@Gunner Bussell If you like, you can take the following poem to your teacher... Dorothy; pigtails and ruby slippers, she trims an emerald hedge with the Wizard's token clippers. Dorothy's farm and the perfect summer at its zenith; a welcome sublime; delightful birdsong with... a sporadic tinkle of wind-chime. Suddenly, the girl's clad with distress; she points towards the yard and yells: "Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!" By the barn door stands a young boy, ten and not much more. He says, ever so sweetly; almost in song: "Swisser Swatter! Swisser Swatter! Like the black between the stars; it doesn't matter!" Low and behold; it's Seamus Heaney; drowning little kittens in a bucket of water. He soon finds his temple within Dorothy's shade, her conscience hollow and eyes ablaze. She looks upon the fur afloat on the water, and says: "Little boy! Little boy! A poet should know better! And what's good for the goose is also good for the..." Oh, the horror! The horror! -Back From Oz by Conal Cochran

To all the kids writing essays - a few things to talk about: - intertextuality. She quotes and invokes MANY other writers and speakers including; Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), Maya Angelou (Still I Rise), MLK (I Have A Dream, when she lists the areas of the country). This contributes to the feeling of anchored, unified optimism in the poem. - collective nouns. She constantly uses “we”, “our” and “us”. She is speaking to, and for, ALL of us, not just for herself. No ‘I’ in this poem. - the style of writing and performance feels fresh and current, but it is actually rooted in the most ancient form of literature there is, bardic poetry. She uses methods like alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme, metaphor and a musical delivery. These are all things found in ancient poems like Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf. These were stories made to be performed, not read. The purpose was to entertain, but also to unify people around a communal sense of identity and heritage. She is tapping into something very old and deep inside all of us. Hope that was useful! From a geeky English teacher :)

Very helpful and insightful, but I just wanted to know what you mean by "most ancient form of literature there is". The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest known epic. If you mean in poetry (if that's the appropriate word to use), I'm sure there's African, Asian, or even other European based forms of literature that are older. I'm not as informed as you are which is likely why I'm so confused.

@proverbalizer
@proverbalizer 3 роки тому
hmmmm, 22 is not all that young, college graduate age already...the way everyone's been talking I thought she was like 17 or something. I can remember the seriousness of the 10- minute-straight rap masterpiece I wrote about the whole history and current state of affairs of the African diaspora at that age (before I knew about breaking things down into reasonably sized verses and choruses lol). Was super deep, but much more, ummm, let's say anti-status quo and far less patriotic. They would've cut the cameras if I recited it at a presidential inauguration, LMAO. Am curious to see what this young woman has to say in her previous (and future) poems though, when she doesn't have to try to make her message palatable to everyone. Definitely very talented!

"The Hill We Climb" When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry, a sea we must wade We've braved the belly of the beast We've learned that quiet isn't always peace And the norms and notions of what just is Isn’t always just-ice And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it Somehow we do it Somehow we've weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken but simply unfinished We the successors of a country and a time Where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one And yes we are far from polished far from pristine but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect We are striving to forge a union with purpose To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us but what stands before us We close the divide because we know, to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another We seek harm to none and harmony for all Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: That even as we grieved, we grew That even as we hurt, we hoped That even as we tired, we tried That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious Not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree And no one shall make them afraid If we’re to live up to our own time Then victory won’t lie in the blade But in all the bridges we’ve made That is the promise to glade The hill we climb If only we dare It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into and how we repair it We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy And this effort very nearly succeeded But while democracy can be periodically delayed it can never be permanently defeated In this truth in this faith we trust For while we have our eyes on the future history has its eyes on us This is the era of just redemption We feared at its inception We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter To offer hope and laughter to ourselves So while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be A country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation Our blunders become their burdens But one thing is certain: If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left with Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west, we will rise from the windswept northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states, we will rise from the sunbaked south We will rebuild, reconcile and recover and every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge, battered and beautiful When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid The new dawn blooms as we free it For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it If only we’re brave enough to be it

@@Jakaviusful She lacks the skill and drive to be an icon. The Hill We Climb...I was writing lines like that when I was in high school for crying out loud. In order to be a poet, one must master the word and esoteric like a carriage driver masters a horse. Here's an example: Dorothy; pigtails and ruby slippers, she trims an emerald hedge with the Wizard's token clippers. Dorothy's farm and the perfect summer at its zenith; a welcome sublime; delightful birdsong with... a sporadic tinkle of wind-chime. Suddenly, the girl's clad with distress; she points towards the yard and yells: "Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness!" By the barn door stands a young boy; ten and not much more. She looks at the fur afloat on the water, and says: "Little boy! Little boy! A poet should know better! And what's good for the goose is also good for the..." Oh, the horror! @immortal scurds you may or not be a racist but if you can't see that there is hatred and racism that must be crushed then you are not helping. You don't want peace you want things to be like it use to be. Trump voters are looking for America in a rear view mirror. Those who voted for Biden Harris are looking forward through the windshield. With that view we as a Nation will achieve liberty and Justice for all. Have a wonderful year.

