A day in life of a Japanese Elementary School with only 8 students and 11 teachers. This is a typical day for a Japanese family with 3 kids all in Japanese grade school. We start from early in the morning when they wake up and follow them through their elementary school morning routine, their daily school studies, school lunch meal, after school activities and finally coming home and having dinner with their family. The kids attend Kojin Shogakko, a typical Japanese public school but the main difference is that there are only 8 students at the school between grades 1-6. There are many interesting facets about the Japanes students daily life at school including their Japanese school lunchtime “Kyushoku” which isn’t just a break to fill stomachs, but it’s considered a form of food education. By consuming nutritious meals, students learn about healthy eating habits which helps carry over into their home life. What’s even better, is that cost on average 224 yen about $1.50 per meal, which means that even students coming from families with a tight budget are guaranteed at least 1 healthy meal each and every day. I hope you enjoy the typical day of these Japanese students.

As sad as it is to see the effects of depopulation in rural Japan, I can't help but think about the amount of love, patience and attention these students are afforded by their teachers. I think they're going to have phenomenal bases to move on in their educational careers because of the time they were afforded with their instructors.

Kid of the 80's, it was yes / no sir / ma'am to everyone. You had to hold the fork / knife proper. No elbows on table etc, I still remember being stabbed in the arm with a fork. I'm 47 I have to catch myself, saying ma'am and sir to teenagers out in the world. I put my elbows on the table, because I'm lazy and it feels comfortable. However seeing people not hold a table utensil correctly, makes me twitch and think bad thoughts. No joke seeing someone ham fist food into their mouth, drives me up a wall.

These kids are actually getting much better education than the latter! They basically have one on one classes. The principal is a really good guy also. You can tell he really loves what he does and those kids love him as well.

one on one classes are not good for development though. maybe good for learning knowledge but not sharing ideas or getting to know different viewpoints. i felt sad for the girl on her own in class with an empty desk beside her.

This is wonderful. It's no wonder that kids in Japan grow up with strong ethics. I love the idea of asking the kids their dreams and then bringing professionals from that world into the school to meet with them. Very powerful. When I was in Tokyo I was always struck by young kids with their backpacks getting onto trains on their own amongst all the bustle.

What a lovely, heartwarming community! There are great things about living in a big city, but I have to envy their connectedness and the slower pace of life. Those teachers also seem so kind and positive and attentive to their students. I love how the teachers and students all seem to be pitching in and working toward common goals for the benefit of all

Cleaning everywhere in school, clearing up and returning school lunches to its central store, various outside garden work. Students in Japan will grow up with a different mindset and respectfulness than most other countries. This is probably what shines through in society later. No wonder Japanese fans clean up football stadiums and locker rooms.

Every parent and faculty member works together to give those kids such an amazing education. Having teachers be so attentive with them being that it’s so few children, is the best for kids to be able to be heard when asking questions. What great hearts the adults have to be so involved. ❤

Two schools in my area had similar numbers (both less than 20 kids). But a few years ago the city closed them and now those kids get taken by bus to a larger, consolidated school (where I work as an English teacher). A bit sad I guess, but necessary from a budgetary point of view. And it’s kind of cute, the school buses they take have the names of the original village schools.

Unfortunately, these small rural schools with merged classes don't survive long, I think they are virtually gone in my country. In addition to the shortage of kids, teachers don't want to go there because they are usually remote, especially if there are minority kids.

Love the kiddos' energy - at each opportunity after their formal task, they are immediately onto the next fun thing. I think this speaks volume of the School's closely-knitted and free-will environment - the part the kid tap on the principal's stomach when he joked about them winning first grades was the funniest. On the flip side, I am rather upset by the possible closure of such a nice establishment due to dwindling population. The facilities (and even flooring) and people were so nice that I would have love studying there (and be encouraged to go school everyday) when I was young. Thank you for featuring!

This was absolutely incredible! Such a unique opportunity to be able to see the day in the life of a school like this. It was amazing to see how motivated the students were and how enthusiastic their teachers were. To see everyone cooperate with each other in the daily activities of the school made me so happy. I really hope the school is able to remain open no matter how few students they have. It’s wonderful that the students are able to have such close bonds with the teachers and get the attention that they need. The experience they have in the school in these formative years of their life will have a huge impact on them as they get older and go out into the world. Although population decline is a major issue in Japan, it is great to see the benefits that a small classroom size has on children 😊

So cute! The school oddly reminds me of my old primary school in regional Australia. We had a few more students in the school (I think there were only about 12-14). We didn't have nearly as many rooms or teachers but the students all got along really well and we all did our best. I miss the place sometimes.

Even though Japan’s declining birth rate is a major problem, their educational system is so unique and interesting. They really incorporated knowledge with culture. Students nt only learn the typical maths, language, sciences but also their own cultural musical instruments, calligraphy, independence, responsibility, environmental preservation, animal care & sports etc. So so good. Most complete educational system👍🏽👍🏽😭
