4:57 "NO" means "STOP" - Teach your cat that "NO" means "STOP" and if they do, they get rewarded

This makes so much sense! It’s the same approach as teaching “leave it” or “wait”. I’ve never thought to apply this to the word “no” because “no” seemed too broad or negative. You made it very clear how “no” doesn’t have to be negative but an exercise in will power and a chance to learn what behaviors are not desired!

Yes I am on the same path with my kit she is very well behaved, but I want to take it to the next level. About to move to an apartment my cat is currently hybrid inside and out I want her to be happy and still be able to go outside but I will have to leash train her as well as litterbox train her
@reginyra8401
@reginyra8401 2 роки тому
My siblings always asked me how my cats were so well behaved. I taught them 3 sounds, No, EHY (alternative to no. I use this when they try to eat something bad for them, like a URGENT NO), and Down to cover not being on the kitchen counters or table. Rewarding behavior has always gone a long way. It works for humans, cats and dogs! haha.
@leel3014
@leel3014 Рік тому
How did you train them with the word down?
@reginyra8401
@reginyra8401 Рік тому
@@leel3014 Whenever I caught them on the table, I would use the sound no, then point down while saying down. Repeat a couple of times/wait a couple of minutes. If they did it by themselves, I would give them in a treat, praise and pets. If they didn't do it by themselves, I would pull them off and when I put them down say down. Look them in the eye while doing this to ensure you have contact. It takes time and repetitive action. I did this consistently since they were kittens. If you are training an adult cat, it may not work well, depends on the cat. There are other methods, such as using a mist bottle if they refuse. I haven't used those methods as they were inconsistent in my cats reactions of caring about the water.

My cat is the same way. He’s very pushy and dominant. If you tell him no, I struggle to redirect him, because he goes wild. Playing with him as much as I can helps, but not enough. I’m 90% bedridden, though I stay on the couch because the bed is very painful for me. There’s times he will jump at me and bite me, I will tell him assertively “no” and he’s jumped onto the couch, stood up tall, made that “Mrrrrrrr” sound, before he launched himself at me and bit my shoulder, drew blood.

Thanks so much for sharing this info.! 👍🏼. I will try this out. 😊 And your last tip regarding competing stimuli is sooo true! It was hard to clicker train my Toyger kitten when my resident cat was in the room. I needed to separate them, and once they got the hang of it, I transitioned in the space where my resident cat was. They took turns. 🥰

Hi, since I got my first cat a month ago I decided to learn everything I could about cats and I found your channel, which has been really helpful. One thing that I keep questioning myself about clicker training and I couldn’t find the answer is: once my cat learns the command, do I have to always reward if I ask him to do it? For example, I’m teaching my cat to sit, and if I’m going to open the door to leave the house, and I ask him to sit, do I need a treat in hand every time I leave the door ? 👀 of course I want to reward him for good behavior and for following commands but it doesn’t seem to be easy to always have a treat in hand, except when we are doing the training sessions.
@OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal 2 роки тому
That's a great question and you are not the first one asking it. Let me try to summarize the answer. Your cat listens and obeys commands because there's an expectation of a reward. The key word here is expectation. If you never reward when you don't have a reward on your hand, if you don't have a reward in your hand the expectation of a reward is very low. If instead you give commands even outside the training session, without treats in your hand and you say "good" or "yes" or "click" and then go find the treats and reward, your cat will have the expectation of a reward even when there are no treats around. Hope this was clear :)
@raafadiamond
@raafadiamond 2 роки тому
@@OutdoorBengal thank you so much for answering. It helped a lot. I noticed my cat will come to me when I’m at the kitchen and immediately sit and look at me like he knows he gets a treat and I ask him to sit. (It is the cutest thing ever and helped him stop attacking my feet) so I always praised him for sitting, but since I didn’t ask him to do it I don’t give him a treat. I only do it if I have the clicker and I ask him to do it. Now we are training him to follow my finger, specially coz we started to take him to the hallway on our apartment building so he gets used to the harness and leash and it’s working pretty good.

In my old house there was a space under the cupboard where she could hang out which we don't have now. I realised she may be anxious so started playing more, showing her safe places to hide and sleep and she seemed to stop for to while but now I think she is trying to open the cupboard because food is in there. So, back to training basics and this is helpful thank yiu!

Hi Albert, when I try to do exercise 1 and 2, she does end up waiting and does it right but she loses interest after saying No and then stops doing the exercise as a whole. The sessions are so short then as she starts to lose focus/ interest. I also believe she definitely understands No, she gets off the counter/table when I usually say it But she chooses to be mischievous and then het back up there again within a short moment. Do you have any advise ? Thank you for taking your time in advance!

