrequent, if we hadn’t had a good old steel cable and wheel we would have been in some danger.

I think my biggest question on that goes to your question. If I understood this correctly, 392kw were generated by Solar, and 260kw were used for propulsion for a "overage" of 132kw (although if I understood this wrong I'd like it explained more). Then they generated by generator and additional 720kw which used up "his equivalent" of 3 months worth of fuel in 7 days. But that means they used 852kw for things other than propulsion...which seems like a lot. I find it funny because he complains how inefficient it is but then his wife is talking about the full sized refrigerator, fresh water on demand and all the other creature comforts. That's like comparing camping in a camper versus staying at an Embassy Suites. Technically if they had lived "boat life" I suspect they might not have used any fuel at all. I'd be happy for someone to clear up the math on this. As far as some of his other complaints about speed and how much the boat pitches, those are absolutely fair in my opinion, but not all boats are designed for all environments. If you had this boat anchored in an inlet in warm waters and were just staying in place enjoying the waters, it would be fabulous, a sailboat wouldn't compare just sitting there. If you are trying to sale from place to place quickly, totally different situation. I think that's my only problem with the video is that he took an orange and said that it was sweet and just as filling but it didn't turn out anything like the apple he wanted it to be.

@@johnwagner2049 This is a tough design decision. He shows the batteries easily accessible many times in the video. That makes maintenance easy and quite frankly, for the compartment to get water in it in any way would mean the ship is in real trouble. You could put the batteries much lower in the hull to take care of that problem, but then you introduce a lot of other issues. I think they made the right decision for what this boat is intended for. I think if you were sailing on rougher oceans around the world, it would be a totally different decision.

I don't feel like enough credit was given to what isn't involved with an all electric yacht and the quality of life that is increased as a result. Nobody had to raise the main, nobody had to plan heavily around the wind, nobody had to take a reef, nobody had to put the sails away, and nobody trims the sail. In addition... Lines aren't getting chafed, sails aren't getting old, rigging isn't needing replaced, and winches and blocks aren't breaking or needing replaced or maintained. In addition your boat isn't a gigantic lightning rod. You're also only maintaining one diesel engine instead of two or three. "The best part is no part." In short... Getting from point A to point B is more enjoyable and after you get there you spend less time "working on boats in exotic places". And that means less ordering parts for boats in remote places. And that adds again to quality of life. Riley made some valid points and maybe a plug in emergency tiller is a good idea? I also appreciate how carefully all of the metrics were kept track of. Btw, I say this as a sailor and hang glider pilot and I love using nature to do awesome things... Including the sun 🌞

So for me, the 3.4kt at 5kw solar is the key takeaway here. Looking at something like an HH44/52 having 5kw of solar is achievable and should you be caught in light wind you can just send the extra juice to the prop after the batteries are topped up. Helps to get back to where the wind is and back to sailing.
