Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzrini introduces yet another innovative watercraft called the ‘pagurus’ or the ‘crabmaran’. formed as a 25-meter long amphibious catamaran, the newly designed vessel uses solar power to make its way through water and land.
Pagurus is a 25-meter (82-foot) solar-powered hybrid catamaran that can accommodate a total of 8 guests and 4 crew members. Living spaces are available in the two side hulls, in two or three rooms on each side, with kitchen and bathrooms.
Sailing propulsion is achieved with dual stern drive propellers, coupled with twin 890hp diesel engines, capable to move the ‘pagurus’ to an estimated top speed of 24 knots. in the immersed part of the yacht, the hulls are designed with a recessed space that guests two steel cylinders on each side, each one with a helical spiral flange like the thread of a screw. With the help of water friction, the screw cylinders generate energy to recharge the yacht batteries while sailing. Each cylinder is interconnected to an independent engine, which is connected to a trans fluid transmission and is able to generate motion in water (5 knots), along with simultaneous energy.

Well in a post apocalyptic world, you wont be able to go very far... cause you can no longer get fuel for your main engines that drive everything... but atleast you can keep your ipad charged! Maybe put some of these ideas into a sailing cat... that way even after your ipad charging batteries fail, you can still travel the world

Previous attempts at screw drives like this have shown that the screws move the boat forward, or backward, reasonably well in water. The speed of the screws was varied to steer. On land it was found to have so much friction trying to go forward, or backward, that it didn't work very well. The answer on land was to drive sideways with the rollers acting like wide wheels. The screw drive effect was only used to steer. This solved the friction problem with the sand. It actually did work. In water not as good as a propeller or jet. On land not as good as a dune buggy. Make a small dingy sized version. Leave the big boat at anchor and use it to get on and off the beach. Don't try to drive it cross country on land. Just crawl up above the high tide line.

First problem I see is the fact that, due to the screw drives and the motors needed to turn them, you now have ZERO space in the hulls. In fact you may have a negative volume budget. Second problem is the drive system itself, unless the screw drives are also being used in the water for propulsion you now have two separate drive trains for the crew to maintain. Third issue, the drive train. Screw drives are EXTREMELY inefficient when compared to tracks OR wheels, Colin Furze built a screw drive amphibious "tank" recently and while it WORKED it leaves a lot to be desired. 4th issue, the drive train (sensing a theme here?) At least in the animation, they _DID_ show how badly that vessel would chew up the landscape. I can't think of anyplace that would allow you to drive that thing up onto the beaches. Thoughts for possible improvement: 1. Build the vessel as a SWATH cat. Put the screws (or tracks might be better) in the lower bubbles, that way you regain usable space in the main hulls. 2. Ditch the full amphibian mode but make it beachable, possibly with articulating legs to "walk" up onto the beach.

Cool concept, but I don’t think it would work as great as what it seems. I don’t know of many beaches where you’d just be allowed to tear up the beach like that and not make a lot of people really upset. I see this possibly tearing up not only beaches but also destroying many reefs close to shore. I see this being a huge threat to ocean life getting cut up by the bottom.

i think this may need to be a tri-catamaran for it to get enough traction to overcome its inertia on land. I can see this working in swampy shallow waters as well.

Thats end of the world stuff right there...going on land is not needed though as the cyber truck thing is actually amphibious ....or could be which would probably then make this one of the most popular yacht designs in the world) - if so ditch the screw things add some of those new covered verticle axis portable wind power (pod) things and maybe hydro and keep this design its amazing.looks so cool.

Etc. At the end, what is the mission?

Could be useful for intentionally beaching on sand/mud but can't imagine the power drain to actually move this yacht miles inland on sand dunes. Deployable wheels to allow yacht's complete removal from water in hurricane weather/off season could be an attractive feature. Your superyacht would double as a marina luxury home while doing maintenance. Insurance costs would be reduced as well perhaps ?

The amphibious part seems more gimmick than useful. I can't see it crawling out of the water in most areas as it would require a wide sandy beach with a gentle incline.
@gregpeterson7946
@gregpeterson7946 3 роки тому
If you run it aground that crawl feature could be really useful. Of course, you now need to add cloudy days to your reasons to hang on the anchor a bit longer. The looks are impressive, but I don't like seeing those rear doors opening 2 feet above the water. I wonder if you can walk on that solar array. I'll bet it goes for at least a couple $ Mil.
@aidanmathews2912

The screws might be better if they were as wide as the whole pontoons, then use them for primary propulsion. If they are that wide you won’t get stuck. Make them out of something really tough. Have a really low gearing. Perhaps the middle of the screw shaft could be foamed or something for guaranteed buoyancy. Probably best to use 4 motors on each side of them.

The idea is nice, to have wormwheels in oversized (and severely strenghtened) hulls in a ship to allow movement on land but it's just not worth it. No one who could afford something of this size would order it. Powered by current day solar power alone on a SUNNY day the land movement would only be barely visible. The wormwheel land propulsion is a very impractical addition to the ship which would allow absurdly slow movement on only the most perfect beaches and it slows down the ship in water by adding massive weight.

Interesting design but seems rather unfeasible all your walking deck areas covered with solar panel for trying to traverse forward and af. An a boat that’s in the ocean and has moving parts on the bottom always has problems with leaking and barnacle buildup as cleaning those spiral drums will be an extensive job and all the crevices above will build up with barnacle and eventually immobilize the vehicle also the weight with the screw drum design you’ll never get traction but just slipped through the sand and rocks
