Some “practical” applications for the 7 segment display
•••
Maybe it’s a dice that can be used while playing table top games. Or connect it to the internet and use it as a counter for your online store or social media following. Or of course, you put 4 of them together with the colon separator, add a real time clock module, and you have yourself a fully functioning clock. If you want to get really crazy, add a couple more modules, and you can actually track seconds as well.

All the files for this project (including some sample code to get you started with Arduino) are available on my website, or free for my Thangs members. Link is in bio.

I just use something like Astro A50 wireless headphones that are on my head all day while home. Music, youtube, audio book, podcast, all day and their lightweight. You could also add speakers around the house and just have ambient nature noise playing, I do that for night time or listen to liquid DNB as I sleep. The humming is deafening.

As someone who also hears ringing all day and night but doesn’t know if it’s tinnitus or not I agree using a fan, playing music in the background, using earphones to sleep, or even hitting a dab are all good work arounds especially if your someone like me who’s calmed down by bass. I used to put my sound bar next to my bed and sleep with a heavy base 8h video for me to sleep to and I’ll wake up once it’s over. I don’t remember what I was originally gonna say because I went on a tangent but long story short I’m sorry you have that as well I hope you can get more used to it

I love the subway tiles and want to build a board out of them, however, I cant find any that are pre-build and I just add the electornics to automate it. And building the tiles looks like a major for each symbol... But mainly, I love the flapping noise of those. This one here, this gives me that same type of noise that I love and you have the files available now! I am watching your build video and buying the plans and printing a nhandful of these to build a mechanical clock! I can't wait to just hear the white noise of the shuffling.

actually singular "dice" is attested in many texts since the 14th century, and it's still commonly used today. i think it could even be better, since it avoids confusion with tools also called a "die", with plural "dies". and i suspect the common use in the singular is why you can dice food, like potatoes, but you can't "die" food.

Gives off split-flap feels and sounds. The only thing preventing wider usage for me is the thickness. I’m curious what possibilities there are if, instead of spreading each segment’s actuation out horizontally, if all of them could be combined into a single, rotating cylinder that still pushes the segments out and over.

this looks like it could be put in a puzzle horror movie. Especially with the shuffling noise, it's a bit off putting in a uncomfortable way, combine it with complete silence and you've got a great horror factor or whatever you call it.
