This one makes me cry every time. It reminds me of my husband( who passed away) He's the only one whoever really knew me. We were married 34 years and I miss him so very much! I love Phil Collins talent & the depth that he sings from.

In my opinion the 80's music was more about true emotions, unlike today's music where they just sing a song with little emotion..

The perfect track to hold on to when you lost someone; not only a lover, could be your mother, your brother, your friend or even your dog. This song makes you feel like taking a chance to beat the odds and reach to that person at least on an emotional level. Thank you for making us believe Phil. What I love about the lyric is how realistic and straight it is. There's no easy and cliché phrases. Instead of saying: "I love you", he says: "You're the only one who really knew me at all". Much deeper meaning, doesn't it? I never thought of the "empty space" as what he feels inside, I think he refers to actually the empty space you see around a person who is alone. "And you coming back to me is against the odds, and that's what I've got to face", see? No corny lines involved again. Probably my favorite part of the track is the second verse. The backing vocals are amazing. I'm hooked on the phrase: "There's so much I need to say to you", it's fantastic; just think about it, how many things we keep inside when we lose someone? how many things come to mind just after that person is gone? Many, many things we have to keep to ourselves trying not to be hurt constantly by them. "But to wait for you is all I can do and that's what I've got to face", yeah, there's nothing we can do but have faith in a possibility to be together again. "Take a good look at me now, 'cause I'll still be standing here". A realistic touch again, 'cause no matter who left us, we still have to live on, and that's the hardest part. We'll still be here, missing someone, but here, alive. "And you coming back to me is against all odds, it's the chance I've got to take", kinda happy ending for the song, you just need to feel the hope that somehow it all can be like it was when he/she was here.

Singing live and sounding every bit as good as the studio version is rare. Plenty have covered this song, but Phil nails it. No one sings it quite like him. What a performance it truly is. And to think he was just the drummer and occasional singer when in the band.

I gotta give my old homie Josh props for dropping this gem on my answering machine back in highschool. My first girlfriend had just dumped me, and I was already going through a really screwed up time in life. Anyway I'm 43 now and I wish I could go back to that time knowing what I know now.

I smiled through this entire performance. I'm smitten at how these real artists can perform live in comparison to these lipsynchers we have today. Imagine now an average looking guy like Phil won't get a chance as our music industry is a virtual talentless model show.

At age 62 myself, I agree that his music takes you back to a certain time in the late eighties, early nineties like a instant Time Machine and reminds you who you were with and what you were doing when that song use to be played endlessly on the radio. The problem is that Collins had his share of haters since taking over Genesis. A lot Genesis fans thought the band sold out under his leadership when it went to play his mainstream pop music. Several other popular musicians at the time and his music became sort of a joke between them.Then he got a lot of bad press when it was reported he was dogging taxes and divorcing his second wife by fax, that he would call up or confront anyone who gave him bad press and cuss them out. By the early 2000’s a lot of people were just tired of seeing and hearing about him. Since then he’s had a resurgence of popularity it seems. A lot of rap groups have sampled his music in their songs, young kids that don’t remember the original genesis and only remember their mothers singing along to collins pop music when they were toddlers have became fans of his too.

I can’t express how much I love this song…

He is singing LIVE, and he sounds better than pretty much ANY artist today. And he was not considered a particularly outstanding singer back then, good, yes but not great. He was primarily known for being a drummer for Genesis. This ain't no pre-recorded auto-tuned stuff. This is back when all singers had to do was SING. I appreciate his vocal work so much more now. This was one of my favorite songs by him, beautifully performed live here.
