anybody else spot the beaver?? Start at 8:30 . Fun footage, but realistically the beaver will have that dam back in action before this guy wakes up in the morning. I've heard they wont reuse sticks from old damns, but that they work so fast it doesn't really matter. The sound of water is like sirens to them.
@justinbell3764Місяць тому
i wonder if a bush axe would be faster...
@DebraJean19621 день тому
Found the beaver though it was hard on my small screen lol
@alisonmiller21518 днів тому
Yup I saw the beaver. And you're right, they don't reuse tree material.
@rustyiron16 днів тому
Beaver float material in to repair the dam, they MIGHT recycle material from above the dam. Rushing water attracts beaver, like a flame does to a moth.
@rustyiron16 днів тому
@@justinbell3764 Depends on what the dam is made of, one log or stick at a time by hand and twigs and grass with a rake. Mud with a rake or shovel.

Hey Johnathan big fan here, I watch guys like you that tear down beaver dams like me TECH 86, strong suggestion, quit let so much go down stream, it will just clog it up down stream, take all your sticks out first, then take your rake and start at both ends of the dam and drag it off the sides the dam will tear itself down,nthe rake should be the last thing you use, try it that way and your dams will be smaller, keep up the good work, Be aware and Be Smart, God Bless
@Quid2005Місяць тому
Whoot-Whoot on the 200!!! And, yes, one of the best! Looks like the beavers have had to extend the length as their dam became more and more effective

Happy 200th video. 🎆🎉🎂 Starting in the middle of the channel and working your way back to the bank would have made more sense. Clearing the dam between yourself and the bank is like sawing at the branch you're sitting on. Also I'm wondering why you don't use hip waders and a spade.

Nice work! That definitely helps that waterway out! Congrats on 200 episodes! Hope your channel blows up soon! I just subscribed and clicked the bell. The whole time I was watching I just kept thinking that it would be best to just use an excavator because that damn is so massive! At least you tore some down and helped drain away the flooded area! A great partial dismantling this day. Excellent water flow. Eventually dropping the water level. See you on the next, Jonathan! 🙂👍🇺🇸
@rustyiron16 днів тому
Concentrate on making ONE breach, keep it narrow deep and long. It is easier to remove a repaired narrow breach than a long rebuild. Everything that you remove from the dam should be removed from the water. The more material removed from the front of the dam makes it easier to remove mud from behind the dam. When opening dams manually it is the depth of the cut not the width of the breach that determines success.

Just a suggestion but the really long beaver dams what go all the way across like this 1 in the video how about doing it as 2 or 3 part video where u go back and open the dam a section at a time untill u have it cleared all the way across so the full dam as been removed eventually
@maxallen-macdonald8791Місяць тому
I echo the congratulations on your 200th video of Fox River Bushcraft. You've done a great job showing the change one man can make. I only wish that some older teens might shadow you on a tour of the river and the streams you've worked on so they too can learn about the local waterways.
@alberteinstein9176Місяць тому
The fastest part of the River is the center which also has the most power because it's deeper. I would of put a whole right in the center of the beaver dam. The edges of a river has drag and slower.
@MagD525 днів тому
@8:40 The beaver jumps out of the den and makes a run for it. Beaver is first seen on the dam, runs over the top, into the water and swims towards the large tree in the background.....also gives the water a big tail slap to show appreciation.

I can't help but notice that you throw the sticks on the river bank so the beavers can find them. Very thoughtful.
@lunalie693820 днів тому
Well, beavers dont reuse sticks or really use ones that are already on the ground afaik
@nicolabjork253319 днів тому
Lunalie's right. Beavers don't use used sticks, since they think they failed the first time. They rebuild dams with new material.
@albertcyphers153219 днів тому
Beavers will not reuse anything they take from the dam

While there are some that need taken out for various reasons, there are others that appreciate the beavers when drought hits in other areas. They tend a large pond by my house. The beavers were transported and rehomed here to manage different places. Once in a while they release some water but for the most part they are left alone. :D We aren't in flat or lowlands so no one cares when they make a dam. lol

Ever have beavers still living in dams you break open?
@weaselsworldМісяць тому
Beavers don't live the dams. They use the dams to raise water levels to submerge the entrance to their lodge, which is a big mound of branches with a hollowed-out center, or a burrow along the shore, if it's in a canal too narrow for a lodge.