First check his teeth and gums to make sure he's not doing this for medical reasons. Cats love their habits so it's a little tricky to change them, it can take from 2 weeks to 2 months. You'll have to be persevere for a while. Give him a diversion when you are around, play with him. When you're away, give him something safe he can chew on like catnip wood sticks or a kickeroo from Kong company, they love to bite and kick them. There's catnip in it but you can also spray some valerian on it. They love this stuff 😊
@OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal 2 роки тому
Hello! No is just the 1st step but then you need to offer an alternative. As Alyson is saying, it might be hard to stop a behavior, partircularly if you don't know why it's happening. If it's boredom - Play more If it's health issue - Try to fix it as soon as possible If it's a bad habit - Offer something that they might prefer to chew instead and reward when they use the alternative version. Hope this helps!

@rowanscmorien4761

You can teach them some things when they're super young here's some examples I'd try: Teach them the sensations of things you'll want them to find comfortable when they're older, like being groomed, possibly wearing a harness, and having their paws touched. You can use this as a way to teach them how to start communicating with you. For example if you get a brush, brush the cat a little bit then pause, then show them the brush as a way to offer it, and brush them again. Learn their ways of showing interest in the activity such as leaning in, putting their ears at certain angles, headbutting, or blinking. Learn their ways of saying no or saying they've had enough, such as simple moving away or meowing, or putting their tail at a certain angle. Once you start to learn what their responses mean they start to learn what these sensations feel like you can practice doing the things in little bits, checking in with the cat, giving rewards, and building up to being groomed more thoroughly. If you need do these things with your cat when they're older they'll be more used to the sensations and will have learned that these activities are safe. You can teach them affectionate positive sounds/words and touches, just by interacting. You can teach them about feeding time by giving them a feeding time. You can start teaching them to come when you call by calling them for things like food and play time. You can also teach them where are good places to play (I have a no playing on the bed rule because I don't want my cats attacking me while I'm resting and getting kicked off the bed), and over time some of my cats learn to lead me to the centre of the living room to request play time.

Hi Albert, I love your cat tricks and advice! 👍🏻🍀 I’m the happy owner of a Bengal girlie as well. She’s called Romy, she’s the sweetest cat but she can also be very stubborn when it comes to doing things her way. One issue I’ve had from the start is that she refuses to do her clawing on the (card)boards aimed for that but prefers the kitchen furniture, the sofa side and the chairs side. I have tried everything to stop her from clawing at these unwanted places, I even used spray. But she insists on doing it there. Any tips on how to train her to claw at the right place? Many thanks already ! Mu and Romy 💖✨🐈

Hey, you might want to watch Jackson Galaxy's take on cats scratching behaviours. Every no needs to be supplemented with a yes. If your kitty likes scratching sofas, she might be trying to put her scent where yours is, she might prefer the softer texture or she might prefer vertical scratching, or maybe it's all 3! My cat was scratching my bedhead a lot until i figured out what he likes scratching - now my furniture is safe

Hello, Just found your cannel, and I have a question, do you only have one cat? I just got my bengal Zoe, 10 weeks old. And she already is a wild one, hence I want to start training her, also to keep her busy. Mainly, as I am always told I should not keep only one cat, especially a bengal.

Hello Mia and Albert, I have tried something similar. I tried teaching my 1 y/o rescue the “stay” command. Sometimes he is a good boy and wait for me to allow him to eat the treat. However, on multiple occasions, he would growl and swish his tail around and exhale deeply to show his frustration. I am all for training my cat tricks as they can be very useful and lifesaving. But I really don’t want to frustrate my cat. When he is clearly agitated, we just take a break from training. I was hoping if you can comment on this matter and what I should do?

Great video. I would like to see this subject done really "in-depth!" I would like to see how you keep her off the food surfaces of cupboards in the kitchen-and away from the hob/(stove top), please. Also examples of how to stop them eating random plants in the garden, when there is plenty of grass to eat. This is such an important subject to get absolutely right! Thank for highlighting it!

He literally just explained it. He said that teaching them the word no is the fastest way than to teach them all the expected behaviours. So if you see your cat go on the counter, you say no. When they get off, you reward them. They eat the plants? No. Reward. They scratch the sofa? No. Reward. Simple.

