Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a scary head injury and concussion, displaying posturing, the fencing response, and wobbling on the field. Also, earlier in the game there was a controversial missed call on a helmet to helmet hit during the Chiefs NFL playoff victory over the Cleveland Browns. In this video we'll explain why this hit still caused a concussion, what exactly the fencing response is, and then my reaction to the missed call.

Yea, I've seen the reports it was a "tweaked nerve" in his neck and not a concussion. But... There is no nerve in the side of the neck that would cause a fencing response when its hit. Could he have hit a nerve AND had a concussion? Sure, but the only thing that causes that fencing response is a brain injury/concussion.

smells like a way to subvert concussion protocols for an important conf champ game but i will. say it certainly makes sense considering it didn’t seem like it was a concussion type impact rather more like a compression of the head inward which although not a concussion can be just as serious as we have seen in football before

The unfortunate reality is that CTE could end up bringing down football. Many analysts have shown that CTE is a lot more common than people think, and it’s a lot easier to get. Some say as much as 75% of the league has CTE. If these reports are true, they would have to shut the whole league down. Hundreds of billions of dollars would be lost, no one would let their kids play football anymore. America’s most popular sport would be over. That’s why the NFL is trying so hard to hide it. Just make sure you never let your kids play football.

That helmet to helmet hit is already a reviewable play in college, and it should be in the NFL.
@florencefortyseven

That would make the game so much slower, and it could result in New York being really pedantic about what they consider to be a helmet-to-helmet hit. They go through every element of the play in slow-motion, and basically LOOK for a reason to give away a penalty.

@@florencefortyseven do you watch college ball? It honestly doesn’t slow down the game all that much because most helmet to helmets are clear as day and don’t need to be reviewed. @ynotnilknarf39
@ynotnilknarf39 3 роки тому
every punch to the head is a micro concussion, in contact sports such as rugby, ice hockey, gridron, even cricket/baseball, every time the head is jolted/struck that is a concussion. it might not spark you out but it is the accumulated smaller knocks that add up just as much as the bigger but less frequent knocks. Problem is that every organisation in contact sports and even cycling think putting on a helmet helps, it actually has the opposite effect of making sport more dangerous. I've been studying helmet wearing for 20 years and as a former rugby player and long time cyclist (never worn a helmet) and my brother been a n amateur boxer pre head guards I have a fairly in depth understanding of the subject

For those saying he was choked out, first of all loss of consciousness from low blood flow would not cause fencing response. And second, the compression isn't long enough to cause LOC imo. Think of UFC fights. It takes a good 5+ seconds of a choke for a guy to go out. This was a second or two, maybe. Third, the angle of contact from the defenders arm is more straight down onto shoulder pads, not into the neck directly.

The nerve you said doesn't exist is the brachial plexus. Trauma, such as an impact from a forearm, can cause a knock out. In law enforcement and in martial arts, the technique is called a brachial stun. It is very real, however it is very hard to hit on some one from the front which is why you do not see it in MMA. Striking some one from the blind side is the most common example, which is what you see here.

Hey Doctor, Make sure and read the last sentence of this study. Abstract...A college football player sustained a contusion to his anterior neck, over the carotid artery. Less than a minute later he fainted, then experienced episodes of postural dizziness with bradycardia and hypotension. He completely recovered within 3 hours from the time of injury. An unusual but possible cause of this patient's syncopal episode is posttraumatic carotid sinus syncope. This case illustrates the importance of checking vital signs in any athlete who experiences loss of consciousness, and that its occurrence in a collision sport is not always caused by a concussion.

Dan Sorenson’s hit wasn’t targeting. He was going as fast as he can to knock him out of bounds and I see it all the time when guys try to pick up a first down. Most guys go low for the hips or legs. Unfortunately Higgins at the same time dove for the pylon and their trajectories was inevitable. I think Dan pulled his arms back to try to extend his right shoulder but of course he couldn’t stop as both players were diving so it’s unfortunate Higgins got there quicker so Dans helmet hit his helmet instead of his shoulders or body. You can see after contact he was extending his right shoulder but mistimed it. It was so bang bang that had he not fumbled it and they reviewed it nobody would’ve noticed the actual head to head. Dan is not a dirty player and the reason he gets to start is because he has great technique tackling and doesn’t make many bone-headed plays. I honestly think he was going lower for the hips or legs but the natural tendency to lower the head for that shoulder to get there quicker.

@Aryaan Khan if every tackle that has helmet to helmet contact we’re called the game would be unwatchable just like if every ticky tack block or hold we’re called. I honestly think if Romo didn’t mention the term leading with the helmet than nobody would be talking about it. Instead everyone would say Dan’s play was a playmaking tackle. Even the Browns players didn’t know about the controversy until after the game when press asked them about it, they had no idea. You must be a Browns fan..

After playing football for many years myself I would say he did not suffer a concussion, what he suffered from was a compression of the spinal cord in his neck. On top of that as the tackler has his arm wrapped around his neck he puts more force on the neck without the neck being able to move, further stressing the spinal chord or near brain stem. The shock to the spinal cord was enough that his brain lost the ability to communicate perfectly with his legs therefore making him wobble. I do believe he hit his head hard but that caused the neck crimp not a direct concussion. Thoughts?
