If you can't afford a mini baler, don't have enough land to warrant getting one, or can't find anyone willing to come and do a small hay field for you, you can always resort to this plastic bin baling method.
With someone piling the hay next to you, it's possible to get it down to 5 minutes per bale. For the record, we made 68 bales from the quarter acre - a mix of rye grass, timothy grass and white clover. This year is the third year and so far the most productive - all fertilised by Barty and Harold the Pilgrim geese that make an appearance. Penny the Newf cross had nothing to do with it whatsoever.

That is very clever! If anyone where they live, can just add another bin from their respective refuse company for a short period, that will save a lot of the upfront cost of having to buy a bin.

Pretty neat! Great Idea! Wonder how u'd make out lining the barrel with a drop in heavy duty Garbage bag or 2? Just pack it full using ur ladder packing method or a weighted piece of plywood cut out in a square or circle depending on the shape of the barrel with a makeshift handle on it for insertion and extraction in and out of the barrel.. Pack it using that, so there's no to risk falling off the ladder or etc,.. Gather the top of the bag/ tie it off using twist ties or etc then just pull the bag out/might have to anchor the barrel to the ground. Wallah! Now u have a packaged waterproof bagged bale that u can bring in the barn as required. Bale is self contained in bag. Just lay it on its side. No worries about getting wet from rain or snow. If u have limited storage room u could leave them outdoors. Maybe under a weighted or anchored tarp for extra protection. U could use that method to make haylage or even silage if u have a wood chipper or some other chopping method.

Nice ideas! We're lucky we have enough space for what we need, but I can imagine leaving a few out for easy access could be useful!

Brilliant! We're in the same situation...hay field too small for those with haying equipment to bother with whilst large enough to produce all the hay we would need for winter, so I'll certainly be giving the bin bailing method a go. Cheers!

+Regency Lass Glad it's useful! I had it down to about six or seven minutes per bail by the end, and ended up with 68 bales. It was hard work, but there really was no other option other than bagging. We'd bagged for previous two years, but these bales are equvalent to around six refuse sacks, so they take up much less space when storing. One thing I will say, I ended up cutting the fingers off the ends of an old pair of leather work gloves, otherwise the hay cuts get pretty nasty on the hands. The missing finger tips mean you can still handle the twine. It'd be good to hear how you get on if you do it!

Happy Smallholder Thanks :) We cut it using a 4' (120cm) scythe cutter bar on our old 2-wheel tractor, seen here last year ukposts.info/have/v-deo/pqWhe4Ghn6aeunk.html Over winter we store it in a shed belonging to the farm next door - nice and dry :)

I think I got it down to about 15 minutes a bale, without about twenty bales in total, so about five hours. A good day with a break for lunch and tidying up 😁👍 Since then we've got a little Fergie, but no baler attachment yet.

I grew up on my dad's dairy farm . Your bales look pretty nice without an actual hay baler . We have no tractor or mower . Can the hay be cut by hand or a durable grass mower ? . We are in a hot climate with a long growing season and very little rain so we definitely have time for old fashion muscle and leisure
@MerrybowerUk
@MerrybowerUk 2 роки тому
Hey there! You could certainly scythe it if you wanted to do it all by hand. I imagine the stalks need to be quite tall to bind together, so mowing might make them too short to work properly. We don't have a 'proper' tractor either, but we did pick up this two wheeled tractor which has a cutter bar attachment: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/mWJjnaZrfpirtKM.html Good luck!

I'm all for private individuals doing this for their enjoyment and purposes, but there needs to be a better way. That was a fair bit of time for one loosely packed bale.
@MerrybowerUk
@MerrybowerUk Рік тому
Not really sure what point you're trying to make. It's pretty obvious I'm a private individual. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but using this method I was able to finish a bale every 9 minutes, without the time spent talking to the camera. By hand, no machinery to buy or maintain. This technique is actually derived from the pine straw hand baling method, which has been used for years. Find me a better way to bale on this small scale, I'm all ears.

Not a bad idea, but you'd have to remove it in order to tie the ends of twine together - I found it easier to just stand on it, no need to get out of the bin again :)

You'd be displacing your weight and getting far less compaction. Better off jumping on it if you want a solid bale.