I respect your right to your opinion, but come on, if even this Dutch dude knows more about him then you quickly googled, I feel really sorry for you, your fellow Americans and your educational system.. Enjoy your life in the divided states of America. You guys don't seem to notice that the VS used to be a respected friend of ours, but that respect is as good as gone in Europe.. If anyone wants the entire poem: When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry, a sea we must wade We've braved the belly of the beast We've learned that quiet isn't always peace And the norms and notions of what just is Isn't always just-ice And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it Somehow we do it Somehow we've weathered and witnessed a nation that isn't broken but simply unfinished We the successors of a country and a time Where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one And yes we are far from polished far from pristine but that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect We are striving to forge a union with purpose To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us but what stands before us We close the divide because we know, to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another We seek harm to none and harmony for all Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: That even as we grieved, we grew That even as we hurt, we hoped That even as we tired, we tried That we'll forever be tied together, victorious Not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree And no one shall make them afraid If we're to live up to our own time Then victory won't lie in the blade But in all the bridges we've made That is the promise to glade The hill we climb If only we dare It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it's the past we step into and how we repair it We've seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy And this effort very nearly succeeded But while democracy can be periodically delayed it can never be permanently defeated In this truth in this faith we trust For while we have our eyes on the future history has its eyes on us This is the era of just redemption We feared at its inception We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter To offer hope and laughter to ourselves So while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be A country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation Our blunders become their burdens But one thing is certain: If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children's birthright So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left with Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west, we will rise from the windswept northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states, we will rise from the sunbaked south We will rebuild, reconcile and recover and every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge, battered and beautiful When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid The new dawn blooms as we free it For there is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it If only we're brave enough to be it

You will remember the name, Conal Cochran. Here, let me explain... And there, by a fluffy rainbow, we'll prance and dawdle; skip our way, hand in hand, down a candy path and splash about in a neon puddle. That's right, Sweetie; let's have a bubbly giggle and laugh about how we rolled cotton clouds across a raspberry sky; licked a lolly sun and learned to fly among marshmallow birds in soda-pop rain and picked bubblegum flowers on a chocolate plain. Eemmmmmm, wasn't that nice, Sweetie? Now let's do that again! -Beksinski Banished by Conal Cochran

Today, I felt inspired to read and listen to "The Hill We Climb," and now I am literally crying with tears in my eyes. I don't cry at many things, but I am crying as the words of this poem resonate within me. With all of the disease, division, and death of last year and this one, this poem is quite timely. Thank you, Amanda, for this poem that you have given as a gift to the world. Thank you for voicing all of the feelings we've felt over these years in particular. Thank you. Much love to you!

Analysis of “The hill we climb” - Amanda Gorman. Summary “The Hill We Climb”, is an inauguration poem recited on January 6th, 2021 by the 22-year-old Amanda Gorman. In the poem, she speaks upon a lot of the ongoing problems in America. Also, what it really means to be an American. In front of millions of people, she stood up and highlighted some of the problems in which America has been through and is eventually going to meet. How we have become more divided, and how there should be a place for everyone. How we should strive for a more united nation, she also mentions chooses to mention racism here and there. To sum it all up in one sentence: “But that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge a union with purpose.” Analytical poem “But while democracy can be periodically delayed it can never be permanently defeated.” Here she is talking about how Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential race, and Donald Trump not wanting to accept the results of the election. He suggested postponing the election and have reelection since he thought that that increased postal voting could essentially lead to fraud and inaccurate results. The sentence was also a direct message to the violent mob that attacked Congress not too long ago. This all happened because of Donald Trump, telling his supports they should fight like hell if they want to win “their” country back. She was basically telling all the angry Trump supporters: No matter what you do, democracy will always prevail. “To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man.” In her poem, she chooses to put some focus on racism, and she even mentions it a few times. This is, to say the least, a very controversial topic, however, it is something that deserves attention and to is pointed out since a lot of the racism also comes from the US government. Also, a lot of African Americans still believe they are being suppressed so it is a good way to appeal to a bigger audience. She also mentions herself as an example, maybe for pointing out how much the US has changed. And that for maybe only 40 years ago she would not have been allowed to be reciting for the US president because of her skin color. “We must first put our differences aside.” America has the most ethnicities in the world; however, Americans are also getting more divided. This also goes economically wise, because while the rich people are getting richer, the poor people, on the other hand, are getting left behind in a struggling society. She chose to not talk about climate change and such because this poem was more directed at the people. I also think she chose not to include it since Joe Bidden already has a lot, no reason to beat a dead horse. “We will rebuild, reconcile and recover.” It means that America is in a need of a change if they ever wish to develop as a people and a nation. To reconcile the people and rebuild the country as well as rethink their priorities. Examples of alliterations: She says “we” a lot of times, actually, more than 8% of her entire speech is the word “we”. She also mentions “We will” 10 times. You can really hear how she tries to push out the idea that we are all in this together. Every time she refers to the American people it is by saying “We”. This also adds to her pathos, making it sound like they are all in this together. To conclude, I think that Amanda succeeded in getting her message across in the right way. First of all because of the right methods she used to deliver her poem. She utilized the right techniques/words correctly and talked politically well too. Nothing sounded too off, and all in all I really liked it. If I had to critique the poem it would have to be, I do not like how she mentions her past. It is interesting nonetheless that does not make it relevant. Ps. Here is my assignment I wrote this myself yesterday, it's 100% Original so don't worry. For all the people that need help, I got you. Love you all. Please don't copyright this comment took me hours to make From: - Yukkiv2
