I’m team “not to have boxwood hedge”. Just not a look that I prefer. I think your romance country garden plan works much better with your lovely property. Just my opinion. ❤

Be cautious of boxwood moths, blight, etc. Maybe they’re not prevalent in your area but certainly where I am I’m starting to replace yew bushes instead of using boxwood.🌷🇨🇦

I have a number of boxwood hedges and am surprised by the rate of growth. They grow faster than expected and are really a pain to trim. Without placing a cloth to catch the trimmed leaves clean up is tedious.

And I think boxwoods would take up too much space and you need space in your shade garden for all those wonderful plants waiting to be owned!

I'm in favor of the shade garden being romantic country. Personally I think a formal hedge would look out of place in your garden because it would be the only formal part. It's your garden so don't feel obligated to do what Michael or anyone suggests you do.

Your shade garden is looking so pretty; the bruneras have really come on, and look soft and dainty, especially when contrasted with the hostas. Janey, no disrespect to Mr Glassman, but that space calls for a really soft and gentle planting style, with lots of aquilegias (think you call them columbines in America), haconechloas grasses spilling over the edges, astrantias, lady’s mantles and all manner of shade loving, soft perennials. I think a boxwood hedge would make this lovely relaxed space too formal and a bit austere. And no, you definitely don’t need any more heucheras -as lovely as they are! 😂 Too many other plants clamouring for attention, such as thalictrums, which would look gorgeous against that white wall. The list is endless! Perhaps you could plant a boxwood hedge around the circle area, at the end of the shade garden, which would frame it nicely, and perhaps even extend it to your checkered patio. I'm going to chime in here and say NO to boxwood. It's just not your style and I agree about the soft and gentle look. I also suggest ferns for that shaded garden. I have them in my shade garden and love the look. That would fill in some of those blank places very nicely.

Well done Janey & Jason 😍 I’m thinking a boxwood hedge would make the space look very narrow, then with what you’re adding to the trellises and arches, it would feel claustrophobic when walking/sitting in that area. Remember country romance Janey 😉 private yet airy and light.

Wouldn't it better to grow vines up trellises rather than growing on the house. It may look nice but I've heard negatives comments about growing on walls of the houses. The garden is really coming along! Looks Great!!!

If planting small/dwarf boxwoods keeping trimmed in a sphere shape not actual hedge form would look very nice with your shaded perennials behind or among them.😊 Having boxwoods on property will have green and interest all four seasons plus less maintenance. Happy Gardening!

I think you should go with the country romance theme in the secret garden. Boxwoods would take more upkeep keeping them trimmed as a hedge.

What if you did a boxwood ball in each of the four interior corners next to the seating and fountain area? It would add some winter interest and just a bit of structure without overwhelming the area.

Have you thought of “supply outposts” ? I have a large mailbox (with decorative mailbox cover) that contains spare tape measure, spare secateurs, Phillips screwdriver, regular screwdriver, spare gloves ( in airtight box to bugs out), plant ties, folding razor and anything else small you might need when away from main storage. Oh, and trowel!! Doesn’t have to be mailbox, that just easier solution for me. Just a thought . . .

Love seeing your garden develop. I like your Country Romance idea better than formal English Garden. I don’t think you really have room for hedges and they would be more work to keep trimmed. Go with Hostas and ferns.

No boxwood! All the trimming and maintenance. Plus wouldn’t you want to be surrounded by all those beautiful lush plants instead of a stiff formal garden. I think it would blend in better with the rest of your garden. Maybe throw the boxwoods around your patio in front…

Maybe instead of a boxwood hedge you could just put them in the inside corners. Keep them in spheres . So 4 in front of fountain and 4 in the corners at entrance circle area.

I love what you've done so far! I think a short boxwood hedge in the shade garden would be lovely, but I'm not sure it goes well with the granite walkway. Boxwood goes better with formal paving, I think. Maybe it's better to allow plants to naturally soften the edges of the walkway and keep the space casual. A hedge would add another level of maintenance, too, so unless you love them, I'd carry on without. The heuchera looks great!

