Cokolwiek. Ludzie, wyjdźcie ze swojej bańki. Nie wszyscy są tacy jak TY albo jak większość procent społeczeństwa. Obecnie mam już prawie 14 lat, a czytając komentarze mam wrażenie jakbym była tu jedną ze starszych. Nie trujcie, jak nie rozumiecie. Dobranoc.

Polacy boją się mówić w innych językach. Pomijam inny poziom nauki wiele lat temu i teraz, ale nadal ludzie boją się odezwać, bo ktoś ich wyśmieje (inni Polacy), że tak kiepsko mówi po angielsku. Wystarczy jeden kontakt z nacjami innymi niż z natywnym angielskim i czar pryska. Okazuje się, że Niemcy, Francuzi, Turcy, Włosi, Hiszpanie... itd. nie mówią od nas lepiej po angielsku. Nawet Skandynawowie, którzy teoretycznie angielski znają dobrze nie są dużo dalej, może jedyny wyjątek to Holendrzy. Polska szkoła zbyt duży nacisk kładzie na regułki zamiast na mówienie.

To be honest, I become really grateful when I meet someone who's interested in the Polish language, considering it's simply a country in Europe that other countries aren't particularly familiar with, so teaching another person who's fascinated and interested in the culture and language, I feel honoured. :)

I learned Polish not through any formal teachers but just from everyday life. Before I could speak Polish though ONE particular word/question sufficed: 'party?' - uttered with a smile! Mixing with Poles after teaching English all day. During parties at clubs, student dorms and above all people's homes. Avoiding the English language and native speakers. Above all making friends with Poles who COULDN'T speak a word of English. That was the key! The problem was many Poles didn't want to speak Polish with you, precisely because they wanted to learn English! How I remember struggling with case endings and declension! The best was 'genetive'. I liked the fact that in Polish you pronounce the words as they are written. Once you learn the sounds of the Polish alphabet you can basically read anything without even understanding it! Not so in English. Think of 'thorough, silhouette' etc. Polish tenses are much more simplified than the 16 or so English. Also no articles like 'a/an/the' to worry about. Progress was slow and gradual. It took me 2-3 years to learn enough that I could communicate in a basic way.

Jako Polacy nie do końca zdajemy sobie sprawę, z tego jak łatwo nam Polakom uczyć się też innych języków. W angielskim nie ma przypadków czy skomplikowanej odmiany czasowników ani rodzajów. Dlatego im jest bardzo ciężko w ogóle zrozumieć gramatykę hiszpańską czy niemiecką. Tak samo wymowa. Niemiecka czy hiszpańska jest bardziej podobna do polskiej niż do angielskiej. Tak naprawdę znając polski w trudności języka, którego się uczymy, możemy iść głównie w dół.

As a Pole living in Norway, and currently mastering Norwegian language, I can easily say that Poles has unique ability to learn different languages very fast and efficiently. Most likely because of how hard our language is, and our ability to mimic sounds. Based on that, there is no problem with learning words, and mimicking accents from other countries, that could be a challenge for an English speaker.

I love learning Polish, but its sooo frustrating

Polish language is a great tester to check whether you are Polish or not. I knew one Ukrainian girl who has spent her entire life, except early childhood, in Poland and I could still trace a slight eastern accent in her speech. Due to difficult grammar it is also easy to spot a Russian or Ukrainian troll on the internet writing comments in Polish :-P

Seriously, Polish names and surnames are probably the most butchered especially by folks speaking western languages. Average English speaking person will have little problem (assuming a little good will) pronouncing most Russian, Czech. Slovak even Lithuanian or Romanian names, but when it comes to Polish they're not even trying. Perfecting following sounds: cz, sz, ch, ż, rz, ą, ę, and a couple more will make you sound like an expert compared to 99% of people even if thats all the polish you know and its easier then you think. cz = (ch)eck ch = (h)ave sz = ambu(sh) ż/rz = [french] (j)e t'aime - everyone knows the sound

I love this video! Many people talk about the Polish language being difficult almost with contempt - how dare you Poles to speak like that! In your words, on the contrary, I perceive a kind of reverend awe and even admiration. Thank you for your courage! As a Finn I actually find the grammar very logical (I think most non-Latin/Germanic-based languages have similar features in Europe), but the pronunciation makes everything much more complicated. Even compared to Russian there are way more exceptional rules and some vowels that have disappeared from every other Slavic language. I usually end up pronouncing Polish like Russian or Ukrainian and people in Poland often say my accent is what the Poles in their former Eastern territories used to have :)

Let's cool it a bit with how difficult Polish is. I was able to speak it fluently, with a decent vocabulary, by the age of four. So you see, even a child can master it, and very quickly, too. : ) Also - the "impossible" Polish grammar is actually based very closely on the Latin grammar. A year or two ago I heard an interview on Polskie Rradio with an English poet (a true, Anglo-Saxon Englishman) with an interest in Polish poetry, in Polish. I was astonished how good his Polish was - with an almost perfect pronounciation, and a tremendous vocabulary. When I went to college in Warsaw in the late 70s, there were foreign students from the US, France, Finland, etc. (not many, but some) studying in Warsaw,. All of them learned to speak Polish very well indeed, just with a faint trace of a foreign accent.

