New American Military Aid for Ukraine - What's in the package and what impact will it have?

In early 2022, the US quickly emerged as one of Ukraine's most important military suppliers, supporting Kyiv with everything from artillery to armour & millions of rounds of artillery ammunition.
In late 2023, that vital flow of supplies began to stall as debate in Congress continued. And as supplies ran short, Russian forces took advantage and ground the front forward in several places.
Now, the US has passed a new package and the flow of supplies is resuming. In this video, we look at that package, examine its contents and ask what impact it might have as Ukraine reportedly faces some of its hardest defensive battles since 2022.

Well, after months of back and forth debate in the USA, here we are. This topic was one that needed to be revised more or less up to the point of final release as follow up announcements were made, but hopefully this gives a decent picture of the scale of what has just been committed and what it will (and won't) do for Ukraine. The broad takeaway is that from a purely materiel centred perspective, there might be enough here to make a difference once deliveries start in earnest - but it isn't an answer to all of Ukraine's requirements. Barring any more major and sudden developments, we should be back to the regular topic list next week. Thank you all for your ongoing engagement and support.

That corruption in DC is out of control is obvious. That we seem incapable to fix this is/has been a national security threat we have created for ourselves pretty much as a wedge issue generated out of thin air to beat the electorate into a near brain-death. The war that is coming will fix this and young people will die at the expense of partisan politics which is a very old and tragic story. Extend to US draft to females, that might help.

@MarcosElMalo2
@MarcosElMalo2 15 днів тому
By systems I guess you mean weapons platforms? Because it’s all systems, just at different levels. The U.S. DOD is a system of systems, and the DOD in turn is a subsystem of a higher level National Defense (or National Security) system. Economics and accounting are important at all levels. What is the highest system level? Geopolitics. This is why it is so important for a nation to have a long term strategy and a network of friend and allies to buy into your geopolitical strategy. (And to be perfectly frank, this is why Blinken is shit at his job. He’s the architect of a really dumb geopolitical strategy (going back to the Obama administration) that reversed the previous Kennanian strategy of containment. (Although it can be argued that it was the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld neocon strategy that kicked off the reversal.)) ((Note: a Keenan grand strategy would also support aid to Ukraine and support for our friends and allies.) If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, you need to reach up to these higher levels and learn what different experts have been saying. I’m not an expert myself, but I’ve learned enough to form an opinion about the wrongheadedness of the neocons under Bush, the soft neocons (under Obama and Biden), and the isolationists (under Trump). I hold out some hope that Biden will return to a policy of containment that will avoid a shooting war with any of the rogue nations.

There's an upside to reducing complacency on the part of US allies, some of whom have been content to outsource their defense burden to the US. The EU has an economy 10X larger than Russia, yet they are unable to supply such basics as 155mm shells to Ukraine. That is at least as damning about European preparedness as US reliability. The fact that a pittance of 10,000 155mm shells is a major burden for Germany points to a dangerous overreliance on the US to do everything for them.

But western countries set up their military with air supremacy in mind. What is the point of having millions of shells in stock for defensive trench warfare, when your strategy is to bomb enemy before they come towards you, so there shouldn’t be any static trench warfare. I don't know why USA does this, the delays, the announcement of equipment being delivered and then giving russians months in advance to prepare for it. Did russians or the Chinese do this while USA was in Vietnam? Did they announce the systems they were giving to the VC?

Timely report! Helps build the case. Europe certainly needs to do the necessary. Best if USA in a support role. But not abandoning Ukraine 🇺🇦

Let's remember it took the US years to stockpile as much ammunition, which is why Europe can't just re-create it fast while also delivering to Ukraine at the same time.