I agree, no hedge! With a beautiful path like that, it feels fitting to have perennials and ground covers spilling out of the boarders onto the path to create a lot naturalistic boarderless look

Maybe add some boxwood shrubs in the 4 corners at the square border near the fountain or boxwood topiaries (😍) somewhere in there but not a formal hedge. It would be too formal for your country setting. All in all a beautiful start on your new property. Love watching you guys working together to create the home/garden of your dreams❣️

Boxwood would look nice but also would add a lot of maintenance and contrition. Janey, if you want the look of English garden, go for it! On the other hand if you really want the freedom of Cal-country romance with a touch of industrial, then find some lamium or or low shade plant and line the edges to create a sense of secret garden with luscious mess and the feeling of just being in a green dream…you just got to decide what will complete your vision!!😊😊😊

Janey, you can have both. I love my boxwoods! They are the one shrub that is so low maintenance in my garden. They tolerate the heat, the cold, and the squirrels ignore them. Plant your romantic flowers behind the boxwood hedge which is what I have done. The hedge just makes everything neat and tidy and in no way takes away from the softness of my other plants. Just prune your boxwoods with rounded edges. Just drop the word formal and everyone will relax.

I love the idea of English garden, it already has that vibe with the fountain and the iron patio and the vining walls set-up. Plus you talked about adding topiary too. I think it would elevate the space and challenge you to learn how to do another type of design. I can already see it added in there, it would be so beautiful. I think you would be glad you stepped out of your comfort zone if you try it. I think Michael Glassman has a beautiful eye for garden design. I would trust him and do it!

I just received your hats and already used the tan/blue trucker cap today. Perfect timing as I'll see my BFF next week and gift her the mauve one for her birthday. She and her daughter are planning a plant sale so I definitely want to pick out some from her collection. Her property is even larger than yours and on a big lake in the Twin Cities (Minnetonka). We're both recovering plant collectors. Well, me more recovering than she. I've been retired from Target 🎯 Marketing ten years, but remember when buyers would introduce exciting new lines at our meetings. I only "grow" silk flowers indoors. ☺️

I'm not that keen on the boxwood hedge...especially with the heucheras. Some lovely ferns, toad lilies (tricyrtis), hardy geraniums (Rosanne, Bill Wallis), acorus, spider plants with reverse variegation, would be nice. Hellebores are beautiful but not good for dogs if they nibble on them. Some azaleas would be nice here and there. Also, more hakonechloa (Japanese forest grass) in various colors would be really striking! Your beautiful brunneras reminded me that I should find a few for my shade gardens. You will love your shade garden as an oasis from the heat in summer. Also fatshedera are nice in shade and add a little height and bold foliage. So exciting to watch this garden take shape!

I must be honest im obsessed with boxwood.. make the shade secret room something different like a surprise when you walk through something different. I’m team go for it! If not a box hedge then at least consider the 4 corners to be spheres - there is something magical about English cottage gardens

What about placing boxwoods sporadically in your gardens .. very in keeping with romantic feel but not quite as formal. The dense evergreen would look beautiful amongst the flowers and shrubs. 🌺🍃

My mom did this in her gardens. Added a touch of formality and structure to her otherwise very romantic arrangements. She did prune them but didn’t shape them like topiaries or balls.

Was watching your coffee talk, we had three acres and loved are stock tank pool. All four of us could sit in it. I could even put two chaise lounges in it to cool off. Was so easy to make. Don’t paint! We had it three years was great, I saw a video about painting-did proper etch, prime, paint and it still peeled a year later and was a mess. You can even buy an inflatable hot tub and hook its pump/heater up and it turns it into a hot tub.

We kept net hanging near it, scooped out leaves or bugs, kept it covered with in insulated bubble top cheap on Amazon (I’m in Colorado and cold nights) and had the chlorine tabs we dropped in this little thing that floated in it. Used it May through September. Drained it through plug, flipped it over during winter until we did the hot tub thing. Once or twice had to test it and add some extra chlorine or borax. We got a lot of use out of it.

Great choice on the false hydrangeas! I planted them on three of the four exterior walls of my home. They are awesome! The oldest one really took off last year and is well on its way to covering the front wall. When it gets to a window or the eaves, I simply prune it back, no problem. I think you'll find you won't need the wires. You're going to love them!

