Q.
Phil Mickelson pressed down grass that was in his line of play. Why was this a penalty?
.
A.
Phil is seen here pressing down grass on his Line of Play, which as per Rule 8.1, is a no-no.
You are not permitted to improve the conditions affecting your stroke including by moving, bending or breaking any growing or attached natural object (e.g. grass).
This situation occurred before the Rule changes of 2019, so the player would have to accept the penalty, even if they re-teed their ball in another part of the teeing area, or went and restored the grass to its former position.
HOWEVER, from 2019 the player could have tried to restore the conditions as nearly as possible so that the improvement created by the original breach is eliminated, to avoid incurring a penalty.
BUT you couldn't avoid the penalty if the improvement couldn't be eliminated, EVEN if you re-teed your ball somewhere else.
Rule 8.1d

What mystifies me is that people see the same video that I just saw and come away thinking negatively of him. How is that even possible? He violated the rule on purpose in a diabolical attempt to incur a penalty? All he had to do was what he himself mentioned which was to simply move the ball a bit on the tee and then he wouldn't have been penalized. What I saw was a guy absentmindedly stomping down same grass that was barely in his way and then showing himself to be an honourable human being by alerting people to the fact that he might have violated the rules. @@DjBlakkTux The point is purposely modifying something to improve your line of play. He modified the course to create an a advantage and clearly a violation. As for when your ball is in a bush or something, the rule is that you have to take your stance in the least obtrusive way possible - usually by "backing in." Here's an excerpt of the rule that he violated. In this case it's a bush instead of a fence. 8.1a/4 - Example of Moving, Bending or Breaking an Immovable Obstruction Part of a fence that is situated out of bounds (and so is not a boundary object) leans onto the course and the player pushes it back into an upright position. This action breaches Rule 8.1a, which prohibits a player from improving conditions affecting the stroke by moving immovable obstructions. The player gets the general penalty unless the player restores the conditions by returning the fence to its original position before his or her next stroke as permitted by Rule 8.1c (Avoiding Penalty by Restoring Improved Conditions). In such a situation, although Rule 8.1a prohibits moving, bending or breaking the immovable obstruction, the player has the option to take free relief from interference by the part of the immovable obstruction that is leaning onto the course under Rule 16.1b (Relief from Abnormal Course Conditions).

The really odd thing about this is that Phil's ball would have been about 3-4 feet above this grass when it reached the end of the tee box. There is no way in the world that the grass was ever going to interfere with his ball flight. That was a brain-cramp in two parts.
@Dobermanator
@Dobermanator 2 роки тому
How is this even a mystery? If your ball is in 2 foot high grass, are you allowed to tamp down the grass in front of your shot? How is this any different, especially since he's in a tee box and can move the ball for free anywhere within. And if he does not report the violation, his card handed in, anyone can call fowl and in the old days he would be DQ'd. Today, I think they call it the - "The, he did not mean to, and will not mean to do it again, ruling."
@MonsterERB
@MonsterERB 3 роки тому
This is a pretty obvious rules violation. Good job by Phil to call it on himself. (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and not subscribe to any "he did this on purpose, then called it on himself to make himself look better after the US Open debacle where he putted a ball still in motion" theory.) About 90% of the rules of golf can be boiled down to "don't mess around with the golf ball, hit your ball in the same condition as you found it", and "don't mess around with the golf course". There are specific examples of when you are allowed to mess with the ball (i.e. marking/cleaning a ball on the green, ground under repair) or mess with the course (loose impediments not part of the course, repair ball marks on your putting line), and the minutiae of the various rulings and sub-rulings are where it can get confusing.

If you try and alter the pathline of your ball by uprooting or tamping down any natural attached terrain (not loose items), it will be a penalty....pro golfers know this, Phil just had a momentary lapse in judgment, hence him coming clean about it instead of looking like a rank amateur.

I've forgotten more rounds of golf than I'll ever remember, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen this situation from the tee box before... honestly I didn't know which way this would go until the end of the video. "Well you can do that if you re-tee your ball afterwards." What a dumb rule.
@GolfRulesQuestions
@GolfRulesQuestions 3 роки тому
Rule 8.1d

Love to golf, go for fun yet serious. Don’t know all the rules but some are really stupid when they come up! If he can’t put that grass down, then how come many times when I would watch golf on tv I would see a golfer move/pull a blade of grass when he’s putting. What’s in the course stays in the course, don’t matter what, who, when it got there. The course is the course, play it AS IT IS then! I firmly believe if he can’t move that grass, then when leafs fall from a tree and 1 in a million chance it lands on your ball, or if the ball lands under leafs, you should not be able to move it without penalty, that’s the way the course is, play as is.

I have never seen ANYONE do such a thing before. THIS WAS A TELEVISED TOURNAMENT!! He took a one shot penalty if I recall. I don't know the rules.
