OVE: Ohio State Football and Ryan Day's Quarterback Crisis

Ohio State football had been a juggernaut for superb quarterback play. Since the Urban Meyer era, and now into the Ryan Day era, the Buckeyes have had freakish athletes from Braxton Miller and Justin Fields, to tremendous throwers in Dwayne Haskins and CJ Stroud, manning the quarterback position. Now, the program is going from a tremendous failure in Kyle McCord, to a transfer in Will Howard that couldn't hold down the Kansas State job. How did we get here?

We had 1 awful year of defense, then a year with Knowles getting adjusted to the big 10 along with a giving up too many big plays in the second half of the season and then the year when the defense was fixed we had McCord who never had a statistical good game against any quality opponent. All this happened at a time when the team up North played their best football in 27 years. Things just didn't align for us. We will be fine this season

I think Ohio State coaches put lots of restrictions on the quarterback position at Ohio State. That's why CJ Stroud had a breakout game against Georgia and does well in the NFL. The game against Georgia they took the restrictions off in the first half and he played incredible. Second-half they got conservative lost their lead and ended up losing the game. CJ Stroud said in an interview that ohio state's offense was complicated and the transition to playing in the NFL was easier than it was at Ohio State.

Day probably knew if Stroud got injured and couldn't play then he had to put McCord in and he can't even throw a consistent screen pass. That's probably why he didn't want Stroud to run.

Lost me on this one, CJ was just good in college? He was the best pure passer to step foot on the Ohio state campus ever. Had a few bad games due to a bad shoulder year one, had two bad games against Michigan when they knew exactly what he was going to do and he didn’t run. Outside of that, he was one of the best passing QBs in college FB history. Did we not watch the same games?

He still put up over 300 passing yards in the games he lost. So you can't even say he had bad games. They just struggled to put the ball in the endzone because Connor Stalions knew what OSU was calling before the ball was even snapped.

Nothing happened with our qb situation. Sometimes, guys are misses. I mean, we had like 7 amazing qbs in a row. At one time or another, you're going to get the wrong guy. It happens to every team. We will be good at qb regardless. We dont need a super star this year. We just need a solid qb who can read the field, work the pocket, and go and get 3 to 5 yards here, and there. Will howard has everything a qb needs. He just needs to be smart.

I agree. Don't turn over the ball, Take care of the ball, run for 5 yards when there isn't anything there, hit your short "Gimme Passes", Hit a long shot a couple times a game, and don't turn over the ball. Oh and most importantly don't turn over the ball! That's what we need this year and we can win it all.

@@blkillia That's ridiculous, you sound like McCord's helicopter daddy. McCord was one of the worst QBs at OSU during the last 20 years. He pissed down his leg against Michigan, OSU's WRs were running wide open all year but the only thing he knows how to do is check the ball down as soon as it's snapped and throw late to MHJ while he's bracketed. The bottom line is he's an unathletic limited statue QB that can't process defenses and panics under the thought of pressure. That's why he's not an OSU caliber QB because he transfered to Syracuse due to being scared to compete.

You're hypothetical of Kyle staying with the team and winning that Cotton Bowl game only because Kyle was a starter is too ridiculous because the changes on the offensive Line is really what caused that game to be a guaranteed lost ..that's the problem with that Missouri game the offensive line offensive line offensive line they could not block they could not pass block that could not run block as a full unit certain players were plugged in that just could not do the job...

I dont know why everyone is so highvon will howard. He wasnt that impressive at K State. Ibthink everyone is sleeping on Devin he has more arm talent than Howard he just needs to stay healthy.

Howard beat that undefeated TCU team, that Michigan couldn't, for the Big12 Championship. Plus Howard's highlight tape is ridiculous. So the things he can do are impressive. He just needs to be coached up by Day and Chip to limit his mistakes to play more consistently. Lincoln Riley and Ryan Day wanted Howard because he has NFL traits.
