***** Well in terms of the newer Persona games :P 3 and 4 have seemed to be in a similar place and stray farther off from 1 and 2 which are more closely linked with the original SMT series so I didn't really count the two into the picture here. They are what eventually lead to this which looks absolutely amazing. Also Persona 5 doesn't have the main SMT title which shows how far off Persona has deviated from the main series.

There's no continuing story between games, but there are references to the others. If you want to get in before P5 comes out, try P3FES then Persona 4 Golden. I'd say to do it this way because going back with Persona games is suuuuuuper difficult.

I wish all the music could be like this. I'm not a fan of jpop or jrap like what was in p3 and p4, but I still enjoyed the game enough to get past it. It would be awesome if all the music could be jazzy, but unfortunately, it's kind of a persona staple to have that music in there.

+Pduarte79 I also bought a vita for P4Golden (and Muramasa also), it was definitely worth it :) The best part is that you can play the older episodes on it (even though none is as good as P4 imo). From there I also got interested in playing the Shin Megami Tensei episodes (from which persona is originally a spin-off). I absolutely advise you to check SMT3 (Nocturne or Lucifer Call) or the Digital Devil Saga. Can't stress how great these games are. My absolute favourites with P4 without any question. All in all, I'm so hyped for P5! Hail Atlus!

+Pduarte79 I think I finally know how Persona 5 characters are going to travel to the "Other Side", it's a Mirror. They are going to travel trough Mirrors. You see, this game has such satanic symbolism, The all seeing eye, the 7 deadly sins, and the mirror plays a role in that nature. It's a way of the devil communicating/traveling through. So, I think that's how they are going to the other realm persay.

BLABLAMANMASTER Man if you haven't played Demon's Souls you cannot judge Bloodborne which is actually my most anticipated game (since Demon's Souls is my best game of last gen). and Ys, man once again, it is made by FALCOM so of course it will be awesome, I love those guys and if you've never played one of their game, I advise you to play Ys memories of Celceta, just fantastic on the Vita, trust me.

In past SMT games guns were an equipable item which they got rid of for some reason in 3 and 4 and also they're fighting demons not shadows.

Persona 3 physically feels like a much older game, feels much less refined, has all round worse writing, and a less likeable and believable cast, etc, then Persona 4, but its not a bad game. If Rory starts with Persona 4 first, it is fucking hard to get into such a 'old' feeling game that is so similar.

Honestly one of the only good games on the vita, so yes for sure. Also check out Persona 3 Portable on the PSN

Yeah, you don't have to play the other ones at all so don't worry about it. If you like this one, then you can check out 3 and 4. If you get really into it, then check out 1 and 2 and the rest of SMT but those are not a guaranteed love at first sight for most.

SkyflyNB Play a real shin megami tensei game. check out devil summoner 2, its pretty casual friendly and the mainline SMT games difficultly is severely exaggerated, if anything SMT 4 is too easy. Check out Nocturne too, I hear it has dante from devil may cry.

Don't listen to him no every persona game has its own independent story and characters how ever some times they reference other games for example in persona 4 you go on a field trip to the city persona 3 takes place in start with persona 3 then 4 you don't need to play persona 1 and 2 if you want those games aged really badly and are not recommend for getting into the series

Versus XIII Persona 2 plays just fine, unless you're playing the ps1 version but since I doubt people here speak moonrunes I don't find that likely. The psp version is perfectly playable and persona 2 is highly recommended, why you may ask? Well simple, the end boss is hitler. What more reason could you possibly need? The gameplay in persona 2 is pretty similar to other persona titles just without s. links and shit like that. Its a pretty straightforward RPG, more in line with the shin megami tensei series than later persona titles. You still have weaknesses and whatnot but the game does put more of an emphasis on strategy.

Where the other protagonists were trying to go somewhere (Elevator to somewhere, Limo to the light), the protagonist is trying to escape. Dude, he'll be a weirdo even by the standards of the other protagonists.

Well, it's not necessarily confirmed they were fighting personas in that scene, they might be fighting demons this time around, which would be awesome. I'm hoping for a Devil Summoner system where you can use your Persona's powers to influence people.. I mean we already know the MC channels his persona during the stealthy stuff, but it'd be cool if it could be used to manipulate people..

This is a 60+ hour social dungeon crawling rpg though not a puzzle adventure story :)

Persona is an JRPG developed by Atlus that allows you to follow at first one character. as you level up and explore the world you'll gain friends and relationships called social links. the more you spend time with them and help them with their problems your persona's level will increase giving you access to new powers and so on.along side new party members you'll sometimes meet past characters in the franchise linking each game together . another iconic system in Persona is the All Out Attack system to do this you must knock down (stun) all enemies, during a battle a character will suggest it as an option to you and if you choose for your party to attack all characters target the remaining enemies and a cinematic plays that cause's massive damage as everyone charges forward and attacks at the same time. Persona games usually follow a dungeon type adventure system much like Final Fantasy. characters earn personas through accepting feelings they have deep inside A.K.A their TRUE selves if they fail to accept their true natures they produce a shadow ( meaning you'll most likely end up in a boss battle.) if they accept who they are they will gain their persona if they don't you,ll have to fight them . what makes it hard is that your shadow knows EVERYTHING it is you after all so....HAVE FUN . this version of the "shadow " system is only present in Persona 4

persona 3/4 are these games thats this weird mix between traditional dungeon crawling, pokemon, and life sim. the defining feature of these games is the social link system, witch is a system in witch the more you talk to your party members and NPCs the more demons you're able to fuse together and the more spells you unlock for existing demons. its a game that turns character development into a gameplay mechanic that you have to use if you want to have an easy time with the game. also these games have amazing freaking soundtracks

That's a really, really, really big question. I guess the basic overarching answer is that the games are about a person who awakens (through experiences unique to each game) to a powerful inner being called a Persona which they can call upon to battle dark entities called Shadows. Beyond that the plots are fairly different, filled with a lot of symbolism and individual themes that are rather carefully planned out. The gameplay has usually involved equal parts RPG style exploration and life simulators. Normally that would turn me off of the game (hate sims) but it does it in a compelling way. Every character your character meets has the potential to form a bond with that person. That bond increases the power of your Persona, so you have incentive to pursue these different relationships. In effect, this means the game tells dozens of different stories in a "slice of life" kind of way, progressing on a tier system from 1 to 10 that helps you gain insight into each main character. And thankfully all the characters introduced in the various games so far have been (more or less) very likable and deep characters I WANTED to get to know anyway. Its not gonna be for everyone. But if you enjoy a complex, rich storyline and characters with depth and layers (and flaws) combined with an oldschool RP leveling system (I didn't realize how much I missed turnbased combat until I played with it again) then its magnificent. Unique enough not to be boring for JRPG fans, and I think rich enough that everyone else can enjoy it too.

Persona(3 and onwards) is a StudentSim/RPG game although there are Persona games of another genre (Arena and Dancing all Night)

I think we love the series because of its soundtrack. storytelling and the emotional teammates and side characters in its SocialSim and the Sim itself

It's the same art style (since Persona 3) and it's the same if not upgraded engine that they did Catherine on. Catherine was a test to see how well it ran on the Ps3 so they worked it into the Persona universe so it's canon but doesn't affect the stories. Plus the bar they are in looks like the Stray Sheep so it could possibly be in the same area.
