On the homegrown thing. Flav is absolutely right that it economically makes the most sense to sell a homegrown player for 100% profit. However, I think what they were getting at (explained terribly) was that there should be FFP incentives to encourage bringing players through and keeping them. For example, their wages are not counted towards FFP or something similar. The system currently makes it more beneficial to sell them, which is flawed, making The Overlap guys right. Flav is also right in the sense that within the current system, selling homegrown makes the most sense. I think the point they felt Flav was missing is that the system should be changed to reward teams for bringing academy products into the first team.

The point with the academy products I think Carragher was trying to get at was that the purpose of the academy is too feed the 1st team, with FFP this could change the idea of the academy of just a place to bring through players too sell, that becoming its main purpose.

I agree with Carra that it's a sad state of affairs when Chelsea have to offload homegrown talent to balance their books. You're right that their predicament is 100% their own making, and I understand the extremely basic profit/loss nature of selling an academy player as opposed to one you've bought. The crux of the problem to me is "player amortisation": Club A buys Player X for £50m on a four year contract, which allows them to spread the fee into four £12.5m payments over four financial years. Even if they pay the full amount up front, they will do this little trick to fluff the books in the short term. It's a bit like wetting yourself if you're cold - it might be warm for a few minutes, then it gets even colder. However, when they sell a player, they will put the entire amount into that year's financial account. Now, with academy players there are obviously no payments to worry about in future financial years, which is why selling these players provide an instant injection of cash and is an attractive option for clubs in financial trouble, whether it be FFP or a downright struggle/inability to pay the bills. The thing is, using this method flies completely in the face of what clubs have been encouraged, and even forced, to do for years now. In European competitions, clubs can register 25 players. 8 of these have to be homegrown in the club's domestic league system, and four of those have to be homegrown at the club itself. If a club can't meet these quotas, then they simply have to leave that slot blank. This means that, if a club has no players in their squad that are homegrown in their country, they can only register 17 players for that year's European campaign. If they have plenty of players homegrown in their nation, but none at the club, they can register 21 players. It goes without saying that, in a long season with sometimes 60+ games, any team participating in Europe would very much like to have a full 25 player squad for European games. This is one of the reasons why the continued allowance of this 'creative accounting' is absolutely ludicrous. Chelsea have to raise funds to make up for their reckless spending. Great - they should. However, say they have two players, worth the same amount of money, it is surely completely bonkers that they have to sell the one that helps them comply with certain registration rules (and who they may or may not even prefer to the other player!) just so it will help them balance their books - even though they don't get any more money for one player over another! Imagine your car breaks, and in order to afford the repair you have to sell one of your watches. They're worth the same amount of money, but one is a family heirloom and your prized possession. The other one you bought in a jeweller's. Why should it matter how much you paid for it? Surely all that matters is the amount of money it will raise.

The one thing to say about league table though is that City and Arsenal haven’t played each other twice.. otherwise you could compare the table on an equal footing.. but who knows what the result will be in that match.. makes for a fab run in to the end of the season

Chelsea are just in this ludicrous position because of their spend and the best way to balance books is selling those academy prospects. Winning the Europa league cannot worth 3 points. To qualify for the competition you either need to have failed (finishing 3rd in your Champions' League group or by not finishing high enough in your domestic league the season prior), or have been in the 2nd division or below of your domestic leagues the season before winning the Europa. If Coventry win the FA cup, then win the Europa League in 2025 then fair enough, but every other other entrant to the competition is a failure. Far less pedigree than winning the FA cup. Winning the community shield is bigger than winning the Conference League.

The problem Carragher has is that as an academy player who played for the 2nd biggest club in England he definitely would have been sold off for a foreign upgrade such as Ronny Johnsen or Olof Mellberg. This stops him from being able to look at the issue rationally.

Got to have Oodegard for me. Would be Rodri Oodegard and De Bruyne. The reason for Rodri over Rice is that Rodri can do everything Rice can do and score the occasional clutch goal.

Gk - Alison Rb - Walker Cb - Dias Cb - VVD Lb - Robertson Cdm - Rodri Cm - kdb Cm - Rice Lw - Foden ST - Haaland Rw - Salah Gk - Edersons been really good these past 2 seasons not makeing ent horrendous errors (the pen against liverpool was all ake, not good by Ederson but when you make the desison to come out like ederson did you cant second guess and ake put him in danger) but alisson has been the better keeper for longer, i find that he has become immune to criticism as he hasn't been perfect but he is the better shot stopper, Rb / Lb - best fallbacks over the past 2 years, trent is good but im not sacrificeing the midfield to help him and his defensive work isnt good enough and if we are going for a creative team Ederson would be the first choice keeper Cb - Dias and VVD no question the one has been the best for the 3 years he has been in the league the other has been injured but was previously the best and is looking like his former self Midfield- Rodri and Kdb are just 2 of the best itw and world class, Rice although a nuber 6 has to get into the team for his brilliance Rw / Lw - Sala is mr consistent not the best player but the one of the most lethal and effective players out there and foden is just magical when given licence to rome into the midfield and not asked to hold the width, foden gets into this team so if not lw then in the middle over rice St - Haaland, nobody even gets close

As a liverpool fan i've got to disagree with james about Gomez, Gomez has had 3 huge injuries and and struggled for a time, people forget he was the main partner for VVD over our 50 odd game unbeaten run. But since the start of this season hes been far better again, filling in at RB and then LB, Robertson has been on crap form for now years, always out of position and giving teams chances never mind him being nowhere near is consistent going foward, Gomez has put the best run together of a liverpool LB in years, its why hes back in the england squad, no offence to ben davies, but to compare gomez's form this season to him is crazy.
