Deep in the woods of North Carolina is a man name Joe Hollis who's lived off the grid for 50 years. Here he's mastered the techniques of a life tuned to nature, dependent on his natural environment for survival. He also has the largest collection of native Appalachian and Chinese medicinal herbs in the Eastern US. Join me on this most epic look into a lifestyle that is becoming more attractive to many in this rapidly developing world. This is part of our greater Appalachia series: • APPALACHIA 🇺🇸

What i'm trying to say is that genetics play the biggest role here. Dude could as well lack in nutrients and still live very long, while other people stay fit and lead healthy lives but at 60 their bodies are already broken down and they often have some serious illnesses. There's probably a bigger chance for that in such an unhealthy country like the US.

For many they get burned out or stressed out living this new age culture out and just want to live closer to a basic life - It can be done but you have to know a lot - I live in a rural area but I still go to town once a month or two months for groceries - If you want to live real basic it doesn't cost much to live at all - if you have trees on land it's easy to cut wood and build things - I've had electric bills at times that were never higher than $9 a month - I just used a small chest fridge and fan in summer - I'm ok with out air-condition - I still use a lot of wood for heat - but some electric heat - For most they would think I live hard -

I’m from a tribe in Borneo and I’m glad this old guy had the opportunity to experience our culture first hand and that it had a profound impact on the rest of his life. I noticed a couple of Borneo artifacts in his house - 21:30 a beadwork wall hanging by the door and a Borneo shield on the wall by the stairs just above his head (26:19). Much respect to what he’s doing. We, in Sarawak, Borneo, owe a lot of gratitude to all the Peace Corps workers who came in the 1960’s and 70’s to teach at our schools or work on agriculture.

Joe might be 80, bent over and using a bush crafted walking stick, but his mind is sharp as a tack and his eyes and ears are perfect so he just may be onto something with his herbal remedies. Like he mentioned, the Chinese are into herbal remedies and let's face it, they've been doing it for over 4,000 years. Who knows, without his plants, surroundings, stress-free lifestyle and commitment to life-long learning he may have been in a nursing home sitting in a wheelchair by 80. Good on him, living his dream which is more than most of us say or do.

I 'd hate to think what would happen to this place if 8 people moved into it. It's one thing building it all up from scratch using hard work, it's quite another just being gifted it with everything already built for you. People don't value what they haven't worked for. It's likely to attract some very unconscientious people with a completely different outlook to this guy.
@N.E.TGaming
@N.E.TGaming 7 місяців тому
@@sammyb1651That's the wrong line of thinking imo. He said it himself, he wants people to join him and expand on the groundwork he has built. He doesn't even realize that he IS the epitome of what we are trying to get back to as a community. If you somehow ever see this, you are truly inspiring in this ever-expanding digital world Joe. Hats off to you sir Edit: I want to say i recognize the modern medical industry is quite illustrious, hence if anyone who used that argument watched the video instead of looking for a reason to argue, you would have heard him say to Peter he would drive into town and use those services when needed. The point i was making is Joe represents what I think all "hard working Americans" are trying to get closer to instead of farther away from. Yes the man may have a website and take advantage of the modern amenities where it pays dividends to do so, but i dont personally believe that takes away for what this man represents and what hes trying to garner in his community, along with others. I could be wrong, but i personally think a much healthier, forward moving thinking way to go in the future are people trying to get back to this and worrying about how we tackle not having "modern amenities" as accessible as it is today vs people looking for ways to not like there fellow neighbor and make there team win in there world-view. Appreciate everyone who understood what i was going for as i was not intending to incite a debate. Feel free to disagree but personal attacks only discredit your credibility . Food for thought

When I was a kid in the 1980s, in Tennessee, there were amazing backwood carpenters that made furniture with hand tools. They didn't use screws or nails. Today you would call it tongue and grove. They made their own glue and metal brackets... and the furniture went together like a well-designed puzzle. They would sell it at the local Drive-in theater fleamarket or you could find one of them at the Co-op. Actual old-world carpentry is a lost art.

I have 2 handmade front porch rockers that my father bought back in the 70's at the Wood Whittlers in Gatlinburg that are never gonna wear out! Also, I have a handmade custom ordered jewelry box from there that I absolutely cherish that will last long after I'm gone! I'd much rather have the old-world furniture anyday!

Thank you for visiting Joe and introducing his home to your watchers, Peter. I’ve been so interested in homesteading and not only was Joe inspiring but so educational. I’m so glad you got to meet him before he fell ill and were able to promote his search for apprentices so younger people could join him. They are currently continuing what he started and have a new go fund me. This way of life is healthier, if more of us could do this and find a balance between plant and medicine, I think we’d be much happier. Thank you for this video- my favorite one yet.

You truly have a gift to ask the right questions. I have been hooked on your videos, interviewing the most unique people, who have the most extraordinary minds and outlooks in life. Although we all may not know half of what they are talking about, you know how to incite a conversation with just a simple question, and the ability to read the room. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching these, and have learnt so much from the little facts from each person!

Here was a man who understood the ephemerality of life and the connections and intersections and desiderata of all life....I think he came closer to understanding the meaning of life and was closer to "God" than most urban individuals can ever be or understand. When you look at all the religions you begin to see the human attempt to describe and grasp the ethers of life. Joe was a green man, part human and part plant...he fit perfectly amid the natural shade forest of Appalachia.

@@able880 You really lack an understanding of genetics. Telomeres and longevity genes decide lifespan. If you don't have good ones, nothing you do matters. We are all born with a finite timetable, and they are not at all equal. For example, a great dane will never make it to 35 due to bad genes. Same for most humans.
