Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft came down in a channel between the port's cruise ship terminals and a causeway that connects Miami to Miami Beach, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. The single-engine Cessna 208 was trying to reach the nearby Miami Seaplane Base, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane overturned and was half submerged. All 7 people inside were safely rescued and did not need medical attention.

The question of the prop turning. The Pratt and Whitney PT-6A turboprop engine would have injected a great deal of water upon landing, snuffing out the combustion in the combustion chambers. When the plane was being towed, the prop was windmilling in the current. Unlike a piston engine, which is nearly impossible to rotate without considerable force, a turbine engine is freewheeling, easily turned by hand or water flowing around the prop. On another YT channel, Paul S has some excellent photos and video of the plane hitting the water and the passengers exiting the plane and standing on the pontoon. The video was taken by a passenger aboard the cruise to the far right of the frame of when the plane crashed.

Maybe not as that prop is turning mighty fast in the tow. Air intake is near the prop to feed the engine. Ask Pratt & Whitney what their thoughts are!

@@megamilyon6111 In this case it was a private boat that got there first, or at least it appeared to be. The police boat on the water didnt eve start moving till the private boat coming in the harbor was almost there.

Seriously. Amazing emergency response, the absolute best place to have to do an emergency landing. Reminds me of Captain Sully landing in the Hudson River near the ferry terminal -- there was similarly a massive immediate response to that water landing. These pilots know what they're doing.

He landed with a fairly strong tailwind. You can see the windsock at the seaplane basin was fully extended which indicates a 15+ knot/17+ mph wind. There was also a good deal of wave action in the bay at the time. High landing speed due to a strong tailwind combined with moderate waves caused the right side float to collapse.

Is that a designated landing area? 1:00 The plane enters the harbor airspace 1:23 It touches (splashes) down 1:42 The pilot guns one last time but the prop's in the drink 2:08 (video break) 2:11 Officer returns from siesta In a previous lifetime, I worked the Lake Patrol team (an extension of the Lifeguard team) at a very large, high profile resort with a couple lakes, wildlife and water fowl, and water craft rentals. What could possibly go wrong? Point being: I think I have some standing to ask, "WTF was the water patrol doing?" Thanks Wavy, good stuff.

As an old seaplane pilot, It look from a distance like the float was intact. The access hatch or hatches popped open and the compartments flooded, causing that side to sink. The left float kept the plane boyant. Probably a 1-2 million dollar plane. Just the floats alone are really expensive!

@@Airplanefishyou obviously do not know anything about airplanes. The avionics are toast! The engines are toast going under water and in salt water at that ! You know nothing about the effects of corrosion on an airframe!

@TheFalconJetDriver the engine can be removed and replaced along with all the accessories. The Avionics and wiring can be removed and replaced. The aluminum on that plane has probably been sprayed with corrosion X. Only the right wing, aileron, flap and part of the fuselage were under water. Remove interior and all panels then flush with fresh water. The control cables are stainless. The sheet metal is not damaged from impact. That plane is worth alot. Those are also whipair floats. With retracts.

I had just boarded the NCL ship that it landed next to and caught the crash from the upper pool deck, shit was crazy looking. That plane landed hard I'm surprised no one got hurt.

PT6 turbine engine props freespool when the engine stops. The action of towing it backward in the water is turning the blades.

The prop is turning because of water movement. Somebody commented earlier upon the difference between an engine of this type and a normal piston engine and why it would spin as it was being towed.

This is a Cessna Caravan. It uses a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6 gas turbine engine, there are no pistons. It is a free turbine design, which means that a small jet engine [gas generator] blows against a turbine, and the shaft from that turbine through a reduction gearbox turns the propellor. When it is shut off you can reach up and easily turn the prop with your hands, so the spinning prop is probably from the water passing by. Normally, free-turbine turboprops like this revert to the full feathered position when oil pressure is lost. Obviously, the airplane is a complete loss-

It’s commonly called a turboprop not a gas generator, but yes it’s a P&W PT6A with 675 hp.

That PT6 was still running. Maybe the pilot wanted the electricity from its generator to power a pump or maybe they just panicked and got out and left it running.

What the [censored] was the caption of the indicated [police?] boat doing, sleeping ? Any competant caption should have been aware of the plane before it crashed. It's called situational/environmental awareness. They should be aware of EVERYTHING that's going on around their boat at ALL times. Failure to be aware could put their ship in danger at any moment.

No clue. I zoomed in on a screen grab and all I could make it was something blocky in shape moving right to left. Appears to be a plane and not a helicopter (there is a helicopter on the left hovering, blackish or reddish).

I scrolled through and didn’t see anyone answer your question about the prop. That aircraft is a turboprop so the prop can windmill. Right after touching down I’m sure the pilot cut the throttle and shut off the fuel!

when the airplane is lifted by the crane you can see the landing gear is extended, which is not what you want when landing on water, gear up until you slow then gear down to taxi up the boat ramp

If you're the third or fourth etc boat to reach an accident scene and other craft are already taking off survivors, it's not helping to send in a big steep wake which could dislodge or swamp survivors or cause a hazard to the rescuers, their boat or even sink the accident craft.