Hello Albert! I just recently found your channel and what a wealth of information. I've recently adopted a blind 9 week old kitten. He is very mouthy and bites very hard and often searches for anywhere on my body he can bite to instigate play. I'm starting clicker training. I know he is young and teething so I think some of this is transitional. I however wish to help him learn the right way to play with the training. I do have a question. He does not drink water ever. I add it to his wet food as It concerns me. I have water fountain, multiple bowls in the house but I think because he is blind he is startled when he comes across it and it goes up his nose detering him from having interest. Do you have any ideas of how to get him to drink? He is very treat motivated.
@OutdoorBengal
@OutdoorBengal Рік тому
Thank you for the love words. Regarding the water... - Cats are desert animals and are not optimized for seeking and drinking water. - They receive most of their water intake from the food they eat. Considering this, to get a cat to drink you can do 3 things: 1) Put the water in places where they will be. 2) Use sources of water that make noise to remember them to drink. 3) Feed them mostly wet food and even add water into their food. I hope this works. I switched my cat to raw, here's why: www.outdoorbengal.com/blogs/cat-health/i-started-feeding-my-cat-raw-you-should-too

I don't agree with those trainers who say to ignore negative behavior. Place a hidden camera in their house and I'm sure they don't practice what they preach. No is a simple word and I have used a stern no with my kitten and she will now bite everyone in the house except me. I will continue to use the word no. The rest of the family started saying no this week. I guess we used it as a little experiment to see how kitty will respond to both methods of communication. Ignoring behavior vs a stern no. Now If I can get her to learn cool tricks and sit on my shoulder too would be great. Just found your channel last night.we've had kitty for 3 weeks now. btw kitty sleeps on my chest or lap so she's not afraid of me. I love this video on training with no so that I can use it more broadly. I will try this.

I have 2 Siamese Kittens who are nearly 6 months old. Only of them poops next to the litterbox fairly regularly (she always pees in the box and sometimes poops in it). We have tried everything, we have had 2-3 litterboxes, placed them in different areas, tried different litter types, rewarded for correct behaviour etc. Do you have any tips? We usually don't see her do it to say no but we do try to feed at specific times to try and catch her in the act when/where possible.

Hi :-) I started at 4 months and that seemed like a really good time to start. I did the basic commands with her like sit,lay down and stay , down, come when I use her name and to lay down in her cat bed. Now she's around 2 years and i still use the old commands but also have tried learning her other stuff like highfive etc.

These videos are such a great idea, I desperately need one on counter-jumping! We adopted our tiger kitty 2 years ago, she is 6 now and brings so much joy to our lives. But no matter what we do she CONSTANTLY jumps up on the counters (which I absolutely despise). We have tried everything over the last 2 years-- I will list the things we have tried below... please help, I hate getting upset with my baby and it happens almost every day at least once. ***(For the record, physical punishment has never been used and never will be). We have tried each one of the following for a minimum of 2 months, and in most cases for well over 6 months, before moving on to the next Google search result: distraction, plenty of alternative places to climb/sit, foil/tape on counters, motion-activated air sprayer, spray bottle, extra play, and several vet visits (where she was prescribed daily anxiety medication and feliway pheromones, which we use consistently as directed). She either ignores us completely or just waits a little while and then tries again.

With my Siamese cat I had to create a spot in the kitchen that was higher than any other shelf option that also gave him the best vantage point to look down and see what is happening on the counter or stove. We also has to provide rewards for using this shelf initially. If I am cooking , he may need extra support and I will put treats that he can busy himself with while I prep

Hey thanks for all the video , I just got an 8 weeks little kitten (5 days ago ) , lovely as my Esa , I’m starting training him , but I use to leave food for him out all day , I know about scheduling their food is better , how often would you recommend, and what time ? He loves food since I rescued him for the street , I’m worry he would get hungry and won’t have food available, also should I feed him at night ? Last question isn’t to many treat bad for them ?

That is awesome! So happy you joined the cat parent family! I like feeding Mia 3 times a day, a good amount each of the time (basically until she stops eating) then I remove the food. Particularly with kittenss, you should not worry too much about calories intake. Once they are spayed, you will want to measure how much do you feed them :)

This is amazing! I’ve had a lot of cats in my life, they were all calm and obedient, but the last one that i rescued is a crazy little monster! I don’t know what to do with her, she risks her life because she’s impulsive, like when she fought with a dog, he bit her and now she has an intestinal hernia ☹️ I will try your tricks and hopefully she will also get more calm when she grows up! What kind of reward food do you use? Is it a special treat or just regular dry food?

Sorry to hear that. There are 4 different ways to educate a cat, a human, a horse... while you might correct behavior using positive punishment, it comes at a cost: Anxiety, Fear and Loss of Trust.