Tyle, że polski jest bardziej poetycki od angielskiego, ma mnóstwo frazeologizmów itp... I przecież nikt nie uczy się końcówek na pamięć nawet jak poznaje jakieś nowe słówko (najczęściej naukowe) odmiana przez przypadki jest dla nas oczywista bo mamy z tym doczynienia od dziecka... A ci co mylą końcówki częściej niż powinni są najzwyczajniej w świecie niezbyt bystrzy :) z autopsji wiem że Anglicy robią jeszcze więcej błędów szczególnie w zapisie ponieważ ich język jest nielogiczny u nas każda głoska brzmi tak samo w angielskim często różne słowa maja takie same zakonczenia, różnią się na przykład tylko paoczątkową literą a wymawia się na zupełnie inaczej... Yeah, polish is one of the hardest languages in the world. Grammar is.. oaahh grammar is freakin' hard. But historical polish grammar .... no comment. How things like that would ever come into being... i have no idea, but I love my language

An interesting and well-done video. I am starting to learn Polish now and I can confirm that it is indeed difficult. I am a Czech native, which helps me so much because many of the grammar principles and concepts are similar if not the same, but it is still challenging - despite the CZ/PL parallels - to master the Polish pecularities and "false friends" - similar or even identical words as in CZ, yet with a completely different meaning. Anyway, thanks for the video. Well done!

First, serdecznie dziekuje za napisy! A sincere thank you for the captions. Being able to READ and hear the target language at the same time makes comprehension easier AND makes the information more likely to sink in without any additional effort. I do have a question. I've studied French, Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, Polish, ASL, and Esperanto. While Polish grammar is by far the most complicated of any of these languages, it is also the MOST REGULAR. Even the irregularities have patterns, lol. Learn a given rule and you apply it. That's it. You're done. What I want to know is why NOBODY seems to mention this. I've watched many vids from both Polish and English speakers about Polish and NOBODY talks about it. WHY? By way of background, I've a degree in teaching ESL and have 20+ years experience. I was brought up with enough Polish that I internalized the pronunciation and grammar well enough that people tend to think my Polish is far better than it actually is. I'm just curious as to everyone's thought on this. Thank you.

Next time you do interviews with Polish teachers, could you please ask what they'd suggest to a Polish parent living in the US whose teenage kids say they'd like to learn Polish (to be able to communicate with their Polish grandparents living in Poland), but who give up within a minute after a lesson starts? (Other than that, please, please do learn how to pronounce Dorota (and other first names) the Polish way. After all, youdo use proper pronunciation when you talk about places (Warszawa, Krakow, etc.).)

i am polish but we moved to ireland when i was 2 or 3 , i can speak fluent polish and my grammer is very good in spoken polish most the time but i cannot write in polish for the life of me but i can read but it usually takes a while because i try to sound it out and then i know what the word is , anyway one day i plan to re-learn polish somewhat

I was lucky to have an AMAZING English teacher in middle school (so when I was 12-14 years old) and a mother who's also an English teacher - both have great pronounciation and are very good at their job, so from a young age I was able to listen to English, become accustomed to the sound of it and learn many words before starting school. Thanks to these two I became a fluent speaker at the age of 15, right now I'm 16 and pretty proud of my skills, although I'm still quite unsure of my pronounciation - not because I think it's wrong but rather because I tend to get tongue tied even speaking Polish, so talking to a foreigner in a stressful situation would make me even more nervous and therefore the way I pronounce words would become less precise and more rough.

The reasons Arlena speaks of I find less cultural but much much more of learning methods. I have experience first hand as a kid studying English since the age of 5, then moving abroad to an English speaking school, only to find out I have little practical knowledge of the language in conversation. I have however also experience as a Callan method English teacher, years in, and by studying with this method, I recall no issues among the students that Arlena mentioned here and I have experienced myself after coming from the "standard" teaching method. Within a month I recall students not only capable of holding a basic conversation, but also willing to converse deeper and engage into topics despite making mistakes.

Witam! Zaliczam sie do garstki Kubanczykow mowiacych po polsku bez polskich korzeni. Dumny jestem, ze ponad 40 lat temu podjalem te nauke. Bylem w Polsce 2,5 roku (1979-1982). Udalo mi sie zachowac jezyk. Mimo, ze nie mam problemu w porozumieniu sie z Polakami, jezyk polski jest mi nadal bardzo trudny. Mieszkam w Hawanie, na Kubie. Pozdrawiam serdecznie. Walter

I'm Moroccan and it's been so hard for me to learn Polish because of it's crazy grammar despite the fact that I've been living in Poland for almost 5 years now. I took an intensive course to learn the language, but it was a total waste of both time and money. I just wish there was an easy way to learn it.

I think Polish is difficult also because Polish people speaks very fast. I'm Polish and I have realized that when I start learning other language.

Polish in fact is as difficult as any other Slavic language, and by the way it could be easier for foreigner to learn Polish due to its Latin alphabet in contrast to Cyrillic in Ukrainian for example.