@@autohmaeWhere Germany really does what it can. Some people repeating Taurus - Taurus, but giving up another patriot system (out of duty) and brand-new IRIS T's, as well as building a new plant for artillery shells, is more than anyone else is doing. Macron talks the talk and Britain can only deliver what it produces. The Netherlands, bc of lack of Patriots, tries to buy something elsewhere. Spain and Italy are effing around. Greece wants to deliver "something" but only if it gets "insurance" that it gets something back. If all who produce artillery shells would deliver what it could produce, Ukraine would get at least 60- 100,000 shells a month + what the US can produce. So, it wouldn't be a miracle if everyone does "a bit" to help. I'm pretty pi**ed how some countries behave and how people are mislead.

Looking for the silver lining here, the delay and uncertainty of U.S. aid seems to have pushed the EU harder and further to do their part. There’s a very thin silver thread in U.S. domestic politics. The MAGA faction’s power in Congress really has only a small number of hard core true believers, with the main body of the conference being bullied to go along because Trump and Trump allies control campaign funding (and threaten insufficiently loyal representatives and senators with being “primaried”). But the nominally MAGA elected officials appear to be pretty frustrated with the extremists. (It’s hard to describe the situation without getting far into the details, so I’ll try to simplify.) While Trump is strong and can focus on party discipline, the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene can threaten the Speaker and deliver on that threat. This is why the foreign military aid package never came up for a vote. The Speaker of the House, elected by a very narrow margin, can be deposed with a handful of vote against him (this happened to his predecessor). This made him Trump’s lapdog. Trump is now (finally) in court, being tried for campaign finance fraud (the Hush Money case). This is taking up Trump’s time and attention that he should be spending on campaigning and browbeating republican congresspeople and senators. Trump has been at his weakest since the trial began. This is the moment that Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, chose to buck the MAGAs and assert the power of his office. He’s taking a big risk but he arguably couldn’t get the aid packages passed before this moment. He is still under the gun and might lose the Speakership. He doesn’t want to rely on help from the democrats who have sent mixed signals about their support. But the point is that there is a small window here that Johnson can break MAGA control of the House of Representatives, and maybe, just maybe, begin to work in a bipartisan way. It’s a very slender thread. A lot of things have to go right. But this thread didn’t exist before. And this gets us to November, although a new congress won’t be seated until January.

@@teardrop-in-a-fishbowl Let's remember NATO countries and others in Europe all need to have some kind of stock pile in case Russia gets silly ideas and wants to euh... visit an other country. Greece still has a conflict with Turkey which is a country with a fast growing military industry. So I think those kinds of factors do put some limit on what they can do with their existing stockpiles. You also forget something else, I think their are countries who aren't interested in letting Ukraine win in the short term, but a higher priority is to have Russia deplete their resources to prevent Russia starting any new conflicts for a long time.

Western aid policy in Ukraine is pretty obvious: extreme moderation. It’s the same policy that worked so well with COVID, where we were all in various levels of restrictions for almost two years, except for a few of us living in places that went for elimination rather than control. And with the climate crisis, same. And the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Moderation works well when you’re talking about making a deal with someone. In an existential struggle, not so much.

Or you educate and trust people, like Sweden, which had no restrictions, just daily public briefings and Q&A. And people we're trusted to act responsibly. Like socializing outdoors, and everyone that could work from home, did so. No schools were closed, as children didn't get that sick, if at all. The Swedish deathtoll wasn't bad at all, compared to the rest of Europe, looking back. The economy wasn't hurt, children's education and quality of life remained unaffected. And socializing outdoor, I found a rather minor infringement. I think Ukraine has so far fought this war in the same spirit Sweden took on Covid.

USA should let Ukraine charge them for the 'safe' disposal of all those DPICM shells they are sending to Ukraine. USA is going to pay for disposal anyway.......
@rajeshkanungo6627

We should have sold them to a disposal company which did live fire and testing. In Ukraine. They could have charged the US billions for testing out weapons for us and then used that to buy more body armor and other things.

These ideas are too obvious and common sense. Next you're going to suggest an across the board policy that if any stored equipment is "unacceptably out of date" it should be sold (discounted to whatever degree) immediately to Ukraine or the EU.