Don't feel bad about your tape measure - I lost my trowel, and think it might have been dumped into our garbage company's compost bin! That led me to have to buy another one, but actually the new one is even better. It is a Corona "transplanter," which means that one side of it is serrated, which is great to cutting roots, and the other side is smooth, plus it is slimmer than a regular trowel, so it can get into tight places much easier. It also has a padded ergonomic handle with a finger guard. I sure love those Heucheras are gorgeous! I find their little flowers rather magical-looking. Since you asked, I love the country romance theme throughout your property better than a totally separate room with boxwoods. I read that dwarf boxwoods only grow 1/2" - 1" a year. It would probably be easier to wait for the one climbing hydrangia than an entire boxwood border. Btw, was Monty eating the wood chips??

I love the shade garden! I'm a no on the boxwood too! I feel like if you were going to do that it should have been done first and the rest of the garden designed around it. Keep adding plants you love, not plants you feel obligated to plant!

Hi Janey Erin the Impatient Gardener has a Climbing Hydrangea those take forever to takeoff, but I think the False Hydrangeas grows a bit faster as you can see you have blooms already! 🤞

Hey Janey, everything looks beautiful! A lot of progress in a short amount of time! 😮 One suggestion I have from a design perspective would be to make the area where the table and chairs are larger and centered under the window. I think the window would be a nice anchor/backdrop. Just a thought!

Love the false hydrangea idea!! I have a retaining wall with a giant crack (it’s an old house) and we’ve patched it several times and it just wants to show. This is a great solution!!!

I love lungwort! It adds such a different look in my deep shade areas. And I also love Bleeding Heart but I don't know if those grow well in a California zone.

Hi Janey…. FYI… make sure you get boxwoods that are resistant to boxwood blight and spider mites…. I just had an invasion? Had to cut my boxwoods way back…. They are in the front of my house and I’m so sad.. they are bald with just a few a new leaves on them.🥰🌺🦋 I think Linda Vater uses “Better Boxwoods”.💐

Linda Vater said she regrets doing a formal hedge all around her potager. If she had done another one, she said she would have only put boxwood at corners of it and not completely outlining it. Maybe put a boxwood just in the corners of the beds. We have a sandbox for our dogs to dig in. That seems to satisfy their urge to dig and they don't dig around the rest of the yard.

Janey, the shade garden is shaping up beautifully! Not sure if these grow well in your area, but consider a yew hedge instead of boxwood. They perform great in partial shade and deep shade. And (at least in my area - metro Detroit) they aren't bothered by pests. I have both boxwood hedges and yew hedges in my gardens that are about 25 years old. The yew hedge doesn't get berries (poisonous to pets and kids) and is about 2.5 ft high. Requires a once yearly trim - very low maintenance.

No boxwoods. I think 💭 the boxwoods would take away from your beautiful flowers. That’s all you would see when you look into the garden. I like the country romance theme. Flowers spilling over the borders would be a nice addition. JMHO. 😊

Plant boxwood now and by end of next season you will have a hedge. Plant 1ft apart. You’ll love them.

Thank you both, I have been growing Hydrangeas for over 40 years and didn’t know there were climbing ones. Now I’m looking at the back yard trying to find a spot for one. Green Acres sound have them. Enjoy these moments together 🌻🌻

Love heuchera! I usually grow them in pots but one variety faded away so I threw it to the back of one of my garden beds. And it thrived there! What?!? Lol.

I get Michaels concept of a boxwood border-lots of charm. But I also agree that liriope or other would be faster and create same effect. I say go for it.

Beautiful! Maybe instead of a boxwood edge, add a few round boxwood to start with around the corners where you just placed the heucheras! i think it would be very pretty and less maintenance! What i dislike about a long edge is that if a few are not doing well… it ruins the whole look… But i can definitely see a few trimed round boxwoods to add structure and year round interest!

You can have a country romance side garden and NOT doing boxwood hedge, which can get wider than your space allots, but who am I…lol Michael Glassman is an expert…I love the way you’re developing it so far.
