In "Wildlife," directed by Paul Dano and elegantly adapted from Richard Ford's novel of the same name, Carey Mulligan delivers one of her finest performances to date as Jeanette, a complex woman whose self-determination and self-involvement disrupts the values and expectations of a 1960s nuclear family. Fourteen-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette (Mulligan) and Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal)--a housewife and a golf pro--in a small town in 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job--and his sense of purpose--he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother's struggle as she tries to keep her head above water. With precise details and textures of its specific time and place, "Wildlife" commits to the viewpoint of a teenage boy observing the gradual dissolution of his parents' marriage.

I just saw this fine film at the Chicago Premiere where Carey Mulligan was being honored for Artistic Achievement . I enjoyed a brief conversation and a photo with my favorite actress of all time (I'm 62) and am happy to say that she is just as nice in person as she seems in interviews. I have so much respect for this woman and how she conducts her life . She balances marriage and motherhood, her art on stage and screen and charitable work as Global Ambassador for "Warchild" and Dementia Awareness without fanfare . Pure Class.

What a beautiful movie. I feel like the complexity of Carey Mulligan's character is what makes the movies so appealing. Also, props to the interviewer, he asked really intelligent questions.

Wow, I feel like I've just discovered this.... behind the scenes, I've been in the industry a long time but Paul Dano is like seeing direction for the first time.. Confidence, intelligence and pathos..and Carey is so thoughtful and intelligent,, and beautiful,,,,

Caught it last week. What gets you is the way these people talk. To each other and their son. The lines aren't typical at all. Carey has a big of I Tonya's mother in her. They're both telling the son by words and deeds that there's indeed a wildlife out there waiting for him. But we all know we choose to participate in it. Group mentalities, tunnel vision, spite, treachery, confusion, fear, trust. Not everyone is trained to be married. Not everyone has the experience of being part of something growing up. Projecting hope onto a family when you don't feel it inside is pretty rough going.

@@Yeodoongiiie Dude watch the trailer. It's hinted at in the trailer. It's pretty much what the story is centered around.

Mega MovieZ it’s not saying that in the trailers. It’s just pointing out a difficult marriage. You just gave away the ending for sure.

so what? Get over it. There are tragedies in life. Getting spoiled over a movie isn't one of them. I'll bet you know where your next meal is coming from and you're probably not homeless from being evicted. Gheesh.

Michelle McCann That’s seriously the stupidest point ever. ! I’m allowed to be angry that you spoiled a movie that I’ve been waiting to see. It’s a little fucking weird to compare that to life crisis things. You are one weird person. Goodbye spoiler idiot.

@sclogse1
@sclogse1 5 років тому
You could take it different ways. One, it could mean that the story isn't expansive. It stays tight, and doesn't move into other characters. There are no close ups or strong characters in the fire fighters. This is black coffee.
@lynnturman8157
@lynnturman8157 4 роки тому
My guess (not having seen the movie yet) is he means that for each scene, there wasn't a lot of coverage of different camera angles that are then pieced together in the editing room. There's only one or two set ups which puts a much bigger burden on the actors to deliver a good performance (to carry the story) instead of having performances created in the editing room.

Now imagine the film where the guy playing the auto czar plays the son, and the son plays the auto czar.
